All the people hating on golf probably either tried it once and sucked or never played since they have no one to play with. I started playing in high school with my dad and now I love it and try to play as much as I can.

I used to go to Hilton Head often and talked to regular golfers and learned a few reasons why.
1. escape for 5 hours from home
2. the courses are pretty so being out in nature
3. networking,socializing
4. women at some courses
5. slow, less taxing form of exercise from sports that require running or strength training
6. can play with injuries, dont have to be in nfl shape
7. gramps can play at 80

Its as mentally taxing as it is physically, if not more so.
You walk 18 you'll burn 1,400 calories+ and walk around 6-8 miles.
Still burn 800-1,000 riding in a golf cart and still walk 2-3 miles.

This is a common one that people play on weekends and fantasize, shop for during the off hours until they can play again. Its also a nice ice breaker for talking to strangers and acquaintances.

I think golfers enjoy being outdoors, with friends and then afterwards hanging out at hole 19. Golf wasn't a sport that I enjoyed much. I was never that good. But if I practiced more I could enjoy it I imagine.
A young guy just bought our family homes in Illinois. He worked about a 45 mile drive away from the house but he wanted our home because it was next to a top rated golf course and he loves golf. Kind of chuckled a bit as he later e-mailed us that he had just signed up to be a member at of the club house gold course. It is yearly membership. Of course in Illinois there will be no golf play till April due to the cold winter weather. He should have waited 5 months we thought before hw bought his membership. I guess he couldn't wait though. He moved from California so we wondered if he realized how cold mid-west winters can be.

It's a lot harder than it looks, imo. If you are any good at it, then playing it is satisfying.
People network and socialize, and devote time to themselves over errands and family responsibility for a few hours.
People who play golf often spend a lot of time inside in an office, so being outside is pleasant.
It can be expensive depending on where you want to play, so there can be a status element.
Longevity is pretty good with playing golf.

A skill sport but requires minimal athleticism, you can be an obese bloatlord and be good at it. People who are in some reasonable shape play tennis.
I've tried many times to like golf but it is just boring af walking around the truman show manicured hellscape with a load of old people everywhere. Maybe I'll take it up once my body can't even manage tennis doubles but not before then. Smashing down serves and trying to rip the cover off a tennis ball is so much more fun. I'm not sure wtf is wrong with people under 40 who play golf, it is the ultimate LDAR just above bowls. There is nothing satisfying about smashing a tiny little ball down a lawn.

I played on the PGA Jr Tour in the late 90's when I was a teen. Golf was extremely popular at the time, with Tiger coming to fruition lots of kids were getting involved, courses packed, retail shops on every corner, yearly video games, many likable tour players competing against each other..
I haven't played in a few years. My old golfing buddies don't seem to play much anymore. Have really fond memories but the pace of life seems to have left it behind.

Also, if there's ever a PGA event near you, I highly suggest going, they are tons of fun. There's no sporting event where you can get closer and more personable with the athletes (maybe baseball spring training compares), plus the amount of HBBs walking around will blow your mind. I try to go to the Honda Classic every year down here and just went to my first PGA Champions Tour event (the tour for 50+ year olds) which was also just as fun.

For me, I like golf because it's super fukking challenging. It's such a mental game and it's fun to try to beat your best score or bet on who wins with your buddies.
It's also nice to be outside in nature. Golf courses are massive and I enjoy the trees, animals, lakes, wind, etc.
I'm 29 so no boomer yet.
