Coming to terms with a road accident that was my fault (caused serious injury)
Not sure what I'm hoping to achieve with this thread but it's one way of talking about it.
I live in France and occasionally go back to the UK for work. For people who don't know, UK drives on the left, France on the right.
A few days ago I was driving on UK roads (I had been in the country for a day). Coming out of a single lane side road, I turned onto a main road on the wrong side of the road. I drive up the road for maybe a couple hundred yards and a car comes around the corner, we both brake but he hits me head on. I was driving a 40t hgv and he was in a small old car.
I have never done something like this before and I can't explain why I did it, other than a momentary lapse in concentration.
He broke his leg, badly, had to be cut from the car and airlifted to hospital.
I feel immense guilt for such a stupid mistake. We will know more news in a few days regarding his injury but it could potentially be life changing. I'm literally praying for good news but I don't know how I'll handle it if it's bad
I don't know what could happen to me re punishment but what mainly concerns me are the injuries to the other driver.
Didn't sleep much the first couple of nights following the accident but at one point I woke up and for a split second thought it was a bad dream, that was the best feeling in the world.

I have at least heard from the police officer who is on the case (and who was at the scene) that the family say that they harbour no hatred toward me

How does insurance work over there? Here in the U.S., our insurance companies would be trying to throw money at him lol.

Everyone makes mistakes, absolutely everybody. I have done some stupid **** in the past that could have ended on tragedy, and luckily it didnt, but we all prone to going trough bad "concentration phases" too, most of us are just lucky to not harm anybody.
You werent drunk, you werent texting or doing something irresponsible. It was a legit mistake, and it could happen to anybody.
Only thing you can do now is to man up and take the consequences as they come, and simply be there for that person. If its a good person he will totally understand it, if its a bad person he will probably give you **** and resent you. Thats out of your control though so theres no point thinking about it, simply focus on yourself, do your part to fix as much as you can about it and be grateful that the other person didnt die, or that you werent hurt too.
I know how you feel. Judging from your post i can tell that you would probably give anything in order to switch positions with that person and be the injured one. Thats good enough for me.
Just take a deep breath, relax, and aknowledge the fact that things have happened and you cant change that. We all have a few life changing moments in our lives, try to learn from this one and become a better person because of it.

"The flowers bloom, then wither... The stars shine and one day become extinct. This earth, the sun, the galaxies and even the big universe, someday will be destroyed. Compared with that, the human life is only a blink, just a little time. In that short time - people are born, laugh, cry, fight, are injured, feel joy, sadness, hate someone, love someone. All in just a moment. And then, are embraced by the eternal sleep called death."

**** man. It was just a mistake and I expect one you will not repeat.
It's tough having to totally re-adjust how you drive. I understand how you could fuk up.
Hopefully he and you will both be okay.
At this point what is done is done. Take the consquences when they come and keeping pushing forward.
We're all gunna make it.

honestly brah this is tough. Id like to remind you that your intentions were never bad and this mistake doesn't make you a bad person. I think offering support to the person and family involved is a step in the right direction and can take some guilt away. Good luck I hope everything comes out ok for you and the other guy

It was an accident, OP. If you weren't drinking, on drugs or texting, then don't be too harsh on yourself. Accidents happen. We've all zoned out while driving. I remember when I used to work at a club at night I'd get home and not even remember the drive. Who knows what could have happened if anything had gone differently. I hope you can come to peace with it and I really hope he has the best possible outcome and recovery.

He could have lifelong injury and broken bones usually mean deep tissue problems in the back and neck. I would prepare for him to sue your ass for 6 figures and tbh he would have every right to.
This could very well go to court to prove your negligence at the wheel.

The police already informed me about potential fines/points/custodial sentence

OP I know this is haram around these parts but you might want to consider asking for legal advice on reddit UK legal sub. But they will probably tell you to talk to a solicitor as this is serious.
A man went to hospital over you driving on the wrong side with a 40t HGV.
Could very well lose the license to drive HGVs at a minimum.

It's done and you can't change that. What matters are your actions from here on out.
You can see the man and apologise to make your peace and in future. You can be more weary of taking rest stops when you're tired in future. You can meet your legal obligations and take it on the chin.
At the end of the day mistakes and accidents happen, but they should only ever happen once. I love tapped a car looking at my phone once, tiny mistake with no repercussions but I've never looked at my phone while driving since. Learn and be better.

If op is being srs (never know here) and if he was in the uk he’d be banned for at least a year, fined, and obviously would struggle to ever be employed again as an hgv driver. He won’t go to prison without any serious aggravating factors.

For those asking, yes I am 100% serious. Also for those asking; no I hadn't been drinking or taking drugs, and I wasn't on my phone. I also wasn't tired as I had just left home 10min prior. The police know all this as I was breathalysed and tested for drugs. They also downloaded my tachograph data so they will know that I had only just got behind the wheel.
I am supposed to be getting news regarding the other drivers injury in the next couple of days.
