Whats the best martial art?
I wanted to train Kung Fu at the age of 16 when I was obsessed with Bruce Lee, but that idea just ran out in the sand
but as a 6.3ft tall guy who is socially anxoious and have a hard time holding eyecontact I feel like I should take up some kind of fighting sport (most likeley martial art) just to carry myself differently
whats your favorite martial art?

It's really down to you and what your interests are
I'd say try BJJ, wrestling, boxing, and muay thai and see which you prefer
BJJ is the most sustainable to do in the long-run. The others may be easier to fall off in because they're more brutal (unless you're doing private lessons and not sparring) and there's no ranking system
Bjj you can train technique and spar people until you're 90

I train boxing the most seriously, but in reality, I think MMA is probably the most applicable to "real world" fights because it combines striking and grappling and whatever other style you want. The gym I go to has everything and once in a while I force myself to do jits or Greco-Roman wrestling even though I really don't like them that much.
It sound like you're just looking to build general confidence though (that was my goal at the beginning too) so go try a couple different sports out and see which one you like best. You're a man, one of them will awaken a fundamental urge inside of you to kill another man. At the end of the day, it's just fun as phuck. “There is nothing more exhilarating than to be shot at with no result.” - Winston Churchill.
The only thing I find western martial arts to lack is the built-in discipline and humility that is found in eastern martial arts.

Anyhow, if we're talking about strictly self defense - imo Boxing and Judo (legit Judo with plenty of randori, not McDojo/watered down Judo) is the best combo.

And then the military kind of makes you adopt that hyper-accountability mindset to a fault but eastern martial arts are way more holistic than western ones.

If we're talking about self-defense, Boxing + Wrestling is def the best. You can also train BJJ but don't waste your time with training in gi, stick to no-gi BJJ.
Some ***gits love to argue u don't need to learn grappling because u never wanna go to the ground when you are out, but wtf are u gonna do when your opponent knows grappling and you don't? lul

There are a ton of ultra dedicated boxers who every now and again try out grappling and you can literally just shoot in on them and use them as a human marionette. Boxing is padded with specific rules. Wrestling and Jiu Jitsu (which at any good gym you will always learn BOTH) are the king. Muay Thai is the king of striking

You always want to keep street/bar fights off the ground, because that's when chit can get ugly for you real fast even if you're winning. Huge risk of a dude's buddies, or even random outsiders going full-retard jumping in to head stomp you and chit.
So I say boxing is better in terms of self-defense in a practical sense. Gives you a chance at dealing with multiple attackere, could buy you enough time to bail without letting a fight go to the ground and taking on the risks associated with such, etc. Of course, having at least some sort of background in grappling would also be good. But if you have to pick one, I would say boxing.
Also, I always lol ant guys who rail on about BJJ/etc. gym stories who rail on about how they see boxers get wrecked in one on one gym matches with grappling focused rules against someone who specializes in grappling like BJJ/wrestling. Wow, how convincing. Because it's not like the average grappler would get wrecked in a boxing match against an average boxer, right? It's like saying NBA players are more athletic than NFL players on average because almost any NFL guy would get schooled by an NBA player in a pickup game of basketball.

A single well-placed knee would absolutely destroy a badly timed takedown.
Street fights are hard to calibrate though because there are so many other factors besides just raw skill.

The single best proven training is actually judo. Second would be Muay Thai
BJJ is 75% ground work and about 25% standing. Not what you want for defense. Judo is the reverse; 75% standing and 25% ground work. Both create an advantage over size differences. Throwing someone on to hard surfaces can wreck someone pretty badly, and learning balance, footing, etc helps you stay on your feet. Judo is also better suited for multiple opponents because staying on your feet keeps you ready. Lastly, you don’t want to be deliberately rolling around if you are carrying a firearm.
Muay Thai helps you protect yourself from incoming strikes, teaches counter striking and balance. It compliments any throwing/grappling techniques.
On a final note, keep in mind these do not take weapons in to consideration. Most fighting techniques do not. In this case, an actual self defense MMA type of training is best. It combines all of these elements. For instance, this is what soldiers and police officers would be trained in. In fact, Japanese police are first taught and become proficient in Judo then move on to more combat style training. The US military has been traditionally trained in judo as well, but they usually create a complete system revolving around judo fundamentals

If I had to train in one thing, I'd choose catch wrestling. So few know what that is anymore and even fewer know how to teach it.

Sprawling and other wrestling techniques aside, there are plenty of ways to counter the takedown outside of a sanctioned fight.
BRB bottle across the face. This is a street fight. I am literally going to do whatever I have to in order to not end up getting stomped out by your crew.

I'm not trying to say grapplers > strikers or anything. Like I said earlier, I think it's a good idea to learn both boxing & wrestling if you are learning martial arts for self defense.
