It is also in politician's interests to engage in fear-mongering because it helps their image, and contributes to a subdued and compliant electorate. People are paralysed by fear, it is hardwired in our DNA to respond to it. It helped us when we were roaming the savannah, now not so much.

Unfortunately we have paleolithic emotions, medieval institutions and godlike technology.

Fear creates ratings which helps the media, and it creates compliance among the voting population. If people don't have the ability to analyse issues with nuance and critical thinking, they are more likely to believe simple, easy to follow cause-and-effect analogies. It has to be the easiest, most cowardly move in the politician's playbook: use fear, guilt and a show of force to look like you are achieving something ("protecting" the population).

If politician's adopt measures that are proportionate to the threat the pandemic faces, the public won't understand it. Much easier to shut everything down, destroy the economy and let the central banks print money to clean up the financial mess.

So it's not that "covid doesn't exist", it's that people like yourself lack the ability to analyse - there is only black and white for simpletons like yourself.
