Randy moss had the most raw athletic ability I've seen in my lifetime.

Tom Brady might be the best football player ever but it's hard to call him a great "athlete" imo. He's slow and weak. Not like he could play any other position other than QB.

I'm a little confused at the point you're making. Are you saying Gretzky was the better athlete or that Gretzky owes a lot of his accomplishments to the talented supporting cast?

Gretzky was absolutely talented, no question. But he wasn't the best athlete. I gave lemieux as an example but there were others that were more athletic than Gretzky. Where Gretzky was killer is that he was playing 3d chess while most everyone else was playing checkers. He'd know where the puck was going to be and put himself in perfect positioning to take advantage before anyone else knew what was going on.

But since this is about the best athlete, that wasn't Gretzky.

Tom Brady. Dead srs. He has the intangibles. People will say he's a system baby, but he has heart, drive, IQ, everything that really matters outside of 'being physically gifted'. I bet if he wanted to he could've been a goat athlete, but he knew being a QB was more than that

Eddy Merckx

it's one of the rare cases where there isn't even a discussion who is the all-time greatest in the sport

srs, ask anyone all over the world who the GOAT cyclist is and the answer will always be Merckx

Take your pick then out of Soccer, Basketball, Hockey, Football, Tennis, Combat Sports, and Athletics.
Ronaldo.

If we are talking about what people usually consider sports, then the only one that became legendary was Ayrton Senna (for the ones that don't know who he was... gotta check it, ded srs - wikipedia doesn't count).

But the definition os Sports is a little bit different.

Tom Brady if you factor in actual brains and skill.

Moss was insanely dominant and he barely had to try. It was no secret that he had a habit of taking plays off and didn't have the highest worth ethic, yet he still managed to go down as one of the best WRs the NFL has ever seen. If he maximized his potential, who knows what he would have accomplished.

I vote for Deion Sanders however, if we are talking about pure athletic ability, talent and accomplishments in a sport.

This thread will never work because:

Americans gonna say names like Jordan or Phelps or Brady (that will not even be mentioned outside of the US...especially Brady - 9 out of 10 persons outside of the USA never heard of her)... and they will never mention a soccer player as being the GOAT (forgetting the fact that soccer is the biggest sport ever worldwide).

I'm not saying he is the greatest athlete, I'm not sure there is ONE greatest athlete, but you have to admire Mayweather's 50-0 win loss record. In terms of being good at your sport, that is pretty incredible.

I may get chit for even mentioning his name.
