If the perps started fire, I agree with you that the cops had little choice but to return fire. You can't just let someone sit in a UPS Truck and start unloading rounds. Could have easily resulted in more deaths.

Did the police know they had the hostage in the truck while the chase was going on?

So if some guy has a few too many drinks they will follow them with a helicopter but if its a hostage situation they go grab a coffee at the helipad? That makes no sense at all. Hell they barely need to use the helicopter anyways since the UPS truck would have had a tracker on it. Somehow I doubt UPS would have said no to providing that data in the situation.
I understand that in a situation like this the cops have their adrenalin flowing and might not be thinking properly. Times like that its best to let them hold back a bit and regroup. Slows the thinking down so they can think clearly again.
I'm put in situations at work where things start going sideways pretty quickly and we are trained to stop what we are doing and regroup. Might not be bullets flying but the results can be the same if we make the wrong decision.

Sigh its like you guys have no reading comprehension. I never said they dont use helicopters for this situation. I said they dont use them for tracking and back off. Helicopters are used in nearly every situation. The topic was having the officers back off and allowing the helicopter to track. In a pursuit of a dui or a stolen vehicle they would track. In a hostage situation they would not track. A helicopter would still be used in both situations. You guys are not helping your arguments with idiotic posts like this

Background is important when considering to use deadly firce however when the suspects SHOT AT THE COPS, they became an imminent threat and cops were forced to engage. The SUSPECTS caused the civillians deaths, not the officers regardless of whose bullets caused their deaths. You simply want the cops to be at fault so you dont care the suspects caused it to happen by not simply giving up
Please name me a active school shooting that cops engaged and stopped in the school.

I'm not sure if that's been mentioned anywhere in the news yet. If the PD knew the guys had a hostage that will bring up a whole lot of questions and scrutiny IMO.

They did know, and have helicopter footage of him sitting on the floor between the suspects. They also have footage of the officers using civilian cars as rolling cover.

If they didn't know there was a hostage then I believe it should call into question why they didn't make an attempt to disable the truck earlier in the pursuit where the area wasn't filled with innocent bystanders.

dhawkeye has his opinion on this as a former cop, but I can guarantee you there's hundreds of other cops looking at this the same way we are saying "they fuked this pursuit up big time."

That definitely is a huge factor in all this then..... this seems like it was treated like a "chase" situation and not a hostage one.

I definitely agree. Having a bunch of cops, gun drawn, approaching a truck that is basically backed into a corner with criminals/hostage is going to look really bad.

You can support cops but at the same time criticize the actions of some. "Supporting cops" doesn't mean you have to totally turn a blind eye to instances that warrant criticism.

I'm pro cop as fuk but the reality is there's tons of cops who don't belong on the job for a variety of reasons. There's entire departments that have incompetent leadership, I'll continue supporting cops despite the idiots that fail at their jobs.
I promised myself I wouldn't post here again but 1 last one.

Dhawkeye and that other POS ******* bigduretard are nothing but scumbag boot licking chit tier human beings who have jumped into every thread where an LEO has done something bad/sketchy/murderous.

> They did the same for those cops who straight up murdered a guy crawling in a hallway and he begged the cops not to shoot him
> Same for that woman who was taken hostage on the street. Cops murdered her.

And now this, but holy chit have they gone even deeper into the boot licking territory. This is straight up worship by now but because these 2 clowns have some sort of LEO experience they think nobody else can comment.

Go. Fuk. Yourselves.

British and European police dont do this chit when confronted by armed assailants. hell look at that terrorist in London last week. In the US of A those civilians would have been swiss cheesed by your typical retard American cop.

But he was going to stab more people! Lets open fire in a crowded area!!

Retards.

They straight up murdered that UPS driver and did the same to the bystander.

"Oh but they could have jacked another car!!" Perfect! Lets shoot them then and fuk the consequences.

This is how I picture these 2 bootlicking *******s
//i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/191/039/e9f.jpg[/img]

You're scum. Oh and neg away because you're pathetic and cant do anything else other than worship low IQ, chit tier cops who wouldn;t even get a BB gun in any self respecting British or Euro police force.

*******s.

I agree they weren’t set up for this situation but it’s impossible to train for every situation and even when you do it never goes as planned. But prob training will change because of this just like it did after colombine massacre. At that time officers stood back and waited for swat buy after that all protocol changed with active shooter situations like above and now you go in a try and eliminate the threat as quick as possible.

I think it's actually pretty cut and dry. You simply should not actively engage fleeing felons if you have not cleared bystanders from line of fire first. If you cannot clear the bystanders, then you should not engage. Allow the felons to continue to flee until you're no longer in a position where you'd be forced to shoot through bystanders.

Someone might try to make the argument "but they were stuck in traffic," that may be so, but if you didn't get out of your vehicles with guns drawn the suspects may not have fired. Police CHOSE that scenario to engage, it was wrong.
