Reading actual books vs. E-readers

Which do you prefer?

Actual books are preferable to most but if you read a lot then you always have to store them and might run out of space.

E-readers are convenient because you can store a bunch on your device, but then again, it's not a "physical" book.

I love my Kindle. It's smaller than a book so it's easy to hold and take anywhere. I can also change the size of the font, which is nice.

I got a Kindle too. I was debating between that and an iPad but went with the Kindle since I don't need all the other functions of an iPad.

I read really fast so on vacation I'd have to lug around 6-8 books for a week for reading by the pool. So I love my Kindle.

I prefer books, but I already have two packed bookcases and don't have the space. Plus, reading on my iPad is convenient when reading in bed before sleeping since I can have the light off.

I also prefer physical books because I like to underline key points

I then compile summaries all key points in word docs

Yeah, I wouldn't want to read my books on an iPad with the backlight.

I've got a Kobo Aura one. It's nice. It's not your regular monitor, so it doesn't strain your eyes as much. You can also read comfortably in the dark or outside with it. It's just a better experience of reading than a book, unless you're the type of autist who just HAS to flip through pages.
It's got downsides though:
The ebook doesn't display colours. It handles pictures, but it'll display them in monochrome
It's slow. Don't think that it's tablet fat, it draaaags itself and flipping a page takes seconds

I think the pros outweigh the cons though and I enjoy using mine. I used to read a lot of books on my smartphone before, so it wasn't hard to transition from that to an actual e-reader

I like books, especially paperback ones easy to carry.

I do not mind reading on a tablet much. I think I digest more from a physical book.

when i read, i read non fiction and like to skip around. ereaders suck for that. they would be ok for a novel if you reading start to finish

Who said that? If I had to choose one over the other, I'd take an E-reader. I think I prefer an E-reader in general. Millions of books at your finger tip, you can read it in low light situations, look up an unfamiliar word in half a second, highlight, etc.

Only time I'd prefer paper is when studying from a textbook.

Never read an ebook besides previews online. They repulse me srs. It's the worst book medium imo as there isn't the physical connection as with a real paper book and its less immersive in general. I remember some studies showed there was less comprehension when reading digital too.

Though also not my preferred format, audiobooks are nice when you want to read while running or something. And when the author is doing the narration that's one of the main draws. Overall, paper is king.

Books from authors I like, or a specific world(fantasy), I prefer an actual book. Nothing can beat the smell of a new book then put it in your mini library.

For the rest, e-reader is fine.

In my kindle I have over 2,000 e-books, including those I've already read.

1. It saves a lot of physical space in your home.
2. You can carry as many books as you want in your kindle. You can read whatever/whenever/wherever you want.
3. You can download thousands of books in any text file format online free and by usingCalibre (my favorite free s/w)covert them to kindle format(mobi) and upload to your personal Amazon library. Also you can purchase most of the books cheaper than real books from Amazon.
4. The dictionary function helps you save a lot of time and a great way to increase your vocabulary.
5. You can choose the font and its size.
6. You can add or delete highlights, notes, and bookmarks anywhere/anytime on your kindle book.
7. Battery lasts a very long time.

and so on....

But lately I mainly use audiobooks because of my aging eye problems, hehe. I could listen to audiobooks while I jog.

I use my tablet to read books. Also use it to chitpost on misc. Also for naked yoga vids on youtube.

Was considering a paper white Amazon reader, but my phone & tablet work fine imo.

I prefer books. I spend most of my time looking at a phone/computer anyways. Wouldn't want to spend even more time when there's an easy alternative.

Plus, I like having a bookcase full of books. Kinda like having records or something in your house - it adds a nice touch and can be a talking piece for guests if you have similar tastes.

a catch 22 for me

I prefer reading a physical copy, less straining on the eyes and I feel like I can grasp the understanding better reading on paper. Also I like highlighting key points/ideas as I'm reading.

I get enough screen time as it is so would rather not, but it's convenient because you can store hundreds of books without them taking up space, can read from anywhere, etc. But reading from a phone is even worse ... but from time to time I do if say I have to wait an hour or two for my car to get serviced.

There is something classy about having a bookcase full of books in your house though.

Had an e-reader some years ago that just got it screen stuck, so never bothering again.

An e-reader cost the same as 10-20 books, so I'll go for the physical books. Too easy to accumulate chit on the e-reader that never gets read

As a Librarian, I prefer physical books. I have nothing against E-readers though. Whatever helps get someone reading is a good thing.

The best thing E-readers have going for them is the ability to find and purchase/borrow a book in an instant.

For physical books you have to hunt them down and sometimes not finding the book on the first try discourages ppl from trying again.

Yeah this is my biggest pet-peeve with them. The scrolling/flipping has a huge delay while an iPad would be quick and sleek.
