no **** .... that's how you become a tradesman ... you apprentice idiot.... I still do the electrical work that a journeyman does ****tard I just dont have enough hours to test for my license or is that concept too hard for you to comprehend ?

what is there to retort to ? all im reading is cultish anti union bull****

no one is forced to be a union contractor , you can either sign up to be a signatory and hire from the hall or not

its pretty simple bro

quality, skilled and well trained labor isn't cheap but companies dont want to pay a good wage for most actual careers

nothing quality in life is cheap

if non union shops are too greedy to pay a good wage thats their business , most I know are doing terrible because most workers leave to start their own or leave for a pathetic pay increase

employers are gonna take advantage of a 100% free market

its not about how skilled or productive you are , its about paying you as little as possible and maximizing profits

these big contractors rake in hundreds of billions , almost trillions of dollars in revenue

dont tell me they couldn't afford to pay good journeyman 50/$hr instead 30/$ hr , they can just dont want to

why do all my non union buddies make about the same if you're supposed to make more as a better worker ?

if unions drive wages down then why does everyone want to go that route when it comes learning a trade ?

why do all the top dollar govt and public works projects get won by union companies ? They dont have to hire union contractors for those jobs but they do

keep bootlicking and shilling for corporations with your cult mindset

eventually electricity , plumbing , and HVAC will be a commodity instead of an inhabitable standard because of people like you

no ones gonna work for table scraps to do all these multi billion dollar building contracts

the rat ****s will just cry though " oh , where are all the good electricians ? I can't find any quality people. I offer a very competitive wage for the Bay Area , 35/$hr " lmao

only methheads and tweakers will work for that little , no **** you cant find good people

Nah, unions are exploitive and corrupt. They don’t negotiate anything but the premium they charge to collect as fees. Fat bureaucrats at their finest.

It’s a much more compelling argument to me because it strays from demonizing business owners or low skilled workers, and leaves the emotions out of the equation.
That’s the argument I’ve been making in this entire thread.

Reality- Min wage laws increase poverty.

People based their conclusions on a abstract fantasy of what they believe is the truth. It’s not founded on any facts, only what they THINK happens, instead of finding out what ACTUALLY happens. Her entire economic belief system is an abstraction. Srs

Pretty cool concept
Except that doesn't work while having an open border with a 3rd world country coupled with politicians wanting to allow nearly unlimited high skilled immigration while subsidizing multi billion dollar corporations with the promise of green cards(hundreds of millions would work for free to obtain one)

That said, I don't disagree in theory, but we don't live in that reality. Its just outdated nonsensical thinking and more importantly eliminates any party running on that platform from ever winning elections.

But yeah, if one wants full blown communism to prevail, then by all means run on that platform.

PS.. less than 2% of workers make fed min wage and over half are under 25, so the fed minimal at least, is actually a non issue.

The only solution is downsizing the central government, and at this point, there is only one way to do that…Once life gets difficult enough, it will happen, but not without enough suffering that individuals are willing to make the sacrifice. When Jesus asks people to follow him, he tells them they must be willing to leave everything behind. There is deep meaning in that. Many times, in order to make the best and moral decisions, we must not let anything hold us back, especially our material things.

Bold:

Pick one:

1) down size govt

2) run on a platform promoting employers paying their employees 2 bucks an hour and if employees don't like it quit(obviously much more nuanced that that, but that narrative and argument will be buried by the media)

Now sit back and watch how big that Govt grows after the communists win..

Your economic awareness is about 0. You’re looking at everything on the surface without understanding the entire picture.

Cost of living is lower in America than Australia. Aussies get paid more because they are taxed more, and, higher pay means the government can tax more of your earnings. After all, the gubment needs a ton of money to rip people off with its extremely high cost of function.

Think about all the profit they’ll rake in from paying the equivalent of 50c/hr

It will easily be in the trillions
I've done lots of projects all over latin america. As you say, in countries where theres not a strong union movement tradies are basically serf slaves that camp on the sites and endure life threatening work environments all the time. I 100% support unions and every country and every worker should endorse them. People who look down on unions because of "muh socialism" are just retarded and shooting themselves in the foot even if you're not in the trades yourself you're going to be dealing with unskilled and unsafe labourers at any point in your life and suffer the consequences of said piss poor conditions somehow.

Don't bother arguing with Kraken his a deranged liberturd shill who faps at the thought of milton friedman banging his wife like the massive cuck he is. It's like arguing to a smug 15 year old that never grew past the retarded libertarian phase.

You failed to bold the rest of my thought, taking it out of context.

My “platform” is one in the same. Libertarianism. Free market and no central government at all. Central government is a failed experiment and our forefathers should have fought against the federalists for even suggesting it. The original Libertarians were right; the central government will always grow out of control and become corrupt.

The real problem is government, and peoples entitlement. People feel they need to live in their own place, have kids, cell phones, new cars, dinner outings, flat screens, designer cloths etc etc. Everyone wants to live the instthot lifestyle but put in little effort

Workers need to take it upon themselves to increase their value.

All of those desires are implanted by capitalism and projected as aspirations for the workers to keep them in a perpetual cycle of debt, servitude and so on.

I definitely think the minimum wage should be at least $15 an hour where I live in a very expensive area in California.

Heck even at $15 hour many are living out of their cars and struggling. Now, no one is FORCING them to live in this area. They could move out to central California and probably be able to afford a home. Of course the weather is hot and crappy.

I think in this area unless you work in tech you can't afford to live here.

I can't really speak for the rest of the country. I think the wages should be adjusted regionally.

Just like taxes should be adjusted regionally. We make over $300-$350K a year so our household is taxed close to the top 5%, but honestly we are middle class for our area. Many people are making $400-$500K + with stocks and bonuses.

The taxes we have to pay just drive me crazy. I'm so glad I'm not paying for national child care and college, as I had to pay for that myself and I don't want to pay for others to get it. It's not a right, it's a privilege.

So, adjust it regionally based on the income levels in the area. There's no need for a federal minimum wage.

Facts, not even once. All ideological nonsense. Your God, Karl Marx, was a parasite that, up until the age of 35, lived off his mother's teat. He graduated from a college that was the equivalent of getting a degree from a cracker jack box, and had no idea how to function in the real world, but yet, here you are, advocating for a loser's ideals. It's no wonder why so many losers go for his rhetoric; they all view the world from the same "Loser's lenses", without any experience or knowledge of reality at all.

Yes it does work actually. Illegal immigrant cheap labor is the only thing keeping California from collapsing. Imagine how expensive homes and rent would get without exploiting them. The problem is social program entitlements and public goods which illegals benefit from without doing anything, so another issue with government. Brb food stamps, brb high school, brb electricity and roads, etc..

The percentage of min wage workers doesn't matter because we don't know what real employment is. Teenage employment is for sure nonexistent compared to decades ago though.

Communism is a horrible way to run one's economy. It just leads to people being stuck in poverty with no way out. At least I know if I get an education and work hard I can improve my socioeconomic class in the US.

Props to you for going vegan though. I respect vegans. I'm 95% vegan.

Agreed, minimum wage is supposed to be for teenagers. And if you're a teen making minimum wage and you're not out of that pay bracket in like a year, you need to start re-evaluating your life choices.

Also, why not just tie the number to inflation though?

I didn't read the whole thread but I was in franchising Dairy Queens for a long time. You cannot arbitarily assign a monetary value to a given job, especially if you are operating in a volume based business. Cost of goods and labor are two costs that a business owner has a fair bit of control over.

If you force someone to pay a teenager $15hr to put ice cream on a cone you drive costs up abd the purchasing power of say, someone already earning $16-20hr goes down. Yes, we created markets but market forces have a life of their own and we cannot just wave our hands and tada, the value of dropping fries is magically $15hr.

Also, to be fair, there is a huge demand for late night and even 24hr access and service. Adults have to fill these positions so it is misleading to say all of these minimum wage positions are intended for teenagers.

I avoided hiring anyone 15yrs old, and between 15 and 18 were still a pain in the ass to employ because of child labor laws. Can't have them working x amounts of hrs in a day, x amount of days in a week, strict scheduling of breaks, can't work passed 10pm on a school day, etc
.

Young adults were a much more preferable employee.
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

I linked an article with specific examples of increases in the US minimum wage which did not create higher inflation and also a recent article about the failure of "wage push" inflation to appear in our current circumstance.

At no point in this conversation have I advocated for "putting the power all in the hands of labor".

What I have said is that labor should be allowed to use the exact same weapons as capital and government use. You are the one who seems to believe arming labor to fight for their own interests against capital and government is the equivalent of Marxism.

I also haven't said anything about "using government to fix all of the economic issues". IMO government should be acting as a referee to maintain a fair state of play and should represent human interests that are unrelated to profit seeking.

Making it illegal to pay less than a given amount does not make a worker’s productivity worth that amount—and, if it is not, that worker is unlikely to be employed.”

— Thomas Sowell

It’s a much more compelling argument to me because it strays from demonizing business owners or low skilled workers, and leaves the emotions out of the equation.
I like Thomas Sowell. Serious.

But I don't believe that the possibility of reduced total employment is a compelling enough reason to keep wages for all workers anchored by a minimum wage that isn't adjusting with inflation.

The CBO analyzed the effect of increasing the minimum wage to estimate job loss and poverty. They did find some job loss would occur, but they also found that a lot of poverty would be alleviated. This was done in 2019 so the exact calculation have probably changed. Still the poverty reduction looks like a fair trade off to me.

https://www.cbo.gov/system/files/201...umWage2019.pdf
• In an average week in 2025, the $15 option would boost the wages of 17 million workers who would otherwise earn less than $15 per hour. Another 10 million workers otherwise earning slightly more than $15 per hour might see their wages rise as well. But 1.3 million other workers would become jobless, according to CBO’s median estimate. There is a two thirds chance that the change in employment would be between about zero and a decrease of 3.7 million workers. The number of people with annual income below the poverty threshold in 2025 would fall by 1.3 million.

• The $12 option would have smaller effects. In an average week in 2025, it would increase wages for 5 million workers who would otherwise earn less than $12 per hour. Another 6 million workers otherwise earning slightly more than $12 per hour might see their wages rise as well. But the option would cause 0.3 million other workers to be jobless. There is a two-thirds chance that the change in employment would be between about zero and a decrease of 0.8 million workers. The number of people with annual income below the poverty threshold in 2025 would fall by 0.4 million.

• The $10 option would have still smaller effects. It would raise wages for 1.5 million workers who would otherwise earn less than $10 per hour. Another 2 million workers who would otherwise earn slightly more than $10 per hour might see their wages rise as well. The option would have little effect on employment in an average week in 2025. There is a two thirds chance that the change in employment would be between about zero and a decrease of 0.1 million workers. This option would have negligible effects on the number of people in poverty.
For a minimum wage of $15 their median job loss number came in at 1.3 million BUT with 1.3 million people being lifted above the poverty threshold.

^^^
So we could have fewer people working and at the same time have fewer people receiving support from taxpayer funded government benefits.

Meanwhile some number of people who are already earning a wage near $15 could see raises and IMO over time many jobs in the broad center of the wage scale will probably see wage increases, the exceptions being jobs that can be automated or outsourced.

This is you projecting your own bias. I understand that your bias is founded in the study of economics. I would say that theory doesn't always describe reality.

Already covered ITT, but while only 2% may be paid the current minimum wage roughly a third of workers earn less than $15 per hour.

Minimum wage goes up, prices go up, unemployment goes up, percent of the population in skilled labor goes down, productivity goes down.

Frankly, it's retarded.

.
I didn't state a theory. I stated a fact.

You're basing your argument off of a single individual that benefits from a minimum wage law (the minority that keep their job). I'm basing my facts on how minimum wage laws effect an entire economy of scale, because, after all, these policies effect a large number of people, not a few individuals. You're ignoring the individuals that lose their job, which is a VERY large number of individuals. If it was a small number, then poverty would go down and unemployment would be almost unaffected. That's not the case. Poverty and unemployment both go up considerably, AND, they affect blacks disprooprtionately.

Your argument is truth by omission; ignoring the bad effects to argue the good. If you consider both the bad and good outcomes, the bad outweighs the good. This is what makes the "good intentioned" policies so bad. They do harm, but you ignore that to feel good about the decision. Economics should be about weighing the good and bad. We can use outcomes of historical events and policies to determine that. The problem is, no one wants to see the bad. They only want to look at the good, so they miss the big picture.

Hey I would rather have sound money and an end to usury too.

And I understand the desire to have a smaller government, or no federal government.

There should be no minimum wage. Let supply and demand happen naturally

If you want more money then stop working a cash register and get some actual skills
