Grew up playing video games all the time. Was 'that one friend' in every group who was really good at video games. Used to laugh at takes like the one OP had. Why? Because, despite playing video games I:

- was never getting in trouble
- avoided things like alcohol, drugs
- had a good GPA
- had a couple friends who also didnt get into trouble
- was never bored
- thought games helped with hand eye coordination and creativity (lol)

It was only until I got older that I realized those were not measures of success for a man. And the dopamine you get from video games is temporary. Growing up if you have real experiences in the real world: Camping, rock cllimbing, playing sports, being leader of some school board position, whatever literally could be a million things - those all stick with you and develop you more than any video game. I spent probably hundreds of hours on COD in high school. Do I remember any awesome online win? Any badass kill? Anything that is relevant to today? No. Just a vacuum of time.

Dont think video games are the devil but it is 100% a time suck

Also depends on the game though, Shadow of the Colossus stuck with me, the nostalgia from games with buddies, stuff with great stories.

To be fair, that's partially due to your choice of game. Had you played something story driven, you might still cherish those memories until today. (So I agree to an extend it's still less awesome than if your went rock climbing).

When I was a kid, video games were "innocent" and morally righteous. You always found yourself playing a hero fighting against bad guys and evil monsters.

But since the late 90s video games took a turn; more and more games where you basically played a criminal with no moral code, who fought not categorically evil/bad people, but often law abiding civilians doing their job. So the moral zeitgeist actually got WORSE not better.

Also, with the improvement in graphics, the depiction of violence and bodily damage got far more real and impactive.

Video games aren't bad for kids, just be careful what you let them play.

I think it has it's time and place in childhood. Obviously behind academics, athletics, and getting chicks

like ages 6-12 playing classic N64, Ocarina of Time, Starfox, Smash Bros, etc. that stuff definitely helped me develop an imagination.

But once you get to 16+ it's for sure a time waster

Meh. As long as you balance the time, it works out. My kid has picked up some solid reading and critical thinking skills from his games. He still loves to play with non-electronic toys and go outside and all that jazz.

Not exactly, it gave me a passion for computers at a young age and I'm an extremely successful dude because of it.

Video games are big time wasters, when I lived with my cousin her kids would play video games instead of doing what needed to be done. One time I was bringing in groceries in from the car, and a $30 roast was stolen because they were so engrossed in the video game they couldn’t help me.

Another time, my cousin needed to do the dishes, it was his day to do them, but he played video games for two hours instead, then said he didn’t have time to do them because he needed to get to class.

Especially mmorpgs, once you get hooked on them no other game really hits the same and you just want to rot. I rotted 4 years of my early 20's away playing nothing but all the mmorpg's that were coming out at the time.

That's valid, guess it's all on mindset.
Don't use videogames as an escape but a media enjoyment thing.

Reason why I get full body for VR so I can dance for cardio for people.

Everything in moderation. Obv if you played warcraft for 12 hours a day you're prob mentally fked.

But like 99% of kids have played video games growing up and are just fine. You'll prob be weird if you didn't.

yeah im addicted to them as well.

Mainly during lockdown i had nothing to do, lost lots of gains and barely ate.

I quit cold turkey and was fine, i also started a month or 2 ago. But recently my gym was closed for about 4-5 days and in that space i already feel absolute dyel and like a cave creature

might need to just accept the fact that i cant play any games that are online since im so competitive
I'll see you on Mount Olympus

You can pretty much say this for any hobby that you don't particularly care for.

Personally, I think people need to mind their own business and let people enjoy different things.

I played videogames a bit when I was a kid (basically sega genesis to ps2 era). Then I got bored of videogames and started playing guitar and skateboarding. I did pretty well in school, too. My parents didn't really like videogames either so they kind of pushed me away from owning a ps3 or building a gaming PC during my teen years.

I started gaming again (ps4) pretty casually during my college years, which was just a few years ago, and I think I still have a healthy relationship with videogames. In college I still spent more time outdoors and hanging with friends and stuff. I don't play everyday, but some games really do consume my time if I let them (dark souls, fromsoftware games for sure are my favorite). I really like story driven games, horror games, and videogames that have tough puzzles. Not every videogame is brainless shooting like COD.

I sometimes feel like I missed out on gaming during my teen years (middle school through high school) but I'm kind of glad I picked up other hobbies and focused my time on more important things. Plus I didn't have a job or money back then to fuel a gaming addiction like I have now lol.

If I had a kid I wouldn't mind them playing single player/story driven games, but not online gaming, which is way more addictive and toxic af.

Two hours a day? Well yeah that’s too much imo.

I think video games have some benefits, but maybe an hour every other day.

Anything beyond that and you’re right. That sh*t is trash.
"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."
