I'm thinking of dropping everything and living on the streets for one month.

I'll let my family and friends know what I am doing, lock my doors, and depart with only $30 and a backpack of assorted materials.

I'm doing it for perspective mainly. I'd like to know what it's like. Begging for food and sleeping outside at night under a bridge.

Has anybody done this or have any advice?

Seems chitty, but probably a good mental workout. You should record and document.

Sounds retarded but please report back on progress.

Yeah, I had a buddy who did this after High School, he never went to college and ended up moving away somewhere remote. He didn't beg, but he did eat out of a few dumpsters.

It sucks ass I did it my junior and senior year in highschool. Just don't if you want perspective then appreciate what have idiot

I didn't want to do this. My mom lost her job and I was a dish washer
I know who I am. And after all these years, there’s a victory in that.

I have three homeless friends.

If you are in a decent sized city or suburb, there are literally enough soup kitchens, food pantries, church meals and shelters to feed you better than the average person eats. If this fails try to hang out outside a mcdonalds or other fast food place. If you look the part someone will feed you within a couple of requests if you ask. They may feed you even if you dont look homeless - most people are good people.

The sleeping situation is.. precarious.
There are outdoor sleeping shelters. These tend to kinda suck (weather / noise) but are safe generally.
There are indoor group sleeping situations. These are safe in general. These are typically run like a prison. Meal time is the same time every day. You will be searched. Rules vary but many items will not be allowed such as anything that holds any kind of pills even if its just tylenol or vitamins, knives, many things my friend isnt allowed to bring a cup of soda for some reason. Staff at these facilities have total control. Any tyoe of disrespect even looking at them wrong they can eject you and ban you they do not need a reason and even if they did the rules are extensive enough they can find one. These facilities have curfews. So for example maybe curfew is 7 pm. If you aint in there by then or convincingly explaining your job situation requires you to come in later you aint gettin in.

Sleeping outside isn’t inherently dangerous but it can be. Theft is rampant in homeless communities. Many stories of going to the bathroom to pee coming back and the phone is gone my one friend had happen. Other friend laptop stolen this way. Sleeping outside is a very precarious dance. Usually they will sleep outside an abandoned office building or business building. I’ve never had one of them explain this i figured this out observing them.
- anywhere near neighborhoods and communities is asking to be harassed by cops.
- my first thought would to be get somewhere alone think deep in a forest or in an abandoned home or shed but no. Homeless do not typically do this for two reasons. Safety. It is not safe to be in a location where someone could rape or kill you and no one can hear you calling for help. There is a reason some serial killers and murderers historically target runaways, prostitutes and the homeless they are not missed as quickly which reduces chances of being caught.

Overall as long as you aren’t in the hood or trailer park its not that dangerous being homeless from what ive seen. There is safety in numbers but also increases visibility. Homeless people have their own culture, customs and culture. The closest analogy is prison. Word gets around who the bike thieves are, who the dangerous people are, who the good kind people are. I recently asked a friend if i would survive ok in his shelter. He said no because you’ll try to fix/save people and it will end in you being booted from the shelter as well as having social problems with people attempting to take advantage. Parts of me find the whole thing fascinating. One of the guys calls thieves and violent or rude people in the community “Pig people”. He lamented to me a couple years ago one of the pantries he goes to the workers call him “the bag man”. He ties all his life belongings to his bike. He hates that name.
