I've had a few breaks in my work over the last 10 years where I have nothing to do, so I'm at home essentially living the retired life for a couple of weeks. Man it's so boring, makes me want to not retire. Feels pretty toxic actually.

I think I'd rather work part time somewhere or run a small home service business, maybe a lawn service or something, during retirement.

The retired people I know now seem so bored. I have one relative that was an accountant, did very well, just retired in his late 50s. Other than playing golf it seems like he's just rotting. My dad died not long after retiring in his 50s too.

I enjoy having time off to sleep, look after my diet/health, hit the gym, read books, watch informative YouTube videos, party on weekends and study anything and everything that interests me in the world. Been doing this since Covid began and still prefer it to working.

I'm already sleeping well and training, I try to learn a new language, but there are a lot of other stuff I want to do. But when you are busy with work from 6.30-15.30, you already miss a lot of hours every week in which you could spend on doing said stuff

Im going into my "retirement" plan with the assumption that SS wont be around to help subsidise retirement. I like the eastern idea of families that stick together, it was always my plan to have my parents spend their days with me and I hope that my kids would do the same for me. I think having an elder around helps shape morals and values in those who are younger, plus it helps things like childcare and other chores. Another thing is that any retirement money can be spent on healthcare and/or passing more onto the next generation. Obviously this sorta depends on what your relationship is with your kids but its certainly possible and it should be something that the west can learn.

I guess then perhaps ldar is right for you.


As for myself, I was up at 430 and am currently sitting on a frozen lake in the middle of nowhere catching walleye. One of my big interests is fishing.

And if I hadn't had opportunities that have allowed me to live the incredible life I live, you know what I'd be doing? Something! If I didn't have the home gym that wheeling and dealing, online classifieds and clear out auctions allow me to have, I'd be up at 430 running, or doing bodyweight chit instead.

If I wasn't able to have a snowmobile or good gear, I'd walk out to fish with a hand line, like I did as a kid.

The desire to do things comes first, and unless that thing is skydiving or drag racing, there is always a way.

And if you have no desires in life outside of selling your time for money, then ldar and leave the cool chit in life for the rest of us I guess.

If you’re doing something you love to do, why retire before you’re unable/too old to do it anymore? I can see cutting back on the amount of work you’re doing, because you’re going to be more tired as you get older probably. But retirement in my eyes it’s just code for fishing and watching TV. I don’t have any interest in living that way. Serious.

In my opinion the key's to financial success are:

-Stay debt free.
-Have a good work ethic.
-Live frugally.
-Make smart purchases and smart investments. No impulse buys.

-Dedicate 10 years to your goal.


I spent the last 10 years absolutely grinding. Averaging 60h work weeks. Put money into retirement pension, 457(b) and a vanguard investment account.

My original goal was 2 million in the market and a six figure pension for retirement by 49. Despite buying a brand new home, truck, motorcycle and boat during that time frame. I'm on track to have a good bit more in the market then that. Enough for me to consider jumping my retirement to 44-45 years old and taking a smaller cut of the pension.


Given nothing. Paid my way through college. No fall back plan if I go broke or fall on hard times. Just hard work and being smart with money. I would say anyone can be a millionaire in America but the simple truth is most people are too lazy and have weak impulse control.

Yes. The real goal should be minimizing consumption and achieving financial independence.

You minimize consumption by figuring out what your real needs and wants are and buying only what actually gets them instead of mindlessly buying **** because your neighbors did or because people say you're supposed to. If you do this you should have a considerable surplus every paycheck that you invest and forget about.

If you start this lifestyle at 20 and save $500/month you'll have over $400k (in today's dollars, over $600k in future dollars) and a low cost lifestyle. I chose $500/month because that is achievable for the majority of people. You'll also likely have a close to paid off residence and no car payment.

Since you lived a lifestyle without wasting a bunch of money or the time needed to make that money you instead spent 20 years enjoying hobbies, golfing, fishing, whatever while your friends all have $3,000 mortgages and $1,000 in car payments they'll have until they die and no savings. For all you 10k/day CEOs, save and invest more and be a millionaire in your 40s.

Who is better off, they guy at 45 making $5k a month after taxes with $1,500 in bills and expenses (and half a million plus invested) or the guy making $10k/month with $7,500 in bills and expenses and nothing in the bank?

Couple reasons come to my mind, I’ve seen this before.

1. He hates his wife and work is a release from her.

2. He never developed hobbies and his identity is his job. Without that, he is dead.

3. A man of severe routine. He has to wake up at 6, drive to work, stop and get a paper, etc.




There’s lots of reasons, some people are passionate about what they do and it gives them lots of pleasure. The next step is scary for them.

The happiest guy i know, house shares and just travels every month or so by taking a Monday/Tuesday of work, works a normal job, making 35k a year, no mortgage/kids/debt.
