"Uncut Gems" was utter garbage and makes me really question film reviewers

92% positive on Rotten Tomatoes.

36 out of 38 "top critics" gave this film a positive review.

Watched a screener of this last night, thank God I didn't pay to see this, and thought it was utter trash.

Plot - Adam Sandler plays some type of jeweler in New York, he has a gambling problem, a crumbling family life, and he owes a lot of money to bad people.

Mix in some type of rare opal extracted from Ethiopia, and a fair amount of Kevin Garnett.

So Adam Sandler is part of a certain group, his character in the film is part of the same group, and the companies that own the "Top Critic" publications are part of the same group.

And a bad movie gets really great reviews and Oscar buzz?

Don't pay good money to see this. There is a perfectly watchable streaming copy online why not just watch it for free.

Inb4 Adam Sandler apologists and I was actually a fan of Punch Drunk Love, that film was much better than this one.
Look, you're my best friend, so don't take this the wrong way but, in 20 years if you're still here postin' in hhhnnnggg threads, beggin' for mod reps, and braggin' about whales you harpooned from POF, I'll f'in kill ya. It's okay. But it's a film that depends on a hyper chaotic situation to be remotely be interesting. It's also filled with a bunch of unlikable characters that I didn't care about. Movie critics are so desperate to hype anything that isn't a comic book or popcorn movie that they'll pimp above average films like these.

I liked it. Not mind blowing. It had an indy vibe and I think Adam Sandler did a good job. It's pretty chaotic and has a frenetic pace. I probably wouldn't watch it again for that.

Funny it took place in 2012 when everything changed.

92% RT all critics

95% RT top critics

8.1 IMDB on 17,000+ ratings

52% RT audience score

I'm actually surprised the NBA allowed so much access to this film considering the main plot is degenerate sports betting. But maybe Adam Sandler and Adam Silver are friends IRL?

Consensus among the cinephile community dictates that Adam Sandler sucks. He's not funny and his movies are terrible. Who actually watches this **** and says "wow, what a good movie, I actually learned something"?

Gotta be honest OP, you're in the wrong here for expecting anything besides utter trash from a Sandler movie. As to why RT is giving this movie positive reviews, I'm not sure. I've heard lots of rumours about how film studios pay off critics for positive reviews (see Marvel vs. DC movies on RT), but I'm not sure how valid they are. If you could just buy reviews, why do some of the bigger movies have an embargo?

Somebody Has to Stop Adam Sandler
Monday, November 14, 2011 by Zack “Geist Editor” Parsons (@sexyfacts4u)

Normally I wouldn’t waste my semi-precious time excoriating a has-been movie star, but Adam Sandler crossed the movie star line a long time ago. You see, Adam Sandler is really loyal to his friends. He takes care of Kevin James and Nick Swardson. He makes sure Rob Schneider can put ******* on his table and David Spade can afford the cobra venom injections in his crow’s feet. Basically all the comedians too weak to care for themselves have been placed in a zoo and fed pellets by Adam Sandler. Every year he opens the doors of the zoo so all his caged comedians can run free and maul the shiit out of the concept of humor. Fuucking cut it out, Sandler. Nobody likes you anymore. Nobody wants more of this drivel. Year after year, incessantly advertised on TV. I don’t know what hedge fund is underwriting this shiit, but it needs to be investigated by the SEC immediately. Some scheme somewhere is the only explanation for the financing of a death shiit like Bucky Larson. Throw money out windows. Shoot drugs with it. Just stop inflicting your sappy garbage on us.

Completely agree OP. Movie was trash, and I went in with high expectations due to the inflated Rotten Tomatoes ratings. One of the worst movies I have seen.

I thought it was excellent. 8/10 for me. But I completely agree with the notion that film critics are useless garbage who should not be paid any attention.

People are weird as chit. Id say your avg person cant get over some bias.

I just watched the revenant last night (whole thing), i had seen parts, and god dam* it was amazing. Ridiculously atmospheric, awesome landscape shots, and a lot of cool cinematography you dont see elsewhere.

You literally get up close and personal to a bear attack, see it very intimately. You see how much pain was caused. You understand that its way back when so they have no medicine. Dude is recovering au natural. you see his son killed right in front of his eyes as hes in the beginning of recovery and i saw soooo many 1 star reviews.

I was like reallllyyyy.. This of all movies youd give 1 star? The cinematography and epicness of that is way more deserving than 1 star. I saw people saying there was no plot. I was like did you not see how his son was killed right in front of him? Dude was also attacked by a bear and we see his recovery and then a bunch of chit happens in the midst of his recovery?

I dont understand how you could say no plot. Just ridiculous

Perhaps the movie was less about how good the movie was received by the general public and more of a cautionary tale of 2012 since that's when everything changed. This may just be one man's experience during that year.

This movie sounds like an indy showing and is in the drama genre of movies. I want to see it regardless of who thinks its dogchit.

I liked it, but I didn't expect it to be Goodfellas or Shawshank Redemption.

It was supposed to be a 2 hour anxiety attack, which it was. My bar is low these days, but it was nice to see a creative mainstream movie instead of the endless heap of chit comic book and remake trash.

Did you see Good Time from the same directors/studio? Exact same concept, exact same formula, but better executed. Couldn't believe they followed up something creative with something that was so incredibly similar. Disappointing

Yeah liked Good Time better and Uncut Gems was obviously the big budget version. I liked Heaven Knows What, too.
