That opening scene from 'Saving Private Ryan' blows my mind (Srs thread)

Imagine seeing the last group that went over all being mowed down by artillery and machine gun fire?
Imagine the smell off piss, sh*t and infected wounds? Imagine being a part of a strategy that was to keep throwing bodies until the enemy were overwhelmed and ran out of ammunition?
Imagine knowing you will never see the next hour?
Imagine you're doing this for someone crying about a movie not having enough diversity or their University degree costs too much, or that Corvid is a truly horrific world to be living in. lol.
Seriously, poor kids. Even those who knew what was up were forced to die. We couldn't even imagine that environment, we've never been in a more easy time in human history with technology and flexible laws.

Order 227 is true. The reason so many soviets died is commissar pencil pushers with 0 combat experience were the ones standing in safety, just out of reach, with his pistol drawn, ready to shoot anyone who fell back, even when completely logical to retreat.
Also, soviet generals and their families would literally get executed if they didn't make satisfactory progress, so they spent the lives of their troop like water. It didn't matter at what cost it took, as long as your families didn't die. They were not fighting a battle of tactics, but of pure desperation.
Also, any captured soldier would be branded a collaborator, and would be killed when re-captured, so they fought to die in any case.
Almost all experienced Russian offers died in the great purge, most of the new officers that replaced them were completely useless, and for the majority of them, the only tactic they knew was human wave.
A lot of it was a massive waste of lives, deaths from politicking.

soviet and nazi fighting on eastern front is exponentially worse than WWI though, which is exponentially worse than allied western front. 90% of nazis died in eastern front, and several times more soviets died in stalingrad than the allies throughout the entire war. Eastern front was where the nazis brought their scariest chit like tigers, king tigers, panthers, panzer iv, etc. Stalingrad is almost literally a winter hell on earth. Bands of nazi cannibals running around eating freshly dead bodies of their fellow soldiers. People literally dying on their feet from cold and malnutrition. The nazi army group doctor did autopsy on several of them and their heart was the size of a walnut. Nazis running around hacking off feet from half-dead fellows to steal their boots. Soviets building a tank, not even painting it, but sending it out from the factory door to the front line. soviet wave attacks dying by the thousands everyday. soviet troop being forced to swim across the volga river in sub zero temperature to reach the front lines. Hand to hand fighting using bayonets. Then you get Leningrad with soviet cannibals running around eating children. Children killing parents so they wouldn't need to share food. There was an account by a mother who hated her son, and wished him death because he was a mouth to feed. Living in the freezing cold with 3 dead bodies in your house. Normality to them was the ability to cry and feel sad. Chit was so fukked, all they felt was hunger and nothing else, not when their kids, their parents, their friends died.
Lots of situations, and wars, even today, infinitely more fukked than normandy beach landing. At least that was a victory invasion, the war against the nazis was pretty much won at that point, and the soviets were halfway to berlin weeks before the first boat landed.

It was a great move by america too, minimal casualties, maximum gains. It was the only country to exit WWII relatively unscathed, which is a big part of why its a superpower today.

You guys should read “D-Day Through German Eyes.” It’s only a couple bucks on amazon kindle and not a long read. I didn’t realize a few things until I read that book.
90% of the casualties on Omaha occurred during the first 20 minutes or so.
The Germans HATED that the British and Americans actually sided with the Russians and didn’t understand it for the life of them. It pissed them off to no end that they had to divert resources and men from the eastern front to defend Normandy against an enemy they really weren’t passionate about killing. They just had to deal with it.
There were thousands of Russian defectors who fought for the Germans in Normandy.
The Germans nearly all sh!t themselves when they saw thousands of ships coming towards them on D-Day. They said it was like an enormous wall of steel coming towards them and they all looked at each other like “Yep.....we’re all fukked.”
One German soldier couldn’t believe how physically large the Americans were. He said “I don’t know if they put all their tallest men in the front, but these guys were huge and with their scary looking Thompson sub machine guns, they were an intimidating presence, lol.”
Another German soldier ran out in the open to fetch a dead American’s Thompson because he knew from American films how powerful it was. They did the same thing with the Russian PPSH sub machine gun or “Papashaw” as they called it.
They said the French civilians were mostly on their side and a lot of Germans had kids with French sloots. Until the Allies landed and then they threw French pussy at the Americans like their lives depended on it, lol.
A lot of the German Wehrmacht despised the Waffen SS because they were given all the best equipment. They considered them a glorified unit and often times, they didn’t work well together.
Another German machine gunner mowed down so many Americans on D-Day he started to cry when there was a lull in the fighting. He couldn’t make sense of the Americans sending wave after wave of these young men into the lions den. MG42 crossfire meant certain death pretty much.
Hitler really blew it big time on D-Day. He had a known habit of staying up late at night and waking up late. Nobody had the balls to wake him up and when they did report to him that the invasion was happening, he played it off and kept insisting that Normandy was the diversion and that the real invasion was going to happen with Patton invading the Pas-De -Calais which was the shortest and most obvious invasion point for the Allies. It was the most heavily defended area and he didn’t give Rommel enough resources to defend Normandy. Hitler kept a sh!tload of his panzer divisions in reserve to deploy to whichever area the Allies attacked. And by the time he gave the order to send those divisions towards the beaches, it was too late and the Allies had already set up shop and dug their heels in.
The hedgerows in France were much taller than could be seen by allied Reconaissance planes which slowed us down big time. One German MG42 could hold back entire divisions and the tanks had a sh!t ton of trouble going through or around those hedgerows.

One of the interviewees says that in his town there were a couple of kids who committed suicide because they were declared "4-F", unfit for military service. Not fighting for your country in times of war was/is seen as a disgrace.Tbh OP, I think it was likely ignorance, alot of 18-22 year olds, likely didn't understand what they were really facing that day.
Another interesting POV is in the documentary 'They Shall Not Grow Old', which is about WWI. In it they use first hand accounts (interviews, diaries, etc.) and it is very apparent that the kids (15, 16 year olds in some cases) who signed up literally had no idea what they were getting themselves into. They had no idea how deadly new weapons like machine guns were or how brutal chemical weapons like mustard gas could be. Obviously WWI was in a different time but people then were much more blindly patriotic and believed in things like fighting for the empire without question. Another point that speaks to this is from the documentary 'The Vietnam War' by Ken Burns. In it, he interviews many vets and in one of the interviews that's included in the documentary, one of them says that Vietnam was a turning point because it was the last war/time period in which Americans had faith in their government and believed in supporting their country whether right or wrong. After all the evidence of the leaders having known the war was unwinnable came to light, it changed the way people looked at their government. I think people today are far more distrusting of governments, in large part because we have seen tons of evidence of how corrupt they are.

The entire reason hitler did that was eugenics and vanity. He believed that the slavic people were incompetent sub-human surrender monkeys, and didn't need as many soldiers to annihilate them. Also, he wanted to destroy stalin's name by capturing "his" city. In reality, russia pulled back quickly to stretch nazi supply lines, which is pretty much the only smart thing the soviets did in the entire war, but had the added advantage of making them look weak and chitty, when they were anything but.Interesting.

It wasn't completely gone, but the more hitler meddled, the more he lost, the angrier he got, and the more he meddled. He always believed germany lost WWI due to internal sabotage by the jews, gypsies, freemasons, or who whoever the fuk. German people in his mind were too superior to lose without internal sabotage. So in this case, when he lost, he blamed his generals. He actually started out with a very competent group, and it ended with him, a bunch of kissarses, and that fatarse hermann goring, who had the impossible idea of airdropping supplies to the surrounded 6th army in stalingrad, that caused them to be annihilated. he was so far gone that towards the end of the war, he forced trains to run extended schedules to concentration camps for genocide, rather than send material to the front where it was needed. It wasn't a war for him, it was a racial struggle. you can have all your racial fantasies or whatever, but you still need someone with a head screwed on to win the war for you. The fact that he was heavily on meth didn't help at all.
As for your question about the myth of 2 soviets to a gun:

Now you have people who don't give a crap about anything except themselves.

If you haven't seen the documentary WW2 in Color on Netflix you should. Goes through everything leading up to and the end of the war and has some amazing footage. The things that men did in the war are absolute mind boggling as well as the scale of it all. Truly makes you sit back and rethink how lucky we are those men/women sacrificed so much for everything we have now. This should be shown to kids in school so they realize this more.

Fast forward to 2020 where kneeling during the national anthem is considered the ultimate sacrifice in bravery.

Want to blow your mind some more.
Just about every island landing in the Pacific was a smaller scale Dday.
So there were guys that did that over and over.
War sucks. It still does.

Whats your thought process while you are on the boat just casually floating towards a bunch of people that want to kill you? Imagine being one of the guys in the front, just chiling there knowing you will be the first to die. Thats it, you get one chance at life and its over at 20 years old being shot in the head by some dude that you never even saw his face.
Kind of put things into perspective. Everyone mad today riotting and **** because of stupid reasons, people being *******s because they cant go to bars/clubs, etc.
