Yes. Neighborhood residents send chit like that to me all the time.

I don't have a problem with the phrase itself, but I see it misused very often.

Please advise is just the white collar way of saying please respond.
Death is impossible for us to fathom: it is so immense, so frightening, that we will do almost anything to avoid thinking about it. Society is organized to make death invisible, to keep it several steps removed. That distance may seem necessary for our comfort, but it comes with a terrible price: the illusion of limitless time, and a consequent lack of seriousness about daily life. We are running away from the one reality that faces us all.

I work in the medical field , so we use the phrase frequently. However we are sincerely looking for advice from a physician etc.

What grinds my gears is the simple grammatical error "please advice" that we see ...

I say it in so many emails... I don’t want to but I do.

Edit- I also hate when I say “I hope this email reaches you well”

I basically become some person that I don’t even know when I need to be professional.

Lmao- I once had to compose an email to another project manager that was working for our client so I found a dictionary on the internet for project management jargon.. I used every big word I could find and sent it. I felt like a troll irl but it worked for what I wanted to happen.

There were times where this was actually appropriate. If you have no expertise in something and shouldn’t be making the decision, it’s appropriate. However, most of the time, if this were applicable, the issue would not come to you in the first place.

The majority of the times I’ve seen this used is when people want to shift responsibilities. They don’t want to be the one that said “we should do this” and have it not work. So they defer to someone else so they’re not liable for the outcomes. Not sure how some of these people get to their positions if they’re that scared of making a decision and the lack of confidence in their own abilities this fear demonstrates.
They said she's gone too far this time

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I use it in a mocking way all the time when someone has fuked something up.

Hello Mr. Sales Rep,

On Tuesday we placed an order with your company for expedited delivery. Per our conversation we were to expect these items by the end of the week. We scheduled staff to be at the office on Friday to receive the items, and they never arrived. The CEO of our company (copied on this email) is asking me to explain why it is now tuesday of the following week and we have still not received the delivery, I am not sure what to tell him as I expected delivery last week.

Please advise.

I write this in my emails all the time. Why do you hate it Opie?

Would you rather me say "You're frackin' doing your job wrong, so I'm asking you WTF were you thinking when you did this. Please give me your reasoning so I can understand your convoluted train of thought."

It sounds lazy and impersonal. It's not that hard to type like a non-robot: "Is this a known-problem?" or "Is there a fix expected?" or "Any clue what's going on?" Anything other than "Please advise."
Like 70% of my email threads literally have a back and forth of long emails that eventually end up with “please advise” it’s an epidemic.

Only managers and directors are allowed to ask things directly like that without making the other person feel like they haven't done their job.

If a peer asks, there's almost always resentment.

Also, I only use that when it's a cross-departmental interaction with a work group thatrequiresyou to be impersonal and professional. For people on my team, my IMs and emails are usually like "Um, hello, wtfrack is this homie?!" Because I know they're not going to be offended or pissy about it.

nn586,

While I understand your frustration with the recent terminology in my subordinates signature. I've advised them to refrain from this phrase going forward.
