Yes, the world is rapidly moving to the point where billions of people will be unnecessary in the workforce.

in this country? no

there isn't enough accountability in the government spending to be able to properly fund something like that without jacking up taxes. though it probably could be done by trimming the fat off the government, i don't see that happening. too many powerful people in cushy positions with good friends that would never take their jobs away

I do provided it doesn't remove the incentive to work and allows people to effectively transition into other jobs. Food stamps and rent/mortgage subsidies would be a better way to go. People should have their necessities but not any luxuries.

Also the sad reality of this world is that a huge chunk of the population is parasitic. This is just the reality of the economy. We have an excess of trained people and a scarcity of job opportunities for then. People are normally underemployed. The elderly and children must be cared for as well. We could just heartlessly let the old, sick, and poor die, but that isn't the natural way. Naturally, people protect and care for their parents and children.

Yes, but not the version they are putting out there.

As it is we almost have it already. If you lose your job you can get foodstamps, unemployment, rent assistance. The problem is that there is a delay and that delay f*cks you up. Further a lot of people will fall through the cracks. College kids that graduated, no longer get financial aid, but didn't work enough time periods to qualify for unemployment. The house wife that gets divorced can't find a job right now and hasn't worked for five years. I could think of 500 reasons why someone would slip through the cracks and not get help.

My version is:

Everyone gets 1,000.00 every month on the first.

If you got a job then the first 1,000.00 you make every month gets paid back to the government. Anything beyond that you keep. So 90% of people nothing really changes.

This way if you lose your job you will just not have to pay back the 1,000.00.

If you graduate college and can't find a job you get some help until you do since you wouldn't be eligible for unemployment.

No one is going to be happy with that amount of money. Even a minimum wage job pays more. Which is key. You need to keep the incentive to work. The 1,000.00 is just a random number. The real amount should be 20% below minimum wage or something along those lines so there is incentive to work.

Nowhere close to a reality. Solutions to problems that don't exist are just new problems.

You'd need to earn $2000 in order to get the $1000 you'd get by not working at all.

It might not even need to be income per se, it could be more like straight up providing basic necessities for people who are displaced by automation of chit-tier jobs

That automation is gonna happen, and something will need to happen with the people it replaces. It's like ya'll have never watched Star Trek or something, the dream is a Utopian society where everything is so seamless and automated that people are free to pursue whatever they want

I get what you mean as a response to poverty and high unemployment.

But I'm against UBI in the context where you can obtain it simply for existing and not working.

Many (not all) of those people are constantly trying to game the system. How many would take 1000 a month if they had to, say, work 20 hours a week in an old folk's home doing menial tasks?

For basic income - basic work should be mandatory. This is what would instill a "work for a living" culture where it is sorely needed.

Only if it's for the mega corporations that get bailed out at every little problem and then layoff their workforce anyway while giving the C team bonuses.

As technology advances, the number of jobs available for people will dwindle.

That is a separate issue and a bit of hyperbole too. You cannot define the maximal set of "available jobs" using the set of jobs "today" while extrapolating for "technological advances".

I gave a salient example above. We are living in dystopia already - are the plebs ready to do pleb work or do they think they are owed a universal income simply for existing in society?

We have a supply/demand problem where the majority of people are underemployed and others can't find employment outright. I would much prefer some population control measure. UBI will just continually make the problem worst.
