Successful miscers over 30... getting harder to buy a "flashy" car?

Growing up I've always wanted a nice car, a G-wagon, a nice Range Rover, something like that.

Now that I'm at the age where I can pretty easily afford one, I just... I can't. I feel like I'd be judged a little too much driving one, like the rich suburb type or trying to be TOO flashy.

Which sucks, because years ago I would have happily bought one, but now I'd feel like a little bit of a douche driving one.

Have any of you gone through this, is it in my head? Is it still cool to drive one of those things or does it actually look like you're trying too hard? I don't ever want to go the route of a basic SUV, I want some class and luxury but.. I can't get myself to consider a nice Range anymore. Thoughts?

I have a v12 AMG I bought at 23 I do sometimes feel like a douche but it’s fun to drive although maintenance is a bitch ($1/mile) srs

I’ll probably sell it soonish to recoup some cash and used car prices are ++++ rn

I could afford a nicer car but frankly I don’t care about cars. They don’t give me joy. I view cars as consumption items, not assets.

I drive a base model Nissan Versa. It’s a few years old and it’s a total cuckmobile. I will upgrade in a year or two to another slightly newer used car.

1. Do whatever makes you happy, if you can afford it, buy it without thinking about what otherwise will think
2. Your instinctual impulse that buying a flashy car post-30 years old isn't something to bemoan, it's called being mature

For me its not a question of being able to afford it. Its a question of, is it worth it to me?

I subscribe to the cash-based debt free approach. Would I love a G Wagon? Yes. Can I buy a G Wagon for cash? Yes. Is it worth spending that amount of cash just to own/drive a G Wagon? Nope.

I know people who talk like this. And they almost always, uniformly, can't afford anything better. It comes off as a massive cope. Especially because the topic typically comes up when someone is around with something nice/new.

You say cars don't give you joy. But have you ever driven a fast or high end car?

Not everyone wants to drive a car and Porsche SUVs are rough.

Range rover is not on class of g wagon though. There are clearly a few levels between them.

Girls will flock much faster a g wagon then they would your m5 or porsche.

not even sure what car would qualify as flashy any more. I remember at school one kids father had a 'rarri, it was a big thing..now, pretty much every middle class scrub has a prestige marque..I know a pt with a newish gt4..

Not much will turn heads anymore. Every street has at least an Aston or Maserati

Moderation, lad. Get yourself a nice C-Class (or whichever brand you like the best)/luxury SUV and call it a day. Enough to mog the poors/feel like you're enjoying your life and not being financially irresponsible by buying a depreciating asset. I'd like to get a C43 AMG someday. If I have fk you money, I'd love to get a Porsche, but a C43 AMG is the right mix between fun, good-looking car, and financially responsible.

nobody is going to be in awe at you driving a Ranger Rover. You see them everywhere if you are in a decent/nice area.

Yeah if you're driving a lambo or something everyone will look

If there's one thing I'll spend my money on it's cars.

I'm actually picking up my new 2021 MB G Wagon G63 this Wednesday.

But it all depends on the person. I know people who make millions and drive a F150 or a 5 series.
