The only way they'd be able to see any of that money is if they sue McDonald's directly. The store is liable for it's workers, so suing them directly yields better results than them going after the guy assuming he has that much money. A smart lawyer would know this.

That being said, whatever was awarded to them against the guy will never come to fruition. Even if you garnished his wages, you're only seeing dollars at a time. Those damages were for show.
