I don’t think depression or anxiety are real

Are those feelings real? Absolutely. Is it a “chemical balance” that requires medication? No. Both of those stem from upbringing and lifestyle choices. When I was a teenager i ate like chit, had low self esteem, and viola was always depressed. Same with anxious people, usually comes from lack of exposure therapy

Someone who exercises regularly, eats healthy, gets plenty of sleep, has a active social circle, and works hard with a purpose in their life won’t be depressed. Someone who is present, confident, level headed won’t be anxious. No surprise in a digital age with chit parenting that depression and anxiety have skyrocketed

It’s a lot simpler than this.

Life is full of winners and losers.

I always lol at losers who think they are winners by coping hard.

Depression and anxiety can be hereditary. Can also be imbalance of hormones. Both of these things will not be cured by your proposals. I do agree people are over medicated by drugs that simply don't work though.

Are you aware that there are people in this world that have a severe medical condition which causes them to be that way? My mother for instance is one of those people. She is a truck driver that has bad knees and a bad back from driving the truck but you probably do not care about that case either. Oh well I am not one of those people I am 6'4" 245lbs and I exercise every day. I would love to see you say something like to my mother in front of me. Probably never happen though you are probably just an internet tough guy. I doubt very seriously you would say that to someones face. Just my thought. What do you think. Oh I am sorry you probably do not have a brain. I on the other hand will be happy to buy you a plane ticket to come here and see if you have the nerve to say that to someone I know.

i've had periods in my life where things were GREAT

and then all of the sudden i smoked green or something and had a bad reaction. and all of the sudden i was fighting with this thing. realistically, my life was great. just a few days prior everything was great and not much had changed.

but there was like a physical reaction that created a state (and this is what i'd call a chemical imbalance). it influenced thoughts a certain way even when i was not like that or did not want to be like that

however, you keep fighting and it's temporary

the problem with depression is that fight is more taken out

I think the number is over represented, there are definitely people who don't suffer from the type of chemical imbalances required for a clinical diagnosis.

Problematically, our healthcare system is literally a for profit system...Why wouldn't doctors prescribe medication more frequently?

I think it's something to consider, how the easy solution is more medication and is also the more profitable one.

Yea that's where I'm coming at. I haven't felt 'depressed' in years since turning my life around. When I was a schlub I was depressed regularly.

Chit lifestyles and decisions are also hereditary.

Control for that and it likely disappears. Oh your alcoholic poor fat dad had depression? Now you have it to, but you also have all the same traits he does? No surprise there

I tend to agree with you often. Especially when I ponder whether people had these conditions thousands/millions of years ago, since our brain isn't much different

yeah its real. its probably overdiagnosed though and its diagnosis is more subjective then something like an aids test, of course even those arent as black as white as they appear.

seasonal affective disorder is def real too. You can go look at a map of the world at suicide rates and see how high they are up in russia and anywhere in the north, then look at chit holes in the middle east, in mexico, africa, ect where they are poor, there are wars or cartels and the suicide rates are pretty low. I believe it is because theyres more sun srs.

i lived in the north east and its dark at like 5pm in the winter, like nearly midnight dark by 5pm. idk how people in alaska deal with that chit. Like I dont have it to where it would be a diagnosable condition but I would say it is definately depressing as chit, enough so that it is one of the major factors I dont want to live in the north.

I don't support anti depressants but depression definitely exists outside of what you listed. I doubt you've experienced the type of depression where you would immediately kill yourself if you didn't have personal responsibility (family etc)

Strong agree from me OP. Pills and/or feel-good therapy are not the solution to every single person's feelings of inadequacy or anxiety.

Unbelievable that millions of Americans are dosing on amphetamines or barbiturates just to cope with their life in wealthiest and freest society in human history and are convinced when the pills don't work, more pills are the best solution.

Take control of your destiny, make life-affirming choices, avoid toxic people and relationships, and watch 100% of your psychological problems evaporate in 6 months.

yes, they did.

so, imagine doing something embarrassing right now. if you can't think of anything. let's say i put you on the spot about a subject you don't know and make you make a speech in front of a large audience of people. let's say 10,000 people

you feel anxious at all? that little bit of anxiousness that you're feeling is a result of you wanting to feel like you're in a group. if you don't know what you're talking about you're going to be exposed as a fraud and not accepted into the group; laughed at, ridiculed, mocked, etc.

jail for instance is the ultimate isolation.

basically anxiety exists any time there's a threat for you to be outcast by the group and the "group" is whatever normal society is

i have seen arguments about an increase in this stuff once we went to individual housing. i would guess that it was less prevalent back then because humans were in smaller cohesive groups and not separated as much

The feeling of anxiety is real. The condition isn't. And the solution certainly isn't medication.

Anxiety has skyrocketed in the last decade, like tenfold. Very common among working women in big cities for example. Surely there is a root to your anxiety or depression that needs to be addressed, not the fact that working 55 hours a week for some soulless marketing corporation to support living in a 500 sq ft apartment with the closest relationship being your dog and daily wine bottle isnt the issue.

Or if you are some broke rustbelt tradie. You arent depressed because of a chemical imbalance, you are depressed because you have no purpose, no real skill, are addicted to tobacco products and garbage food and clinically obese.

Taking medication doesnt treat the underlying issue. It's just whack-a-mole. So many people would rather take a pill than an honest and hard look at their life and realize they need to make big changes.

Being anxious (nervous is what you really mean) is not 'anxiety' as its described today. People complain of anxiety attacks when they're just sitting home doing nothing.

OP on fire ITT.

Would add a caveat that being a Midwest tradie who could provide for his loving and stable family used to be valued by society and therefore be a life-affirming path to follow. Thus, 100 years ago, the same man would not be "depressed" in the slightest. He would wake up every day knowing he was an essential cog in the machine and if he didn't do the needful, that little ecosystem would come crashing down.

Nowadays that same tradie is struggling to make ends meet, while his fat disgusting wife nags him for not being Chad the bodybuilder/doctor she follows on insta, his sloot daughter is getting all her holes dominated by a Machine Gun Kelly looking *******, and his ex-son's gender reveal party is scheduled for next week.

I'd be phucking depressed all the time too.

multiple times now i have recounted my recent life history to a medical practitioner and they have offered to prescribe an antidepressant. no thanks. btdt- best case a short term lift, can make you feel worse, usually has negative sides and then stops working.

sincerely don't like to take meds. misc talks chit about the one i do take, but it really makes a difference, it continues to work, and i have no desire to up my dose.

agree about seasons/sun making a big difference.

imo a lot of the increase is due to forcing ourselves into an unnatural lifestyle created by the modern world- groups too large, lack of regular human connection/isolation, lights all night/ignoring circadian cycle, and too much time indoors.

I am in the best shape in my life. Just finished a npc show, I have some friends, I work full time and I am in school pursuing a cyber degree, I have a son that I love and try my best to give him the life he wants and it is still a battle that I deal with 24-7 and its only gotten worse due to my separation/divorce. I have been in tears multiple times during the day dealing with this. I take time off of work because I dont want my co workers to see me like that. I have times were I get a calmness and feel peace if I was to just disappear forever and I welcome it but I dont because I know I have family that would never recover if I was to end it. I am on meds and they have done nothing but help me as I get severe night terrors, I cant sleep and that usually leads me to feeling even worse about life.

It is very real and no one ever takes it serious until someone they were close with commits suicide.

i don't believe medication is as effective as something like CBT; however, that might be more down to user error than it is the medication. i believe in theory the medication is supposed to be used when it gets really bad. then they put in the correct steps to correct it and that's that. but this has multiple layers because it can depend on why the doctor is prescribing it and also how the person is using it. if they are just taking the medication without putting in the work then it's absolutely just a band-aid

separately, i also believe the habits without medication are stronger forming as well

BUT in regard to to the "feeling" being real but the condition isn't. if you want to really go there then it's possible that your current condition is also not real. in the moment they are certainly

another component to what you're talking about is that anxiety is often comorbid with depression. typically people that feel anxious about something avoid it because it's uncomfortable. and that avoidance results in low self esteem which then develops into depression

so the "anxious" feeling is continually fed by the condition which is depression

you're kind of right, and kind of aren't

and like i said before, if you want to go to the "states" aren't definable then your current condition isn't definable. we're all kind of in a temporary state

Then it's the PTSD that gives you depression and not a chemical imbalance

Trauma is still an external factor, similar to job loss, breakup, or chit diet, or whatever. Unfortunately with PTSD you cant really control it as easy as the rest.

But the point still stands
