If ball earth rotates West->East, how does an airplane travel West->East?
Fantasy ball Earth rotates East at 1,000mph (wow cool number)
Airplanes travel at 500mph
When an airplane gets into the air, why doesnt the land zoom away from it, at 500mph (or less from "air viscosity")
Instead, it takes LESS time to travel from New York to Frankfurt (7 hours) than it does going back (8 hours)

1.) Because air isnt very dense. At all. Its like....1/1000th the density of water and the top speed achieved underwater is 23 mph. 23 x 1000 = 2300 mph. But top speed achieved in air is like 5,000 mph.
2.) Gravity only pulls down, not laterally (relative to the center of gravity. I.E. the earth). Not to mention the atmosphere locks in gases that keep planes in the air which use tail winds to their advantage

It's travelling relative to the Earth

A. There is less stuff "pushing" the plane
B. The viscosity is lower (not sure actually saying this)
And idk why you did 23x1000, you mean 23+1000? And its 23,000 also

Imagine ball Earth, and you're on the top of it moving right. 6 hours later you're on the right side of it. What happened to your speed going right ----> ?

B. Viscosity only has anything to do with liquids. And since there are no boats and submarines in the sky.....
To get the theoretical speed limit of an air vehicle, you multiply the top speed (23 mph) times 1000 since you had to divide to get 1/1000 (air is 1/000th the density of water). And yes i made a typo

Fun fact for miscers:
Gravity is about 1/3% less at the equator compared to when you're at the poles - due to centrifugal force of earth's rotation (for the pedantic: I mean the resultant force of gravity (which is acutallly constant (barring variations in Earths shape and density) ) vs. the centrifugal force).
And to answer the OP, the rotation of the earth makes no difference if the air is static relative to the ground. The main reason for limiting the speed of an aeroplane is drag - speed relative to the air around it is all that matters.
If an aeroplane could fly in a vacuum - a constant thrust would eventually see it approaching the speed of light.

Scientists still can't fully explain how airplanes fly. Often is said "lift from air moving faster over than under the wing causing low pressure." But no one can explain why the faster moving air creates the low pressure. And the biggest monkey wrench in the works- they can't explain why planes can fly invertedhttps://www.scientificamerican.com/a...ay-in-the-air/
My guess is the answer to OP's question is actually very complicated and involves relativity. From the reference frame of the aircraft, the world is actually spinning under it.
I don't really understand it but its interesting to read about. Steve Hawking put together a good book for non physicistshttps://www.fisica.net/relatividade/...ry_of_time.pdf

gravity pulls stuff that means we move together with the Earth.
This is the reason why we land to same place after we jump

wait I always though when you fly the across the atlantic it's quicker one way than the other precisely because of this reason.
I fly all the time and swear it's like a 1-2 hour difference

Lol a bunch of idiots ITT. The srs answer is because the atmosphere is also spinning along with the earth so just because you get off the land surface doesn't mean you escaped the spinning ball. You need to leave the atmosphere for this concept to take effect.
Never neg first but always neg back crew

When aeroplanes are flying against the Earth's spin, they have to use double engine power.
When aeroplanes are flying with the Earth's spin, then they basically just hover above and then in x hours they descend vertically and land in the desired destination.
