Everything that existed already existed without God, Jesus or any of your fairytale characters for thousands of years before some smart kunt rewrote Ancient Greek and Egyptian mythology into a dumbed down book for people like you. Answer me why the Greeks believed Zeus was God and created Perseus to be a demi-god on Earth. Sure sounds like a similar story there bud.
The Bible is just copyright infringement of another fairytale. Bestseller book of its generation akin to if Harry Potter was worshipped as God in today's day and age.

Odd. Seems reasonable actually.
Curious what these “facts” are.
Science is fundamentally different than religion, in that its findings are based on observation and the scientific method rather than just stated in some religious text without evidence, it is not a religion. The term religion does not have a precise definition, but is generally connected to worship of some kind of supernatural deity(ies), or spirits, things of that nature- this is not what science is.
The moral code you seem to be referencing in the Bible did not arise in vacuum. The ethical dictums in the NT had their predecessors and things like you shouldn’t steal or murder had basis in secular society before. The Bible reflects the moral view of the culture in the time period it was written, with many absolute head-scratchers looking back at it 2000-2500 years later, such as how slaves or women are treated etc. Even the existence of slaves itself was not explicitly addressed by figures like Jesus.
I find it somewhat strange and scary tbh that words in a text are the only thing holding someone back from stealing or murdering. You’d be out doing them if they weren’t in the text? Hopefully not. Nah...there is something else going on here besides just words written in a text.

And religion is part of the evolutionary process, which is why it’s always changing. The stories we tell ourselves and resonate with us is always changing. Just as walking with 2 legs resonated with us more because it ensured a higher chance of survival.
You are not good because of some text on a book that scares you. You are good because it’s what is expected from you from society. A society is made up of people. Where do those people get their values from? It’s definitely not from science. It’s from stories.
It’s no more different to how traditional women wanted to be housewives and princesses. It was the story told to them at the time, Disney movies was part of that culture. Now they want to be independent and feminist stories have been told to them. You even see that seep into society with movies like frozen adapting to that culture.
A man striving to be more and conquering his fears, stories were told in different variations of a man fighting a dragon and going through the hero’s journey. Otherwise without these stories, we’re LDAR.
Perhaps the most influential set of stories has been religious text, whether that’s Buddhism, Hindu, pagans, Christianity etc. Whatever stories they told, society reflected those values. If those were the primary set of stories ingrained in society, all other stories including Disney movies stem from that. You will see a lot of similar messages in Pinocchio for example as what is preached in religious text.
My point is, you cannot have a UNIVERSAL moral value system without stories, science doesn’t tell stories, it doesn’t tell you how to be bad or good, it just tells you what is. The stories are something everyone reads which is why it becomes universal. Without those stories, each person will decide what is good for themselves and you will see a clash of values.
Now we are coming to a place where those stories have ended. We see that. Casual sex is ok. Gays, trans etc is ok. Degeneracy is ok. Murder is still not ok because nobody wants that.
But we’re 10 years into the experiment. Come back to me in a hundred years. The stories we tell each other today is still largely influenced by the stories propagated by the bible and previous religion to that. A person born 100 years from now completely divorced from these stories will have a very different POV of the world.
Why is it ok to kill an animal but not a human? Under science, we’re all animals? Religion kinda explains that, some religions says some animals are ok and some aren’t, weird rule but followed nonetheless, even non-practising Muslims in Muslim countries don’t eat pork. That’s the influence of stories on societies.
So can we envision a world we’re value systems have become so that men and animals are equal? Why not I guess…
As for the bible not having monopoly on moral values, no chit, bible is just an evolved version of the previous set of stories. Imagine:
- 1st story ever told, kill anyone to survive
- 2nd story, kill enemies only
- 3rd story, kill animals but maybe avoid killing humans..
The stories keep evolving, none of the religious text existed in a vacuum, they were all influenced by something. Which is why I mentioned that no society ever has existed without religion for a significant period of time. They believed in something at the time whether it was Jews, Odin, Osiris, some witch kings etc. And each set of stories created a completely different culture with completely different universal moral value systems.
What people are proposing now is the complete absence of religion. It has never been done. We know what bad or good religion can do. We don’t know what no religion can do.
I suspect utter nihilistic purposeless society.
“God is dead” and the result is catastrophic. Nietzsche wrote about it in-depth. Worth reading into his work to get his perspective.

And because the stories that we tell each other is part of our evolutionary process, this is less of an arbitrary/accidental thing than you think. The stories that emerged and succeeded are the stories that were required at the time, or else they wouldn’t have become so prominent in society.

This story resonated with us because life was full of suffering, specially 2000 years ago, and we needed a way to deal with that amount of suffering psychologically and soldier on. I suspect that Christianity wouldn’t have taken off if the biggest problem we had back then was 70 cents to a dollar for non-equal work pay. But even today, you see people want to turn to something in times of absolute suffering, say in losing a child.
I see religion and the idea of God much like our parents. Which is apt since we refer to God, father.
It is something that we look up to, a role model, an ideal. And you will find, certain cultures with absent fathers lacking in guidance. Now the effects are less pronounced because we are governed by a society where the other people had parents. But imagine complete absence of parents.
So right now in the US, you take all the children and you take away their parents, so they have no role models. They will probably turn out less than great. But they are not living completely without parents, their teachers, the police, the politicians, the grownups, all had parents and they’re pushing their beliefs into society, so in effect, even these children with no parents are being parented by the belief system surrounding them.
Now 50 years later, the next generation is born from their completely parentless parents. And they too have no parents as they are taken away. So now it gets more serious, there is even less influence from the previous, previous generations of how we should live our life. I believe that the 3rd generation would be devoid of any morality that we believe in today. There’s no reason for them to have it.
And that is the effect of religion. All these atheists are living under massive religious influence and don’t even know it.
The idea that “we are all created equal” is a direct moral principle derived from the bible (which in turn may have taken it from somewhere else). The reason you treat the next man with respect is because he is your equal as a human, enforced by your moral standards and society. Watch that idea break down without its foundations.

No, you do not need a fictional story in order to rationalize and have societies built around what you would consider to be moral ideas and laws. The ideas of justice laid forth in the biblical myth are close to a joke in modern standards.....if we were structuring our society around much of this, you would be presumably horrified (unless you somehow think that cursing one's parents, worshiping other gods, or working on the sabbath deserves execution, to take just 3 examples of countless).

Since you seem to think that the stories which have survived in some evolutionary sense did so for good reasons, I suppose you would be thinking this of Islam, since those stories have very much survived and continue to draw a major following today. It goes without saying, the ability of myths to survive history (we commonly read about Ancient Greek myths today in school classes) has no implication regarding their truth. These are stories.
As much as you are claiming ideas like equality are found in the bible* (many would argue they are not), notice historically that Christian dominated Europe for like 1500 years after the the events of the bible was anything but equal. Look no further than Feudal medieval Christian europe for example, and the system with clear lines of inequality from the King to the nobles to the knights to the peasants/serfs. They were literally executing and burning witches in these harsh, superstitious times. Women not equal whatsoever obviously. Notice that things gradually began to change though.....rational thinking and enlightenment philosophy started to become more widespread, superseding things like superstition and dogma. Changes in popular movements, ways of thinking, government organization, etc were occurring.
You talk about atheists living under massive religious influence. I argue you are living under much more secular influence than you seem to be acknowledging (and should probably be grateful western civ today is not just under some of the barbaric influences from religion of the past).
*: you refer to "we are all created equal" as some truth from the bible, but really we have a situation of "All people are created equal, but some are more equal than others.”, to paraphrase Orwell, if we are talking about the actual content of the bible.

Honest question, have you read the bible? It was written during a time when the cultures were anything but equal, and the biblereflectsthis. For all this talk of being created equal, we see in the bible clearly laid out that women are inferior to men (existence is to serve husband, cannot speak in church, to name just two items). The bible also goes out of its way to portray the handicapped as inferior. We see passage after passage not only not condemning the inequality and widespread slavery of the time, but going out of the way to condone slavery and putting forth rules for it. No, practical equality in society had to wait many, many centuries....and the evolution of humanist ideas, rational and enlightenment thought, changing movements in society and secular govts played roles.

Again, looking at this at a surface level. The bibles underlying message is equality, we are all made equal in Gods image. That’s what makes you different from a pig.
As for Orwell’s quote, lol, that’s not a byproduct of religion. That’s a byproduct of nature, animal nature, no one is truly equal. You and I have an ego that would have ourselves be higher on that dominance hierarchy. However, the underlying message of “there is God and we are all his children” may have just been enough to reign that ego in for us to treat each other with respect as human beings, well, because all humans are gods children.
That’s the message, remove yourself from the bias of hatred against the bible or whatever and look at the psychological effect that could have.
Your argument is similar to saying that marriage is bad because it ends in divorce most of the time. Well, ye, but not the concept of it. And as for the book being outdated, of course it is, it was written 2000 years ago, it doesn’t change the fact that it had a message that guided us.
If you get rid of a religion, another will surface in religious dimensions. Today, people are getting very religious about their political beliefs for example.
The world simply cannot exist without a religion, more than likely, societal evolution will manifest its own, and if you throw the baby out with the bath water, you might usher in a disastrous set of religion. Think of the bloody genocides in the 20th century.
And the rebuttal to that is always, hurr durr religion caused wars. Nobody said religion was perfect or that it’s even suppose to have a good outcome. Religion is simply a set of stories, belief system, dogma or not, that we universally follow. The judea-Christian religion for the most part is good, specially for something written 2000 years+ ago but it doesn’t mean that people can’t bastardise it.
Blaming religion for those atrocities is akin to blaming trump for KKK members today.
As for the Muslim thing. Islam is a perfect example actually. Imagine being a person living in a desert 1300 years ago. There’s suffering, people are dying, women are raped and beaten etc. It’s pure suffering.
They tell a story, that there is heaven beyond all this suffering but in this life you have to do good. A sense of purpose. They have to marry their women, so now someone has to take care of their children.
The stories told basically guide society to thrive, and without it, it would have probably collapsed. The evidence is that no society has ever existed for a length of time that did NOT have a religion of some sort.
And if you think you’re good just because, you have too large an ego.
Honestly, why don’t you kill a man to get what you want? You’d kill a chicken? Why the chicken and not man? What is so “secular” about that?
Why do good? What is good? Who told you it was good and why did they say it is good?
You seem to think religion is specifically about the magical stories of witches or going to church and whatnot, rather than psychological effect it has on people which underpins society.
Western civilisation is only secular in practice. The psychological foundation of it is still very religious, based on judea-Christian ideals. That will wear off over the next 50 years.
You see this in real life too. You meet a Christian Mexican woman, extremely religious, very indoctrinated. She taught her daughter and and her daughter grew up hearing all the Christian ideals. Daughter has a Very conservative views on sex, marriage etc. But she doesn’t pray every day nor even go to church. Her daughter, the granddaughter Millennial is even less religious but she has also grown up with somewhat Christian values, still has casual sex but hasn’t quite degenmax.
Now the tiktoker genz meanwhile seems completely washed from all that, didnt get any religious lectures as a kid. However, still largely influenced by society which in itself was influenced by religion.
You can write off religious practices into law overnight and you can even ban it’s practice overnight too. The psychological effects won’t be felt for decades at least and societies won’t feel it for centuries.
Rome didn’t fall in a day when it was clearly already at its end, took 300+ years.
