I have a degree in theoretical physics from a Russell group university and was a straight A student in most other subjects in high school.

Peterson is one of the few people who I really struggle to comprehend. My ego wants me to believe that its him that is the problem, not me, hes just not a good communicator. However it is pretty clear that he is just much much cleverer than I am, his intellectual plane is just far beyond my own. I will be listening to him and the way he structures his thoughts is so precise its almost impenetrable for the listener but within those thoughts are some of the most brilliant observations of humanity and modern society Ive ever heard. He truly is one of the great thinkers of our time.

He is saying that our idea of God is an amalgamation, a composite of some of the ideals and values that people held in the highest regard in their respective societies. It's not a character, it's an archetype. Basically how the perfect man should live, merciful but stern when necessary, compassionate, generous etc. These are the traits, that if every man in the tribe has them, will make for a stable and prosperous society. God is how you want your neighbor to act, basically.

This is pretty hard to communicate explicitly, and it's an idea that has formed over a very long time. It's been passed down as stories from generation to generation, altered along the way to adjust for changing conditions in the world and new values of the people who tell them. The same thing has happened in most religions.

It's not about "your" God, it's about the ideals and values of a whole society/culture. Christianity has one set of ideals, Islam another etc. It's a way to shape society. Tell stories about how to behave, and you will burn these ideals into your people.

I don't know how much attention you've paid to Peterson but he's not religious in the same way that people showing up to church on a Sunday in South Carolina are religious.

He is more interested in the psychological and metaphorical (even Darwinistic) truth of the religious traditions. Do you know many Christians who place Buddha on the same pedestal as Jesus Christ or who talk openly about how the Biblical stories come from traditions thousands of years pre-dating Christianity?

It means your god is whatever you personally value the most. A good parallel to draw would be old school idol worship; the idols were not God with a capital G, but they were god to the people worshiping the idols.

I think if he used the word "Your" to start out that sentence it would have made a lot more sense.
