Civil unrest, apocalypse, life-changing events question.

If right now, all of you water taps stopped working, the electricity went off (and stayed off), natural gas stopped working, and police/law enforcement ceased to be effective at controlling the population, could you survive for 6 months?

Assume no gasoline because the pumps at the stations are dead from lack of electricity and will soon be looted anyway. Stores only have enough food until the looters are done with them in the next 24-48 hours. You don't know what has caused all of it or how long it will last.

Can you survive right now with what you have and know? Can you survive where you are? If not, what would you do? Where would you go? Really think about it... what if this were to happen today, maybe within a minute of you reading this, would you be fuarked? Or would you find a way to make it? How??

I'd be fuarked. I can survive a week maybe. After that, I have no idea what I'd do for clean drinking water. Maybe I could rig up a still-like system and boil some stream water using a wood fire.

I think everything would be civil and neighbor would help neighbor, until about the 1 week mark, at which point people will start to worry that things aren't going to go back to normal and that they themselves might not make it. That's when you stop giving away water to your friends/acquaintances who ask for it. You start carrying a gun at all times. You start watching people suspiciously. Around the 1 week point is when I think violence begins. Small groups will want to take what others have. I'd probably die in a gunfight at this point.

I might head for federal state park lands before this point. Driving until I run out of gas, then on foot.

I have about 6 months worth of MREs in a crawl space in my home srs. A famine doesn't seem likely, but you never know and they are easy to take hiking or whatever. I get water from a well so that isn't too hard. Assuming it didn't work for some reason I have a couple of water filtering options from hiking. 1 of which is good for like 10,000 gallons in it's lifetime.

First thing I'd do is empty my hot water heater into jugs as a source of fresh drinking water. That actually would last longer than a week. By the time I realized I needed to get food, the stores would already be looted. I have food to last a couple of weeks in the pantry though and you can survive 3 weeks without food, so I'm probably good for 6 weeks on food. I can protect myself. I'd stick around for a couple of weeks to see what's going on, then I'd load up the Jeep and head out for the closest national forest (to the west). I actually think that's where my problems would start. Not a hunter and not sure I could bring myself to hunt and eat small game. I don't know anything about prepping game for cooking or even cooking over a campfire.

I seriously doubt it.

Lasting that long in such a situation would require the desire to carry on living in said situation. I'd probably off myself pretty quickly.

I think we need to give ourselves some credit here. There are currently over a billion people worldwide without access to electricity. 663 million lack access to clean water and 2.4 billion don't have access to sanitation facilities. It would be a shock for us, but considering the infrastructure and all the crap we have accumulated in our lives, I think we'd manage pretty well for quite a while

Step 1 would be connecting with family and friends to pool resources. Drain water tanks, ice makers, etc for drinking water. Food in freezers and such would sustain us for a while. In the mean time I'd be procuring new sources of water (digging wells?), food, and other resources

Without neighbouring cities, foreign countries sending aid, it would be game over in the big cities. Too many people living there to be sustained without technology.
People in less densely populated areas could be fine and be sustained by their environment.
If refugees from urban areas come in it would end up up badly there as well in a industrialized country.

I have at least a years worth of shelf stable food powder. Guns for protection but I'd be screwed on water... best bet would be to pack the food and travel to the lake and camp for 6 months. Lots of other people would be doing the same though so that would be a challenge.

Yeah the only issue in a situation like op described is other people. They say the most dangerous animal you can come across while alone in the forest is a human. I've been out in the middle of nowhere and have ran across a few people and they were all sketchy as fuk. Once I unknowingly came too close to an illegal plant grow operation and I got chased off, came across a satanic ritual, came across a guy that was squatting on federal land in a wood cabin/shack etc. another human is the only real danger in a shtf situation.

Most modern humans would panic and probably find a way to die in a few days if they were dropped off in a remote locations. That's how reliant we are on the achievements of others. Basics such as finding water, starting a fire, hunting, constructing a stable shelter etc are skills anyone should know regardless if they are never used. Social media addicts would probably die sooner not being able to vlog and selfie their plight.

holy crap @ demonic ritual, lol.

I've found an ampitheater in the forests west of lake tahoe but nobody was there. It was a giant boulder with logs arranged like benches in front.

Luckily illegal growers catch you early and give you a warning. Kinda stupid that you have to worry about a criminal syndicate while trying to enjoy nature. You don't wanna be anywhere near those chemicals they use anyways tho.

Yeah, people really should make an effort to learn how to find/filter/sterilize water and also how to make fire, just in case they ever need those skills. Obtaining clean drinking water is probably what will kill most people. You can only go 3 days without water and desperate people will drink dirty, diseased water when they get desperate. They will die painfully as a result.

got camping stove, lots of fuel, food, heat blankets, water purification tablets, crossbow, recurve bows, knives etc

Would barricade and fortify home, would do some raids on locals (UK has no weapons) and get more supplies etc. I'd only raid and loot local tradie homes tho.

Could my family survive?

My dad has a gun. We have a Walmart within 3 miles. Jewel Osco is literally a 10 minute walk. And then Aldi's is about 4 miles. We also have a big number of restaurants + CVS + Walgreens

Would we be able to get food and water pretty quickly? I'd say so seeing as Jewel Osco is right around the corner. Walmart is a possibility, but we'd only get ammunition + crossbow from there. If there's no food then there's plenty of restaurants. If food isn't available we actually have a little wildlife here, actually gotta watch out for dear in some parts. Though I've never been hunting. I also think I'm located by a couple of fishing spots.

We got 3 cars and all of em are atleast half full + no need to go far, so getting supplies in a hurry is no problem
