Lol, I literally just started watching Black Sails last week, and have binged the first 2 seasons. It was more or less the inspiration for this thread (along with my desire to play Sea of Thieves)

A lot of the chit that Captain Vane does in the series REALLY happened in real life. He really did sneak in and take over the Nassau fort and fire on ships coming in.

My understanding is the only characters on the show that aren't based on real-life people are Captain Flint and John Silver, who are both characters from the Treasure Island book. I'm not at the point yet but I'm guessing Max eventually becomes

While obviously being sadistic, Charles Vane in reality was a certified bad ass. They did a great job in that show tying in some historical events.

Ed Low is probably the cruelest pirate of all. Too bad he's only briefly shown and mentioned in black sails.

Pirates were actually proto communists. There was lot of equality and common goods while at sea. Everyone had a voice and a vote, it was forbidden to kill or steal from a comrade, the spoils were shared equally and the captain was elected via voting and so on

ah yes, the power of friendship is the real treasure, including having smell each other's piss and chit every day, zero showers, eating hard-tack, catching 20 phucking diseases, being attacked by other pirates. nothing like being tied with your bro at the bow of a ship and being nourishment for the vultures, it was all worth it for the friends made boyo

I don't feel like looking up the correct spelling but L'Ollonais was a cruel savage too.

This is one of their greatest innovations so to speak. Crews were even made up of numerous ethnicities, former slaves, etc. Can't blame them. Brb my father was a shoemaker so now I can only ever be a shoemaker. Brb royal navy passes through and the press gangs take you from your merchant ship before you even get paid so your family that you'll likely never see again will never see the money they were anxiously waiting on for survival. The speech attributed to Sam Bellamy, and the articles drawn up by Bartholomew Roberts' crew are both eye opening.

1. There are still pirates active off the costs of Asia and Africa. If that's really the life you want go ahead.

2. If you are too soft for that get a couple of friends and get a sailboat and sail around the Carribean . Document on youtube to fund your new lifestyle. Its not that expensive. Tons of people are doing it now.

3. If you are too soft to sail around the Carribean IRL you can look up youtube channels of people doing it and watch their youtube.

The sh*t we romanticize and the absolute mental gymnastics we perform to romanticize it is mind-boggling.

Same with modern day motorcycle clubs. All looks cool on the surface and in magazines - IRL it's an absolute garbage existence.

You think pirates or modern MC's were/are a bunch of hollywood chads smashing 10/10's? LOL nah.

After a whole life of dodging the authorities, fukking your fellow man, and watching your back from your own shipmates/MC brothers your reward is a slew of hangovers and ONS with 3/10s.

Absolutely pissening.

Can't believe there's so many pirate games out there - some of them crazy famous

This game keeps getting more and more popular it seems

I never EVER developed an interest in assassins creed games, but heard Black Flag had a good feel

Whereas I remember playing Sid Meier's Pirates about 10 years back

And of course the 8 trillion versions of Monkey Island that have come out

In about nine months from now, Ubisoft is releasing Skull & Bones

Blackbeard was one of my favourite actors from the show Rome, was excited affffff when I saw the reveal and it was him. The role was super underwhelming tho.

Black Sails is probably my favourite show of all time though.
