i'm a logical thinker, and even when the cop killings are of my fellow black men i'm a "let me see the whole footage first" person.
...but do ya'll hear yourselves when you say "i'm reserving judgement" on shooting an autistic 13 year old????just lol. Short of them kicking open the door to see him holding an AR or flamethrower what's the justification? 2 grown ass men with tazers, and a baton... "nah fuk that, let's pull the guns out" u w0t m8?
defunding the police is the last thing we should do. we need to double down on training and raising the psychological bar for entry. some of these dudes are thrice baked potatos.

She would have been better served calling for an EMT/fire department. But I'm sure that the poor woman never expected it to go so wrong. She was likely just overwhelmed by the situation.
IMO you don't call the police unless you are fairly sure that adding guns and legal complications can't make it worse, or you know that not calling them could put you into some legal jeopardy. There is no guarantee that the police will see your situation the same way that you do.

Didn’t read the thread but the parent is partly to blame for using the cops.
When you are a hammer, everything is a nail. You don’t chose to use a hammer to glue pottery together.
You shouldn’t rely on the cops when your kid gets mad.
I am speaking with hindsight, but I don’t feel like this situation really requires it to understand calling the cops in the first place was an overreaction.

In order to get more educated/qualified individuals and to be able to screen out schitty candidates. You need a much higher pay-scale. In order to increase police training. You also need a massive increase in man power. Because every time guys are out doing 'training' that's a body that's not working. Etc.
Nobody wants to be the voice of reason that says we need to increase police funding, manpower and training. In order to increase standards and have more 'professional' officer's on the road.

From the looks of that video, the kid isn't the only one with mental issues.

And for "dont call armed police" well if im in a traffic accident or if i have a medical emergency i might call 911. People call police when they need help not when the are requesting a squad of wannabe terminators. These days the mantra people are saying is Never call the cops they arent here to help just to make arrests. Thats what i have heard conservatives swearing by. People want to believe the police force can help them and theyll get a real man or a group of people to help defuse a situation that can occur in life, people who arent involved and are fresh and ready not someone who will open fire on their children rather than place themselves in the smallest possible risk. They are expecting someone trained and capable and armed with tools of all our technology and training. For **** sakeHard to say if its justified or not with the limited information here. Many agencies don't really train/equip officers to deal with severely mentally ill people. Maybe they royally fugged up. Maybe it was completely justified.
I'm a cop, back when I was a rookie got call once from a family about their 12 year old chasing the father around the house trying to stab him. The only thing that saved the guy was he ran faster then the 12 year old and was able to get outside. Put a gun on the kid and told him drop the knife or I'd shoot him. He immediately dropped it and complied. Parents absolutely freaked out that I put a gun on their kid. They were the liberal snowflake type that never spanked him or disciplined him. He did have some kind of mental issues per his parents. But while he had 0 respect for his father, as soon as he faced me the kid became docile and compliant. Kid had a 10" kitchen knife in his hand... And they wanted me to be officer who didn't use force or talk 'mean'....
I've said it before and I'll say it again. The majority of the problems in this world revolve around sh!tty parents that can't or don't raise their children right. Then when the police inevitably have to deal with them and things get out of hand. People want to blame the police for how the altercation goes.
If your child is so violent and out of control you feel the need to dial 911 to have armed police officer's deal with him. You really don't have a place to criticize them for their actions. I can't even begin to imagine a world where I'd call the police to deal with a child.

Assume dispatch filled you in.
In this situation (12 year old with a knife and mental issues) why wouldn't lead have rubber bullets or taser while flanked backup is drawn if things get hairy? A 12 year old with a rubber bullet to chest is going down and dropping that knife in a split second.
I already know the answer. Wife is an attorney that goes after cops on the regular, but it's bull**** that liability prevents you guys from taking the best action. Especially when more than half the time you end up sued anyway and the city pays out millions on our fcking tax dollars.
Clown world.

I understand police not needing to face danger theyre forced into i do. But let me tell you, you arent that ****ing special. If you arent willing to put yourself into danger to confront a child with a knife you never should have applied to be a cop. Ever. There are people out there who put themselves in far more danger than cops and you dont see them bitching and moaning.

If you call an upset autistic child a crazy person in a snooty superior way youre a piece of **** and shouldnt be a cop or have an opinion on anything. An adult yes. A child no. Thats truly ridiculous.
There are a million ways they could have done this better. Physical subdue, taser, let him go. He wasnt armed. They forgot to drop their fake evidence knife to corroborate their bull**** they are just saying ummm we shot him because we thought he was armed.

We don't need to defend, we need to REFUND and allocate LE dollars towards proper training for the modern environment and raise the bar.
It's well known that precincts won't hire folks that score too high on intelligence tests because it means they're less likely to tow the line on bad policing and will i stead have critical thinking skills.
Wash out the dumb and ****ty cops and spend the extra money on training good cops. This isn't infantry war. Better to have 500k highly trained, specialized, and intelligent officers than 800k where half are morons and afraid of their own shadow.
Create more funding for departments and pay them better but only take top candidates that are willing to be held responsible.
No immunity BS.

I bet this chit happens all the time. It doesn’t seem as though it was an actual medical emergency.
But if it isn’t a medical emergency, and cops don’t need to be involved, and the parent has identified themself as not being able to handle it.....
What do you do?

Sad story. What happens if when he wakes up, he’s not autistic?
Entire NYPD should go on strike. You'll see then how quickly the mayor changes his tone.

The analogy of hammer and nail is not only irresponsible but also a misinterpretation of what a LEO's job and duty is.
Sure, there are circumstances where they have to be the hammer against the nail. That's life son.
But if the mentality is going into every situation with that frame of mind it makes deescalation impossible and is the reason we're literally discussing this in this thread.
Dat ain't it boyo.

For **** sake
You've got a hostile person running around with a 10" knife. On your belt you have a gun, pair of handcuffs, pepper spray, and a baton. You can either handle the situation with what you've got or go sit back in your car and hope the person doesn't stab anyone then you assume liability for not acting in the best interest of public safety. Commen sense dictates when someone arms themself with a weapon you one up them. If they have a knife you one up with a firearm. If you are alone you can't risk trying to pepper spray.
See how quickly the narrative can get skewed?

I already know the answer. Wife is an attorney that goes after cops on the regular, but it's bull**** that liability prevents you guys from taking the best action. Especially when more than half the time you end up sued anyway and the city pays out millions on our fcking tax dollars.
Clown world.

When someone hostile is charging you its not as simple a people think to just deflect/use non-lethal means.

But many cops think they're demi-gods and watched too many episodes of The Shield or "fill in action movie".

For example, I've heard many people talk about how lacking martial arts training (and even firearms training) is in most police forces. The argument goes that if the officers don't have the skills to subdue a person "peacefully" (with minimum appropriate force, let's say), they're forced to escalate the situation by reacting with deadly force.Didn’t read the thread but the parent is partly to blame for using the cops.

I just watched this Jocko Willink clip earlier today and he talks about this very issue. Also, if you listen to the letter that apparently comes from a cop, the cop says that they were, once upon a time, trained to see themselves as "warriors" in the academy and he goes on to complain that now they've become "guardians". To me, that seems wholly appropriate. The job of police is not to be at war with citizens. Isn't it even unconstitutional to deploy the military (excl. national guard) on American soil? It seems like avoiding chaos is one of the reasons that was deemed unconstitutional. A warrior's job is to go to war and kill if he must; a cop's job should be to serve and protect the citizenry. If your cops see themselves as warriors, who do you think they see as the enemy?

My mom was 5'2 @100 lbs.
By the time I was 13 I was a starting running back and linebacker and 160 lbs.
If I had autism and or mental illness amd no father figure around my mom wouldn't have been able to do sh!t-all to stop me.
Fortunately I am not autistic, not mentally ill, and respected my mother and her word even when I had 150 lbs on her. But not everything is so clean.
Scared people call 911. That's what they do. Dispatch call goes out. Whoever gets there, gets there. If it's understood to be a violent situation cops lead.
This didn't, not ever should have, gone down like it did based on present information.
