I put pea gravel all over my back yard in CA, and bark on the front. Cheap AF and the dogs couldn't destroy it
catbrah's yard looks like something out of a condemned trap house but it's still a good idea if you can do it properly. Sadly we have an HOA here that demands grass

I don't think our yard looks THAT bad. I actually picked a lot of trash out of it. Someone had buried a full stop sign and a bunch of legos thst we kept stepping on.

I agree with you that grass is a pita. But on the other hand i get at least 3 hours of cardio a week pushing my poverty mower back and fourth across my poverty 1/2 acre yard. Double edge sword. Lol
Its plenty enough yard for my son to go batschyt crazy running all over like a possessed squirrel on pwo so its worth it.
No need to water it because it rains here unlike ****afornia.

I paid just over $7.8k and had my entire front yard done like 8 months ago at my house, not it's super nice gravel, aesthetic plants and a mesquite tree, lemon tree etc. and namely; a fat like 600sqft? 800sqft? forgot what we decided on. but a big astroturf (fake grass but looks clean and real, high quality not that neon green chit LMAO) patch with red brick bordering separating it from the aesthetic gravel i picked out and they put like a dirt mound below part of it so it's not just all flat, it's cool has some curves/looks really nice from the street since it's different elevation
but all the plants are set up on irrigation, + fake grass/astroturf, + gravel = much less water bill (was ALL real grass before, watered twice a day every day), and most importantly sine i like to travel: it's 100% automated lmao. just have the landscapers come once every 2-3 months to trim the shrubs and trees etc in the front and back thats it it's LIT

I haven't had to water my lawn yet this summer due to the amount of rainfall.
I cut it myself. Takes around 25 minutes.
No yard catches on fire around here... although my grass is starting to look a little dryer now that it's July.
No allergies, so I enjoy my yard.
ETA: Took a pic of my yard so OP could see what I'm going on about.

Ive got 100 acres of grass. It supports a herd of cattle, and local wildlife populations. No water bill as I dont live in the desert, it is supported by rainfall. It also allows me to produce an income from my land through hay and cattle sales.
I love grass.

We use a water pump and just pump from the water table that isn't more than like 3 feet deep from the surface lol. Grass is thick AF. I get the reasoning in dry areas, so that's understandable. However, grass isn't evil everywhere. Just gotta keep the soil PH reasonable and you won't have to dump fertilizer on it.
