...including 50% who were seeing a mental health specialist. This is interesting considering the popular opinion is that men commit suicide at 3x the rate of women because they refuse to speak up or seek treatment. Turns out that's not true at all, and speaking to a therapist is clearly not the miracle cure that so many pretend it is.
Link to study from the UK:https://documents.manchester.ac.uk/d...px?DocID=55305
Summary:
Why did we carry out the study?
Since 2013, men aged 40-54 have had the highest suicide rate in the UK; accounting for a quarter of
all suicide deaths in 2019. The suicide rate in middle-aged men in the UK is 3 times higher than women
of the same age and 1.5 times greater than men in other age groups. This is of concern because middle-
aged men are often thought not to be in contact with health or other support services, and are more
likely to be affected by economic adversity. At times they report a reluctance to talk about or report
mental health problems, and may perceive more challenges and barriers to accessing services than
women.
We used data from official investigations, mainly coroner inquests (or police death reports in Scotland), to examine
factors associated with suicide in middle-aged men. More specifically, we aimed to:
(1) Examine the characteristics of middle-aged men who died by suicide;
(2) Determine how frequently suicide was preceded by specific events and clinical factors;
(3) Examine the role of support services;
(4) Make recommendations to strengthen suicide prevention for middle-aged men.

If you're gonna kill yourself, a stranger on a couch isn't gonna help.
The only way to prevent it is to find some breakthrough resolution to whatever it is that is causing that urge (ie. depressed over being single you find a woman, depressed over your job you find a better job, etc)

Survival. When the jungle tears itself down and builds itself into something new. Guys like you and me, we end up dead. Doesnβt really mean anything. Or, if we happen to live through it, well that doesnβt mean anything either.

truth is most people suck at their jobs and that probably includes therapists.
I imagine there are many who find meaning in their work but many probably just want to get you in and out asap to finish the day and go home. If that's the kind of person you have it probably won't do you any good.

Repped OP, the 90% seeking help is interesting, did not know.
So major factors appear to be living in poverty areas, physical and mental ill-health, financial problems, relationship stress and drug/alcohol abuse.
Sounds like having a strong social safety network (including financial support for the unemployed and genuine programs to assist them into productive employment) and free easily obtainable specialised treatment for the mentally ill (as opposed to shutting down all the asylums and bouncing these guys between the hospitals and prisons) would go a long way towards reducing suicide.

It seems to be a similar situation to the kids that seek help and then end up mutilating their genitals, as if the therapists are there to support/push any ideas that get brought up

15% of therapists are potatoes and probably hurt more than they help
15% are genuinely great at their job and probably save many lives over the course of their career
The rest are just ok and may or may not help depending on the day of the week

It's usually pretty obvious when someone is about to kill themself. It's just that no one cares about men. Especially depressed men.

Quality thread discussing a serious topic. I also like how it disassembles the narrative that it's some ego thing and that if they simply dropped their ego and sought help, it would be equal to women rates. This actually suggests that men simply aren't as supported in society and have less resources dedicated to helping them - but again, that doesn't fit the left leaning narrative.
Glad you posted this, and correct me if I didn't interpret this right.

I lost my brother to suicide last year. He was 38. It was a gigantic shock, but at the same time, there were signs in the past. He is one of these statistics. But I know him and all the **** that happened within his lifetime that contributed to it. Most of these other statistics probably had their own stories too.

The world isn't geared towards middle-aged people anymore. Just another example of the erosion of the middle class and the results of that. At least when the middle class had money/power, you could buy your way into the comforts of life and live a semi decent life.

some people arent emotionally,mentally or psychologically strong

I bet the attempt rate is about the same male to female. Or even higher female.
Males just end up being successful / its not a attention thing with males.
Cliffs
Males and females probably are equally depressed but males are more successful, even in suicide
