Even with a pedalboard-amp rig they have their place for recording.

That's something that has always been a massive PITA for me. You get a great sound in the room with an amp and then you stick an SM57 in front of the speaker and get a completely different sound. Then you try a condenser or ribbon mic further away and it sounds too dark or muddy. Combining both requires some experimenting to avoid phase issues. If you're lucky you'll eventually dial in a great sound with a little EQ, some channel strip plug-ins, etc. and lo and behold you might even prefer the recorded tone more than the one in the room but that difference going back and forth does your head in.

Or you never get to that stage because you're too busy dicking around with different speakers and entertaining thoughts of buying more expensive microphones, building an isolation cab, etc.

My solution was to use cab sim/IRs at the end of the tube/analog chain and hear the same sound all the time at any volume through studio monitors. I haven't changed cab or mic settings in 18 months. Also with IRs you can run your effects after them and that allows you to record them separately so you're not stuck with a boatload of delay that sounded great at 2am when you're three sheets to the wind but listening back to it in a mix it sounds like a mess.

Cliffs: all this stuff has its place.

As for pedals I like a good boost pedal into a single channel amp. Essentially more gain when I want it and less when I don't. I use a treble bleed on the guitar to tighten up the bottom end so having a boost gives me more options if say I like a tighter sound but need more gain or if I want a warmer sound with more gain I wind up the guitar volume and switch the boost off. Probably not the answer you wanted but that's the best I can do.

I had my eye on this boutique overdrive for awhile. My amp is an Orange OR15 I have tons of gain available but the higher gain settings on the amp are very loose sounding as opposed to that focused American sound so I was looking for something to tighten the sound up.

For what it’s worth I’ve probably never tried a good amp sim. My realm of experience with digital recording is mucking about inside GarageBand. But I already have a condenser mic and interface so I might as well just mic my amp and go to town

Also even though it’s switchable to 7-15 watts should I invest in an amp attenuator? I can’t turn up my Orange with any significant gain or distortion past 1-2 clicks on the master volume lol wayyyy to loud but I really wanna push the tubes

I'd probably try an EQ pedal to tighten it up and shave off some mud. Or bite the bullet and get an amp with a tone you like.

This is my go to boost and first in the chain. Runs internally at 100V+.

I actually play a lot of Doom/Stoner Rock the Orange is perfect for me, but other metal I like to play the high gain sounds just aren’t focused enough. So I was hoping a good overdrive maybe even a distortion pedal might help.

EDIT: The Orange was my dream amp for awhile, it’s just really NOT ideal for stuff like Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Randy Rhoads stuff

It’s more vintage voiced

You might be able to get tighter tones via pedals and whatnot on your Orange but it isn't the same as authentic poweramp/preamp gain that's voiced for tight sounds.

Tbh though I see real tube amps as impractical at this point and amp modelers as the more prudent approach. But you've already gone in on pedals and chit so it's probably best for you to remain an amp-cel.
My friend that I jam with is kind of a traditionalist and always talks down when I tell him about the stuff I read on here and demos I watch of new stuff like amp profilers and recording. I’m not opposed to using any of that stuff myself and it might be more practical in home use and recording situations

But at this point I’m already heavily invested into the amps and pedal stuff

I've went through 10 pages of the thread so far and I guess it might be safe to say metal and shred is the most popular here?

I still love shred. I started playing in the late 80s so I learned lots of that

The pandemic has given me a chance to renew my passion for the guitar and tho I don't like country music much at all, the guitar players are nasty.

I hate Brad Paisleys cheesey songs but he can play, as well as Johnny Holland, Junior Brown and Brent Mason. Ive been really getting into Jimmy Olanders from Diamond Rio lessons on YT, tho I don't think I've ever heard a DR song.

I'll post some of Jimmy lessons later on. He's a great teacher and it's relaxing just watching him

Here's a vid of Jimmy O giving a lesson. No embed skills yet

I love listening to all forms of rock and metal. But I also listen to most forms of guitar based music.

But when it comes to actually playing guitar I’m starting to fall into the psychedelic Stoner Rock stuff.

I like how that stuff sounds.

Cot damn Steve Lukather had some great work. Rosanna solo is gold and everything in Hold the Line

Went ahead and bought an Overdrive pedal.

I got a Mythos Mjolnir. It’s a Klon clone like your guys were suggesting and it seems to have a good sound. Can’t wait to try it out

Django Reinhardt over here lol. It sounds good brah, why you selling it? I’ve been looking at a bunch of acoustics actually I hardly play acoustic but I need a new one. My old Fender that I’ve had since I was 10 is kinda dinky and doesn’t sound as resonant as I would prefer.

I just keep it for sentimental reasons
