Money wont make you happy? Who even believes that? Its like saying food wont make you healthy, food is simply food. Money is a tool, how could a tool make you happy? A tool is for using, it does a job. A screwdriver wont make you happy, a hammer wont make you happy!

Happiness for adults , is a crowning glory, a responsibility, its built on a foundation. If you are genuinely,exuberantly happy, you will be hated by most people. In the future you will be happy because TV told you so and my neighbors have a newer car than me, and I want to have that car because I like how it looks and feels, and then people will see me in the car and I'll be seen as a success, even if I don't feel like one , at least I'll be able to wear the uniform. Long-term happiness peaks at around $70k in my area according to some research that was done. At that point, you're likely able to minimize any financial stresses and indulge a bit, and that's when happiness hits its apex. Everything above that is just gravy


But making more probably has a huge impact post-retirement since that could mean the difference between being able to enjoy your retirement vs being shuttled off to a retirement home to rot while your kids wait for their meager inheritance

The notion that money can't buy happiness is half true. Over-indulgence in materialism is definitetly overrated. That being said, being broke sucks. I've never been so dirt poor that I was living in a total dump while relying on government handouts and foodbanks (I'm not saying that to bad mouth people who have needed those services). However, I did spend some years living in crappy apartments while making crappy wages.

Ended up holding two part-time jobs with crap pay while working about 50 hours a week between them to make ends meet before I finally landed my first good full-time job. Then I upgraded from that as well. Now I'm at a point where I'm pretty comfortable. I would never want to go back to struggling again. I don't know how people can deal with making wages that are a few bucks north of minimum wage at best their entire lives. It sucks.

happiness shouldn't be the goal though. Drugs can make you happy, but that won't change your situation.

Also been on both sides, from not having much money to having more than enough money. It's definitely true that money alone will NOT make you happy, if you are poor in other areas of your life. I think of my happiness coming from a combination of different silos of my life/psyche - family, friends, love, health, purpose, accomplishments, outlook, etc., with one of them being money. These silos are all of different importance and contribute differently to an individual's happiness. As for money itself, it affords you more/better options, which gives you a sense of freedom of choice, which you make based on what makes you the happiest.

Once you break beyond 200k, the total comp goes up by quite a fair bit. However, you end up doing less meaningful work and more politics. I recommend for those who aren’t psychopaths, narcissists or manlets, to cap out at 100k.

For the vast majority of people, not having enough money is the biggest stressor in their life. What do you think their happiness level would be if they won a $300 mil lottery the next day? No change?

People that aren't accustomed to wealth imagine 1 million dollars to be a lot of money. Its not. Wealthier people might own 2-10 different homes valued at 10-50 million each in various areas of the country/world. You could own a private jet, which costs millions, and you have to pay ongoing maintenance/upkeep and the flight crews salaries so you can fly around at will.


Or maybe you want a mega-yacht that costs over 100 million dollars. Don't forget you'll have to hire a crew and staff it. Millions of dollars per year for that, etc. There are plenty of people who spend millions of dollars per year on just on-going expenses and bills. That's not even buying new 'toys' like cars/jets/homes/boats. Etc.




When people say "Money doesn't buy happiness" they have no grasp on what it would be like to have actual fukk you money. I've known a few very wealthy people. And they were all extremely happy, generous and satisfied with their life-style.
