So was Rippetoes' SS a hoax?
I remember 10 years ago, starting strength was recommended to everybody. Squat heavy 3x a week, bench 2x a week, then either BB press or rows, each for 3 sets and 5 reps, and of course drink as much milk as you can. I think that was the whole routine and it was recommended to absolutely everyone who was starting bodybuilding.
I did it too, probably the worst routine I ever did and it did not do jack **** for me except for turn me into a dreamer bulker with hippo hips. 3 sets per body part, especially for something like legs, does not do ****. My squat went up a little bit but I also tweaked my back doing squats. Every other routine I tried worked better for me.
Looking back it was pretty pathetic that Rippetoe runs the typical "guru" bootcamp bull**** for insecure young men and no one called him out on it. Starting from saying doing squats raises your testosterone, drinking a gallon of milk will turn you into a man, bodybuilding and doing high reps will turn you into a woman, the whole thing was pretty cringe.
Now I see no one recommends this ****ty routine anymore. Did people finally figure out the whole thing was a scam to sell copies of Rippetoes' book?

I had good results with it as far as adding weight to the bar when I was 16 and was doing it in my garage.
The thing is you don't get the bodybuilder glory without the bodybuilding exercises and just doing the big 3-5 PL lifts.
Now that I am back into weight lifting I am using his books and videos to make sure I am doing the lifts correctly but I am doing a different program.
The gallon of milk I think did more harm then good in my case.

I’ve gained all my strength on a similar routine. If I wanted to cut I’d probably do something tailored to cutting and not gaining strength.

GOMAD is for skinny twinks who claim to not be able to gain weight, it's not part of the SS routine. I used his book to learn how to do the barbell lifts properly.

It's good when STARTING out, to learn the major compound lifts and quickly build a decent STRENGTH base.
But yes, the people who act like it's the most amazing thing since sliced bread and that you should run it for years are wrong.

No, it has it's place. But the dogmatic belief system, like SS is the ONLY routine in the world that works for ANY goal pushed by rippetoe and his followers was just stupid
You could probably do worse if you've never lifted before for your first 3-6 months or so.. it primes the CNS so builds some strength, builds good form habits and get's you familiar with the exercises that should be a base of most routines, but beyond that it has limited use.

Squats
Deadlifts
Military Press
Do each 2 x /week Start out 3 x 5 work up to 5 x 5 when you own 5 x 5 move up 10 lb.
Eat 150%. of your lb. weight in protein

I do it everytime i come back from hiatus
Which is often cuz im a coomer
-You gain strength really fast
Im usually back to my sig lifts in like 1 or 2 months
-you dont have to get fat. Just eat enough protein
-only need to go to gym 3times a week
-i add curls/ lateral raises
When you stall just get off the program asap

I've heard some people talk the most ridiculous stuff about the program, mainly from SS affiliates.

It wasn't until I got a garage gym (like age 32 or so) that I really did any barbell work. Book was invaluable for me.
I followed the other advice about diet too and fat fukked myself lol. But for starting out and wanting to start putting weight on the bar, and learn the movements, it's good to go.

I remember doing that **** back in the day, lol. Got fat, weak, and in chronic pain.
Lifts:
Squat: 460x1
Bench: 400x1
Deadlift: 575x1
OHP: 250x2
Weight: 180 lbs.

I changed the name to "Starting Plateau" shortly after I started it.
I got some newbie gains off it, both in strength and mass, and then it stopped. There wasn't enough reps and sets for me to gain strength to advance in weight.
When I ditched SS and started lifting at 3 to 5 sets of 12 reps and going to failure is when I started to gain.
For some reason, it's been the program started by guys looking for aesthetics too many times, when it was never tailored to bring aesthetics. I think this push came from the PUA community recommending it for skinny guys to in shape.
Seemed to be all they could talk about at the time (2004-2010) on forums and PUA material.

Was squatting, bench pressing, deadlifting, overhead pressing and power cleaning for 5 reps several times per week a hoax?
And I love it when people blame lifting weights for getting fat.
Even by Misc standards, this is unbearably illogical.
