Misc convince me putting my dog to sleep is the right decision (SRS)
Our older pupper is EIGHTEEN and I think it's time to say goodbye but feel incredibly conflicted:
*I've never put a pet to sleep, and feel... guilt? about ending a life, especially one we love
*There's not one specific thing that turned for the worse, but he has just been sliding and sliding. I'd feel much better if something dramatic had changed in his health where it's like "Ok, it's time". Instead, it's like ok is 50% of what he used to be good? 30%? 20%?
*He can't control his bladder so he keeps peeing in the house, and part of me will be relieved when that's over, but that's a selfish reason to put him down.
Goddammit this fukking sucks.

Oh I am so sorry. Putting a beloved pet to sleep is one of the hardest things ever. Here's my philosophy. I would rather do it sooner than later so that they don't suffer. Since they can't talk and tell us they're in pain, it's a really hard decision to make. But quality of life over quantity is more important to me. He is one handsome pupper and 18 years is wow, really a long, long time to be loved in a great home! <3

Damn that really sucks. This is the ultimate down side to having a pet friend. One day it comes to this. No easy way around it. Srry brah. If you end up doing it now, the sad pain gets better day by day, week by week. I just had to bury my cat last month.

Know those feels, wifes 12 year old dog has cancer and enlarged heart so his time is ticking but hes chipper but he loses control of bladder and pisses all over our new expensive hardwood floors...
Not sure if I could ever put him down or if we did I couldn't be in same room

I've heard that pets feel deep shame every time they lose their bowel functions and soil their owners property. So stop considering that as a selfish factor.

I've been in your situation twice now op. It really sucks and you are going to get a ton of differing advice but only you will know when it's time. And when it's time you will know.

18 human years is a long time for a dog and is basically an OAP. Does your desire to keep him as a pet outweigh his potential suffering? Animals can tell when its time to go btw, they find a place to curl up and go to sleep.

If the quality of life has decreased then it may be time.
Don't want to pts too soon or too late.
People tend to hold on for selfish reasons rather than afford the animal the greatest gift you can give them.
If dog was lame or not easting/dropping weight it would be easier.
Dog probably had a good long life so just be there for him at the end, they rely on us as parents.

Bro I had a chocolate lab he was my family dog and we put him down last year, he could barely walk. His legs were all fked up I think its common with labs, but he also suffered from cancer. He had beaten it before but this time it was really bad. You can just tell when its time, he could barely move, eat etc. Its the right thing to do I think at this point its more selfish to keep him alive to spare your feelings.

Do some real soul searching. If you're gonno put him down just because he's pissing the house and is a generally a pain in the ass cause of old age, that's not a good enough reason in my book.
If his quality of life is really far below what it was 5 years ago it's time. Usually it's a combination of losing use of limbs, barely being able to eat, going deaf and blind. If he's to that point where he can barely walk, eat, see or hear... imo that is about time to do him a favor and end it gently.
Bottom line is you've known him for 18 fawkin years bro, you're the most qualified to make this judgement call. Just be honest with yourself and make the call, I know you'll make the right decision for him.

It sucks putting a pet to sleep but sometimes it's for the best. Ultimately, the decision is yours. If you don't then you'll surely come home to find him passed away in the near future which would also be tragic. Sorry for your future loss mayne.

Look at where you're keeping him and see what adjustments can be made to where he is when you're out at work.
If the only thing that's wrong is incontinence and if they are living a happy peaceful life you can't put them down.
If you put the dog down because it's hard to look after then your kids will learn that family love only goes so far and will think of taking the easy road in life, they won't learn about the power commitment and love if you do that.
All it comes down to is if he is suffering but you have to be HONEST in your heart with why you are doing this, if there's even 1% of you that feels it's for selfish reasons it's not right.
The misc won't give you the answer you have to be honest in your heart.
My morals are you do whatever it takes for your family and altruism is the only happiness in life. I know people with epileptic dogs who arrange their lives around them, they make a sacrifice based on their principles, make sure you are not taking the easy way out.

Sorry you're in this spot brother. Only thing I can come up with is that you'll know when it's time. All the pets I had to put down things went down hill real fast, and I knew it was for the best.
I'm starting to get to the place you are OP. One of my Mastiffs is going down hill, but very slowly. He'll have a few bad days, and I start to think this is it. But then like a boss, he's running around like a 2 yr old puppy showing off for me, and pestering his 4 yr old brother to play.
There ain't no easy way to go about it, and no one can answer that question but you.

Ugh. My wife had a cat that was probably already about 10 years old when we met. I wasn't really a huge fan of it.
But I ended up being the one that had to take it to the vet several years later to put it down. It absolutelycrushedme.
I dread the day that I have to make that trip with my dog. We've had her since she was about 8 weeks old, and she's now 10.

I've been "fortunate" that the three cats I've put to sleep showed drastic, dangerous, health conditions that made it an obvious choice. The cat I have now is in a slow decline due to a pulmonary condition that slowing robbing her ability to be active. She's still wonderfully affectionate, but I know this is starting to be the end. It will destroy me.
I feel for you bro, it's a devastating choice and I couldn't possibly convince you to do it or not. Remember the most important point, you don't want your friend to suffer needlessly, because of your love for him. If, in your judgement, there's still some happiness and quality of life, it's probably okay, but just keep track and do right by this wonderful creature that's given you years of fun and love.

Had to do this to a couple doggos, it is never easy. First time I saw one was when I was a kid, German Short Hair Pointer had cancer @ 4yo, couldn't afford to treat it and down she went to avoid further pain. Uncle's doggo was about 14yo, started dragging her back legs to the point of bleeding paws/claws, chit and pissed herself uncontrollably towards the end, she was alive but just wasn't "living" anymore.
Most times we put one down, grieved for a month or two, and started looking at other rescue/foster pups. Figured it would be good to save another dog from getting put down by adopting it.
Decision is up to you bro, best to you.
