just lmao if youre not chessmaxing.
anyway, seems reasonable srs. are any of these grandmasters fat? most of them are pretty in ok shape from what i remember. outside of older aged brahs. + it's not like they're gonna be losing that everyday. tournament pressure, long hours, higher concentration, stimmies as others have said.

I believe it. They probably have higher gamma/theta wave activity in the brain which is known to increase heat output, meaning it's burning calories at an accelerated rate
It's also proven the brain is the organ that consumes the most energy relative to its size

imagine not being on the OMAD diet and playing 4D intergalactic chess with at least a 150 IQ for sufficient calorie burning

I don't buy it son. So you're telling me they're eating as much as a 250lb bodybuilder. Yeah, nah...

It's terrific, right? So you know, I am in heaven."

The human brain accounts for something like 25% of the total "energy" used in the human body as a BASELINE (it's an absolutely massive proportion given its size in proportion to the rest of the body - it's literally what makes humans smart). This isn't out of the realm of possibility as a Grandmaster match lasts hours and the amount of calculations they are performing over the course of that period is beyond anything anyone here is ever going to reach. 6,000 calories a day is extreme and that's likely an outlier, but it's going to be a extremely high amount in a match that burns for a long time. Some of you seem to fail to understand that the brain is an organ just like the muscles are - it burns calories, and in fact, its considerably more of an "energy hog" than muscles or the cardiovascular system is.
This has actually been OBSERVED in real life. Kasparov and Karpov once played a 50+ game match that lasted over several months - they had to call it IIRC because both guys were deteriorating physically, and Karpov supposedly lost 22 pounds (and he was pretty frail to begin with).

Best workout to get shredded on a summer cut
Pawn - 2 sets at 50% 1rm (warmup)
Rook - 3 sets to failure
Knight - 5x5 superset with Bishop
Queen - Hold for 45sec, move diagonally, hold for another 45 sec
Finish off with a 10 minute yahtzee cooldown

This was sponsored by Polar or whatever, the heart rate monitor people.
They probably took heart rate readings which were accurate, then calculated calories based off of that which would then be inaccurate.
Your heart rate going up from running =/= your heart rate going up from chess stress for calories.

What part of this is unfathomable? One tournament game can last up to 6 hours or more. That is 6+ hours of constant intense mental calculation and stress which results in elevated blood pressure, oxygen intake, etc., etc. Their stress markers shoot through the roof which increases caloric utilization significantly.
"It all combines to produce an average weight loss of 2 pounds a day, or about 10-12 pounds over the course of a 10-day tournament in which each grandmaster might play five or six times. The effect can be off-putting to the players themselves, even if it's expected. Caruana, whose base weight is 135 pounds, drops to 120 to 125 pounds. "Sometimes I've weighed myself after tournaments and I've seen the scale drop below 120," he says, "and that's when I get mildly scared."

Anyone who doubts this, take your resting heart rate then go play a rapid game of chess on chess.com and try to win. Guarantee thar for most of you your heart rate will jump 20-30 BMP while sitting there.
