925 Quarantined for Covid. Is This a Successful School Reopening?

A suburban Atlanta county opened its schools amid controversy and a growing case count, previewing a difficult national back-to-school season.

Also in CA, which is why this is so cot damn confusing. District is offering in-person instruction with a reopening plan unless you manually enroll in remote learning. Starting to wonder if they are just trying to appease parents who want in-person instruction with some PDF plan.

You can say they should still have the same education virtually but the reality is virtual learning is a joke.

Granted, you're all gonna get forced into virtual as soon as these schools start seeing cases and the knee jerk reactions that the sky is falling because there's been some positive tests occurring.
"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

Unfortunately this is going to inevitable. As soon as reports are out that some kids caught it, the school districts will lock right down again. I feel terrible for the young kids, this is going to be extremely hard on them.

Are we quantifying this stuff. Kids getting a cold or virus is normal. Anyone go to the ICU or hospital. I'm guessing not likely. So why the panic?

The media has made this out to be a death sentence when it affects people in the group of 85 plus. More media hysteria?

Agreed

It's sad but people literally cannot handle this right now. The mental fragility of this country is truly shocking. The second those cases start getting released a sh*t storm is gonna rain down from those terrified to step outside as if they've been hit with the f*cking plague.

I don't have kids but I work with middle, high school, and college students. They all want to go back and so many are depressed over this sh*t but apparently no one gives a f*ck because there's a 0.00001% chance a kid might die.

Also for that story of 925 quarantined, it's because something like 30 tested positive (not even 30 sick, just 30 positive). So keep in mind that's not 925 positive. And not all of the 30 are even sick. I know some of the quarantined kids in that 925 btw.

My teenager is starting 11th grade distance learning. She’s really bummed she can’t see her friends. The word is that’ll go back to campus after first semester. But who knows.
My toddler turns 3 in October and supposed to start with the school district for services. Since it’s not likely she’ll start till after first semester ends, I will be home schooling preK with her. I already have her curriculum lined up. I’ll be staring her on Monday when my teenager starts. This way both kids are on the same school calendar.
It would be nice for the kids to be with peers for social learning (both are on the Autism spectrum), but for now we have to work with what we got.

Yeah I can read, it's just ridiculous that if one has it, contact trace quarantine is inevitable, and what's that look like for people who work (not from home)?

Every other week you may have been exposed so here's another 2 weeks off?

This is fking crazy.

It's a real problem. We're trying with virtual clubs and lots of online meetings, but kids need to be in a structured environment with their peers. Next year will be a wash.

Hopefully, they'll be distributing an effective and safe vaccine to reach people by the end of next year. Kids will probably be among the last to get it.

We're going with in person because:

-She's an only child so she desperately needs the social interaction aspect of in-person. If I had an older kid I wouldn't worry about this as much
-She already did several weeks of summer camp and it went fine, no kids or counselors got it
-Kids aren't even affected by this shiit
Kids do get it. Thankfully less than 100 have been killed by it here...so far. They can definitely pass it to grandparents.

They don't know why kids are affected less. Some theorize we have hidden them better, or perhaps have partial immunity from other vaccines...but they don't know.

First and Third grade

Last year was a nightmare, not only did they have to learn remote, they had to learn how to use a computer.

Both kids have had a tutor all summer to get ahead of the school year.

I live in Connecticut, we have one of the lowest transmission rates in the country right now so we are going to take our chances until they tell us not to.

Back to school for sure. Risk is zero for them and they need to get back to a routine and see their friends again. We could keep them home if we thought it was the right thing to do, but we don't. They will be in every extracurricular activity that they were in last year, as long as we can do so. Starting grade 2 and 4.

Ironically enough, the parents I know that are keeping their kids home this fall didn't do so hot on the homeschooling thing.

The real impact will be down the road when all these kids grow up scared of life and socially behind worse than ever.

5 and 1 year old here. They're both back in daycare and the 5 yo starts Kindy in a few weeks.

I would homeschool before I did virtual kindergarten lmao. I don't think she'd learn anything at that age. Plus a lot of what you learn in Kindergarten is social skills, listening to teacher, learning in a classroom format etc. She needs to be there.

Ours are going back, full time in person. We live 3 blocks from the school so no busses.

They have to pre-screen at home, wear a mask until they are in their classroom, and we bought them Chromebooks so they don't have to use the shared ones.

Back Sept 1.

I think the one factor people forget is the impact on the faculty...it's not so much about the children's health as it is the teachers that COULD be seriously impacted health-wise.

I've got a better one for you. Oldest also plays Vball. They started school workouts over the summer (no ball, just workouts in "pods"). A coach from another sport was a "close contact" so they shut down all sports workouts over the summer. Crazy.

There is a recent study that suggested kids likely had some immunity due to recent contact with other coronaviruses. The longer it has been since you have been in contact with other coronaviruses the more likely it was that your body would have a tough time dealing with this one. It suggested this was the reason older patients were dying at a higher rate.
You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.

THIS.

The amount of actual learning that a grade 3 student needs is minimal. I know that if I spent 30 minutes a day with my daughter on math, 20 minutes on reading, and 20 minutes on writing she would be miles ahead of where she was with public schools. What was frustrating was doing the online filler/busywork, like reading about peru or camels. If the are mandated to stay home, there is no way I'm doing virtual classrooms. I'll do homeschool.

Seems like a viable alternative at the moment. Limited contact.

Good luck, I know the feeling, and my kids don't want to use computers for anything but looking up pictures of stuff like Godzilla.

Afraid of this tbh, as we approach half a year of limited contact recommendations.

I would homeschool before I did virtual kindergarten lmao. I don't think she'd learn anything at that age. Plus a lot of what you learn in Kindergarten is social skills, listening to teacher, learning in a classroom format etc. She needs to be there.
Almost everything on the planet/published research indicates the same thing, that human contact, social interaction and play in these formidable years is key to not growing up being a socially awkward and underconfident fukup.

There is a recent study that suggested kids likely had some immunity due to recent contact with other coronaviruses. The longer it has been since you have been in contact with other coronaviruses the more likely it was that your body would have a tough time dealing with this one. It suggested this was the reason older patients were dying at a higher rate.
And comorbid conditions like obesity, degraded general health, smoker generation, etc.

I've never seen flu data published/MSM like C19, nor any other diseases for that matter. I'd hedge my bets that more kids die from domestic issues, drug addicted parents, starvation, etc., other end of the spectrum, but real none the less.
