BMI is horse**** when it comes to accurately diagnosing health. I am technically overweight at 6' 2" but I have abs and can run 3 miles in 21.30.

You're thick-er though, it's all relative. 11.5 stone isn't light. (Not calling you fat at all btw)

I have a hunch that the truly superobese skew the average quite a bit. Think about it: one 400lb person and one 90lb person... Your average is now 245. You can be far more extremely obese than you can be underweight and survive. Thus, average is a poor representation of the actual population, far more of whom are likely clustered around a median weight that's only slightly higher than it used to be.

Idk if the study uses accurate terminology though. Maybe they said average but meant median. Idk.
CDC stats in the source use themean average.

You can tell if the data is skewed by the obese or very thin by looking at thestandard error of the mean. This is from the source (CDC):

(weight is in kilograms)
Think about it: one 400lb person and one 90lb person... Your average is now 245
In your sample (400 lb and 90 lb) the standard error of the mean is 155 (gigantic). Compare to the source data of which the standard error of the mean is 0.42

Right it's a guideline. I'd be interested to read the studies on healthy weight that BMI was derived from; I'm sure there a lot of slender asian/east african women that are "underweight" even though they are perfectly healthy.

5' 8" 120lbs is only moderately underweight, and 5'8" 160lbs is bordering on overweight.

False. BMI is a good metric for the vast majority of people, especially when combined with neck/waist measurements.

People who have more muscle mass than the average pleb are outliers and break the BMI model. Doesn't make BMI horsechit just because it doesnt apply to you specifically.

Wouldn't a body fat test be more accurate? (Prior to using BMI). At what body fat percentage should BMI be utilised/discarded?

Not true. One of my female friends has a daughter who is 5'8" and 100 lbs. She is in her early 20's and perfectly healthy.

no need to feel bad about it. being fat is a lifestyle; these people choose to stuff their faces and not be physically active. it's all their fault; they can live with the consequences since life is going to get harder for them as they get older.

i believe it. I dated an obese chick for a couple weeks before i realized i wasnt attracted to her (she took her shirt off and i was disgusted). Im a pretty fit guy, workout 4 days a week, run etc...I broke it off with her and a few weeks later she posts a snapchat story with her new guy, who also is fit looking, or atleast of normal, not fat, weight.

I dated her because that's all i could get, is an obese girl, but i realized im better off alone than wasting time and money on her

ITT men that can't really judge a woman's weight well.

And/or men that don't realize *maybe* these women stating they have a sub 18 BMI could be fudging the number.

This assumes that people are the same BMI throughout their lives, which isn't correct. There's a reason we speak of "the middle age spread." As people get older, years of being inactive and eating sht food and drinking booze gradually accumulate on them, with their lean mass fading away and their fat mass growing. So for example withstats from Australia, we see,

Basically 1/3 of people are overweight or obese in their 20s, and by their 50s-60s this rises to over 2/3. It drops off after that, but that's because the fatties die off earlier. But for the context of this thread, note that more men are overweight or obese than women. For all adults, it's 63% of men and 48% of women. Those stats are ten years old, so it'll be higher now. The point is: if we as guys are unhappy that so many women are fat, how do you think the women are feeling about us guys? If there are 10 men and 10 women, 6 of the men and 5 of the women will be fat, so 1 of those healthy bodyweight women will have to hook up with a fat guy.

Right. As we can see in this thread, men flip out when they hear a woman weighs more than 120lb, so women definitely have incentive to lie about their weights.

I'm on spread with you btw. So sad.
