Skip to 5:40...so much for that, we'll never know
Perhapsthebiggest fukk-up with the White Walkers isseriouslygoing with the trite, droid control ship bollocks where destroying one destroys all they turned, as we're left with even that final White Walker baby being destroyed, thereby leaving no way for future White Walkers. It's simply asinine for a multitude of reasons, but let's just settle with one being that if this were the case, the White Walkers clearlyknowthis weakness, while also being aware of the humans' own knowledge of their weakness to dragonglass and Valyrian steel. So why in the seven hells would the Night Kingevershow his assanywhereat all?
It makes the constant warnings given to Daenerys about being careful flying around in nothing more than Essos chic dresses when a single arrow could lay her out seem tame in comparison. The Night King should have kept his frozen arse up by the Northern Lights where he andsomehowhis entire race would be safe.
And that'sanotherproblem: Do you mean to tell me that the Children of the Forest's secret weapon against man wasone guythey turned, and that's it? They just converted the Night King, let him loose to convert other humans into White Walkers while raising the dead, butsomehowthe Children couldn't just gank his lonesome ass to chain-kill their problem? I don't buy that they madeoneWhite Walker - sorry, that's fukking retarded, and I think that the cave painting from Season 7 pokes some holes in this very daft conceit:

Again, clearlythe leftmost White Walker is supposed to be the "King" with the crown-like details on his head... except he has abeard. Can White Walkersshavenow? Or were there more original White Walkers with pointy heads, with the bearded ones we happen to see being humans converted by these originals? Is there some White Walker High Lord who has a spiky head and a great big, bushy beard still lurking in the Northern wastes? Or did the Night King begin to value a nice, clean shave at some point through his thousands of years of existence?
As much explaining is necessary, I'm almost more interested in seeing how the prequel will try to make the White Walkers still worth exploring, and I say that as a huge fan of their original role in the show.
'Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world's descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.'
'From the horrifying secrets of Westeros's history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend, only one thing is for sure: It's not the story we think we know.'
If executed well, thiscouldalmost be like GOT if its showrunners weren't so seemingly put off by exploring the magical aspects. Hell, maybe it will reveal enough to discredit the presumed ending we got for the main series, leaving it far more open ended and lacking of satisfying conclusions to draw. For instance, noyou don't just stab death, you silly bint, and it keeps coming back like Berric said.
Orit will perpetuate what the main series devolved into regarding its greatest threat and mystery:

Spoiler!

In all seriousness, GRRM's depiction of Daenerys could still leave the name with more tragic connotations, like a more violent version of Juliet/Julie/Julia/ect.
Meanwhile, D&D have certainly made it more like Surprise Hitler. ButKhaleesi? Those ignorant twats had that coming to them, although that's more like Surprise Fem-Ghengis Khan, with less rape and a lot more emphasis on genocide.

The thing about killing the NK and the rest will fall was kind of lame, but I don't see how else they could've done it. D&D pretty much wrote themselves into a hole with the Night King and the White Walkers. They made too many of them, as we saw at the end of S7E7. There's no way humans could have killed over 10,000 Wights or whatever the number was that included giants and a dragon. D&D just wrote themselves an easy out.

but a big part was not enough time. the episode should have been 2 hours long.
they could have held longer with proper strategy. trebutchets behind the trench lines, unsullied also behind the trench lines, unsullied ready to light the trenches, walls already manned. dany and jon with their dragons parked at winterfell. etc.
not having the khalasar mounted... it wouldn't have worked because undead can't be killed by being trampled. unless obsidian spikes on the horses or something.
ideally. i would of defended winterfell like that.
-trebs behind trench line
-unsullied ready to light trenches
-unsullied form ranks behind trenches, with bow and arrows ready
-khalasar with bows on the walls (they seem like master archers), have a few khalasar guarding the gates
-greyjoys defending bran was good. theon was the only one who was thinking properly lmao
-have some valemen guarding bran
-sansa should of had some guards with her at all times
-jon should have been stationed near bran at all times
-dany in the front with drogon
they would have survived for at least a day like that
There is only one Hell: the one we live in now.

The latter alone was trading narrative and thematic continuity for "subversion" while simultaneously opting for one of the most cliched, comic book-level "twists" that should have been given an official blacklist in any Hollywood production for being so damn overused. The thing about killing the NK and the rest will fall was kind of lame, but I don't see how else they could've done it. Anyway, along with 2RDEYE's point on them fast-tracking too many key storylines that required multiple seasons by cramming them into individualepisodes, as well as his suggestions on making a proper defensive effort during the episode, additional possible ways to overcome the enormous odds are to:
(1) Assuming we have to keep their silly chain reaction rules, actually bring the White Walkers into the battle, firing those Valyrian Checkov's guns, and wiping out chunks of the army of the dead. The wights are supposedlyextremelysusceptible to fire, so that fire wall could have kept them at bay, forcing the White Walkers to pull their snuff-out trick like they have shown before.
(2) Either keeping the above rule or not, Winterfell simply should not have been a one night standoff that was so easily won. This logical assumption on the part of viewers is partially why the theory of the Night King distracting the living at Winterfell to take King's Landing was so compelling. Even if that were not the case, and perhaps for the better, the other logical thinking would be that the living would have to fall back from Winterfell to King's Landing.
Not only would this have createdsomuch more intense drama as Jon, Dany,Jaime, and everyone else beg for refuge in King's Landing, but we would see Cersei being punished for ignoring the greater threat while preparing to betray those who now could be the last defense between her, her lover, and her future child.
The women, children, et al in the crypts:
Either they should have beenevacuatedfrom Winterfell to Moat Callin, then further south, accompanied by soldiers (now we don't have to wipe out everyoneduringthe battle, just to cut to losing only "half" and respawning troops out of nowhere), or the crypts should have been a red herring. Maybe the dead wake within the coffins, but they can't break through, and amidst the panic, the living use the crypts' secret passages to escape Winterfell, something we know for a fact is built into the castle for lords to use in the case of emergencies.
Once the helpless are evacuated, the rest of the living could have used the crypts as their final point to retreat should they be overrun.
An escape plan would have made sense because Winterfell is not a Helm's Deep; it's not a last effort castle tucked into a mountain, but a traditional one that can still be surrounded. However the battle goes keeping the Dothraki in reserve to flank the undead during the battle or those pursuing a retreat might not have been as dramatic than leading the battle with the flaming arakhs scene, but it would have made sense.
Honestly, there seems like a thousand plus ways they could have gone about the episode that would have been better, with or without their terrible writing decisions in so far as what kills the White Walkers. But to that point, I keep going back to Berric's quote:
"Death is the enemy. The first enemy, and the last. The enemy always wins."
Bran has said others have tried to defeat the White Walkers and failed, and I don't see why this situation had to be any different (especially with all of the emphasis on "subversion"). Not even necessarily a clear cut defeat, but something ambiguous would have been far more compelling than a resolution straight out of a comic book direct to Netflix movie.
*On a related note, this:

This is the look of someone predicting a future psychopath, not the savior of mankind:

I will stand firm, I refuse to kneel - The fury in me is divine
My dark grave awaits, my fate is revealed - But I'm not afraid to die

OR, they realise Winterfell is a horrible place for an actual fight and they escape and try to find sanctuary
OR make it so they kill the NK, defeat many of the WW generals but still came to a stalemate where the walkers leave and heroes have to decide if to follow and wipe them out or stay with the threat ever looming
OR they discover that the NK wanted just Bran so Jon loses all his honor and murders his brother for the sake of mankind. The NK is satisfied and leaves and again, our heroes must decide what to do in the future
OR they fight at Winterfell, lose, fall back to Cersei and either they defeat her or she captures them and takes their people as her own but chit hits the fan when the Walkers arrive so she has to work something out with Jon and crew
OR they fight at Winterfell, and finally manage to pull out a victory. Massive losses, but woops, where's the NK? End of the episode cuts to shadow of Viserion flying over KL. Aww chit it's just getting stared buddy
OR they kill the NK through some massive sacrifice but his generals stay alive and the fight goes on. Jon learns that the generals are performing a ritual to resurrect him and he has to defeat Cersei and use her army OR somehow get her help to create a diversion while he and a few good men impregnate the bitch and stop the ritual before it's completed. Jon loses his life in the process.
Just made those up while writing and all of them seem much better than what we actually got. There's a thousand other ways they could have gone.

Pretty long video with Mauler (podcast), but around2 hours, 50 minutes, 30ish seconds, he brings up a bloody incredible point about Arya's already insultingly moronic arc, and erasing theonehalfway decent part of it for me:

Previously on Arya Shiro Okami Kabocha Mashin Kara Kami

Arya kills way the fukk more people than The Hound.
Yeah... when you actually think about it,even ifyou delete her threatening to slit Yara's throat at a bloody peace conference... Arya is well past The Hound at this stage of psychosis. Hell, the Hound just moped around a bit foroneseason, and it was this short as hell one at that, which was literally a plot contrivance because he clearly didn't give much a damn about his brother. Meanwhile, Arya was saying the names of people she wanted to killout loud before bedtimeover and over again like some little Jack Torrence (by the way, how didno oneever give her a slap when they were trying to sleep?).
Seriously, the finale alone had 56 minutes ofno dialogue. The season opened with Tyrion making a cock joke. A ghostwriter for Twilight fan fiction could give D&D a run for their money.

It's seriously like random strangers on the internet can come up with a bunch of ideas and draw them at a hat or throw darts orwhatever, and the result would still invariably be an improvement over what we got.
GOT Season 8 could win best pornography, because it was certainly impressive from an artless, explosion-fest stretched out for far longer than it had any right to be given how little it actually accomplished.
TheAhuge problem with Season 8 is that it retroactively reduces everything before it into a complete, fukking waste of time, while especially making sure to dismantle every bit of build up specifically made for this season.
In hindsight, why did we spend seven seasons obsessing over the legendary Winter when it ends in one night because all it took was a Leeroy Jenkins jump atone blokewho had a vendetta against a tree?
Why did we waste so much time having everyone tell Danynotto just fly over and take King's Landing when it apparently only took one dragon instead of the three, and she could have probably done so with a fraction of the fraction of an army she had left?
GOT Season 8 is the textbook definition of bathos: It is an anticlimax to the nth degree, deconstructing the entire series in six meager episodes.

I don't think that a subreddit or random internet forums are eligible for Emmys...
Seriously, the finale alone had 56 minutes ofno dialogue. The season opened with Tyrion making a cock joke. A ghostwriter for Twilight fan fiction could give D&D a run for their money.
And congratulations on your Emmy for best writing.

First of all, Cersei would be HORRIBLY unprepared. As we later saw, Cersei with her full force AND the Golden company AND her newly equipped scorpions got wiped out easily by Dany and one dragon. Surely a stripped down, unprepared Cersei vs 3 Dany with her entire force intact and 3 freaking dragons would have been a complete landslide and Cersei would surrender so fast.
And there you have it, BOOM.
Dany gets the throne easily, everyone fears and admires her, no civilians die because Cersei would have just given up. 3 Dragons still intact, Dany would be of sound mind because no Tyrion to keep fukking with her. They wouldn't have to stupidly go on a mission to capture a wight just to show Cersei (THANKS AGAIN TYRION) and even the NK wouldn't have had a quick means of passing the magic infused wall because he wouldn't have a dragon to deus ex the whole thing. And even when he finally is able to pass, Bran would be at full power and working with Dany to secure a massive lead.
Tyrion is literally the reason everything went to chit lol, a severely reduced Dany was able to capture the city with no civilian casualties up until the ringing of the surrender bell. What was Tyrion even freaking out about in the beginning? This show is so stupid.

Good news to all fans of Miguel Sapochnik's work on GOT:
Re: The Long Night: ."I wanted to kill everyone."
He also says he argued with Benioff and Weiss over the battle’s dearth of impactful deaths. “I wanted to kill everyone,” he says in news that really makes us wish he were running the show. “I wanted to kill Jorah in the horse charge at the beginning. I wanted it to be ruthless, But David and Dan didn’t want to. There was a lot of back and forth on that.” Sapochnick says he eventually relented because “there comes a point when they dig in and you just don’t want to be there.”
And the only reason any ofthathappened was because the incompetent writers handed Tyrion the idiot ball (maybe one too many fade-to-black blows to the head?), reducing his wisdom and valuable consul to a string of exponentially worsening advice.
What is particularly inane is how everyone was telling Dany to justsiegethe city, but not in a high octane "The Bells" assault, but apropersiege like Riverrun: "Don'tattackthe city, merely starve out the people!" I meanreally?!?

Now that we have hindsight to see apparently the only alternative of Mad Dany going hard ass motherfukker on King's Landing, would it havereallybeen that gratuitous to simply fly over to the Red Keep with three dragons and oust Cersei?
Honestly? You almost can't blame Dany for losing it.
What was supposed to be a tragic downfall was a sloppy, forced personality shift because the showrunners (1) couldn't justtellEmilia Clarke up front where her character was heading so that she could understand what her notes actuallymeant, and (2) were too caught up capitalizing on "YASSS KWEEEEN" fandom up until they ran out of time to even remotely build up any hint of madness in Dany.
As much as the writing devolved post GRRM's material, the idiocy compounded because Double Dickless wanted to rush the entire show so thattheycould move on to Confederacy, then Star Wars.

That interview with Miguel Sapochnik was interesting but not surprising. It's ridiculous that they didn't give him more creative control, the guy was responsible for some of the best episodes of the series. As far as killing Jorah in that Dothraki charge, I think that would have been a lame way to kill him off. He's a pretty major character and I actually liked how he died in Dany's arms after all they had been through.
That whole Battle of Winterfell should have been reworked to actually make tactical sense. I think Brienne, Tormund and Grey Worm should've died immediately when the fighting started. That would've been a serious holy chit moment

So D&D pulled out of public appearance at an upcoming Comic-con

Won't they have to attend the Disney Star Wars Q/A? Can't imagine it going well for them.

they deserve a chance at star wars. who else would do it. there are literally no other good showrunners, unless you get like one of the big names like christopher nolan's brother jonathan nolan. d&d literally only ****ed 1 season hard and a couple character arcs. but the rest was damn good
