It's one of the first things you learn in swiftwater rescue. You'd be surprised how strong a 9 year old can be while drowning with adrenaline levels through the roof. You can take the biggest baddest guy you know, you start taking away their air supply and they will begin to panic. It's not that they do it on purpose, it's the body's natural response to do whatever it can to get air. That includes involuntary kicking and punching you and using you as a buoy if necessary.

How can they not have simply moved her to the shallow end, dragging if need be. not knowing how to swim in 2019 is insane. drowning in a pool a few inches above your head is also insane, you can literally spring board off the bottom and come up for air indefinitely.

sad story but there was a lot of low iq behavior it seems.

Definitely looked like an under current. Something to remember is that around bridges, dams, and structural points that man has built, there is often filtration systems underneath that are happy to suck you under. my ex housemate is 30ish lived on coastal cities in australia his whole life, upper middle class ... but indian and barely knows how to swim. "its not a thing in our culture, we just don't get taught how". ??? blew my mind.

Happened to me in the beach with a cousin maybe 20 years ago. The idiot doesn't know how to swim and got dragged by the current coming from the shore. I can see him struggling to stay in his place but he got dragged towards me on the deeper part. His instinct kicked in and he grab me by the head and try to push me down so he can stay afloat. Water is not so deep maybe 7 feet so when my feet touched the ground, I punched him as hard as I can on his stomach so he'll stop pushing me down. I was able to get away and drag him by his hair to the shallow part. Beat him to death when we got to the shore! We were laughing about it after that while drinking but that's the closest I got to dying afaik and this thread just reminded me of that.

Lol they were at a resort, could the mother not have ran for help why the incident took place.

It’s a known fact that homies are rarely good swimmers. Gotta be dumb af to let your kids swim / go on a poolside vacation when they clearly don’t know how to swim.

Water is fukd tho, I was swimming in ocean a bit ago like a kilometre out and had a weird panic moment and realized that if I stopped swimming I would die. Tripped out a bit and quickly cruised back to shore but felt my chest and body tightening during the experience

Location doesn’t mean chit, there are people living in poor countries who can swim just fine because they’ve grown up doing it. I tried learning as an adult but I’m too scared. Funnily enough I’ve been scuba diving and that was fine.

I nearly drowned at a swimming pool when I was 9. It was my school class & the crap lifeguard wasn't paying any attention to me floundering. I had waded out too deep & then started panicking as my head started going under, I calmed myself down & began taking baby steps back until I was in shallow enough water where I was safe.

Nothing public, but somebody there said she stood there praying for them to come back to life & touching their bodies the whole time CPR was being done on them & even after the paramedics had called it-apparently one of them who also has the religion bug was praying with her & said something about how reassuring they found praying together which is weird. Really you would think your bible bashing husband & kids drowning & your prayers not being answered would convince you there is jack all out there, but no doubt it will somehow be rationalised as being his will.

Sure there's also people born in poor countries who are billionaires. I'd wager it's much harder to find the time and place to learn to swim if you're a slave laborer in China or the middle east, for example.

If you want to pretend it's not easier to do nearly everything in a first world country that's fine. It's still wildly irresponsible to participate in watersports if you don't know how to swim.

This makes sense in an open body of water, not in a pool.

Not getting swimming lessons for yourself is one thing. Being too scared makes little to no sense, especially since you went scuba diving, which is swimming, just with equipment.... Not getting swimming lessons for your children is negligent especially when you bring them around a pool.

Like I said I did try learning, I sucked at it. I can’t swim freely. Also scuba diving was fine because I could BREATHE. Big difference.
