not one state had a rate BELOW 22%.

What do you make of this statistic? Who holds the blame, and where does the cure lie?

The blame goes primarily to the gov't srs. The health and nutrition information they were putting out in the 80's & 90's was absolute garbage, created the "low-fat" wave that pumped everything full of simple carbs and caused an entire generation to become generally resistant to insulin.

I don't think there's 1 thing to blame. A mix of poor health education, dwindling physical activity, and ready access to nutritionally poor but calorie rich foods. USA also doesn't seem to have a minor stigma towards indulging in fast foods like other nations do.

To the last point - drive thru's were bad enough, now we can sit on the couch and have 3,500 calories of burgers, pizzas, wings and shakes delivered to our door.

I think it's a culture thing. High food availability, high stress environment, little emphasis on exercise, sedentary lifestyles, etc.

I don't think people intentionally get fat, and I don't think most people are inherently lazy. I just think that in today's culture/lifestyle in the US you HAVE to be outside the norm, track your calories, go to the gym, etc. in order to not be obese. Most people aren't going to do that, because that's why it's the norm.

I read the book "Get Up" by James Levine, director of the Mayo Clinic center for obesity research, and he points the finger at sedentary lifestyle.

Non exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) makes a bigger difference in your waist than exercise thermogenesis (EAT).

If you hit the gym 3-4x a week but are a lazy fuk otherwise, you're still likely to gain weight over the years.

It's a 7% change in the minimum reported by a state, not 7% total

Total obesity in adults rose by 9% from 2000-2016 in the US for example

exactly. a tradie that hits the gym, maybe like to bike to work, walk his dog at night, has project in the garage etc....basically just MOVES AROUND a majority of his day, will not be obese assuming he is cramming MCdonalds in his face 3 times a day.

It's a spectrum of many things, but laziness is taking over the culture

Greasy American food and bigger portions

Everything is bigger here, a medium soda in the movie theater is the same as large in other countries, like mcdonalds had to remove Supersize fries from the menu

Calories in vs calories out, right? Big portions, high calorie foods, lifestyle that is inactive.

Your average office worker isn't burning that many calories throughout the day, yet they'll come home to chicken alfredo pasta, garlic bread, and a sweet dessert. Their hobbies aren't outdoor related anymore - for guys, not many take up things like wood working or car building and repair anymore, and I'm even seeing a big drop off in popularity for hunting and fishing - but rather video games and catching up on Netflix shows.

The thing that pisses me off is that these parents are raising kids who are growing up overweight, adding to the obesity problem by creating an entire generation that is going to grow up thinking that fat is normal. Fuking disgusts me to no end to see a 10 year old who is bordering on obesity because their fat fuk parents don't care. It's already slowly becoming the norm to be fat and overweight. Everyone knows it's unhealthy. No one does anything about it.

Blame the demonizing of fats by "studies" paid off by the corn and sugar peddlers, hiding the impact of sucrose/sugar on obesity and diabetes (as well as overall health).

Sugars, HFCS, the Government subsidizing trash foods (corn), the assbackwards food pyramid, demonizing fats, all these efforts by the Government to make people healthy did the exact opposite at every turn. People eat complete trash processed crap now, it's what most people eat entirely.

Go shopping, don't be a creeper (or much of one), but just look at people's shopping carts (God help you if you try this at Walmart). You can tell instantly why people are obese right then and there.

Entirely bullchit. People aren't eating more and moving less now when compared to 1950 or the 1990s. Fuk off with that, no offense. The pushed their food pyramid, they subsidized corn so now high fructose corn syrup is everywhere, they told us fats were causing heart attacks, they told us to eat majority breads and carbs -- and we got fat. We move now more than we did in the 1990s and people aren't simply eating more with bigger portions. What changes was WHAT we are now eating.
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

Too bad an entire generation is now chronically insulin resistant, and still knows basically nothing about simple nutrition. It will take an entire generation to fix, if it gets fixed at all.
