He's also claiming the missiles that sunk the moskva were controlled by the french.

Not really, I get Dutch, Scandinavian, Austrian and German a lot.
And I am not defending Putin, I am standing up for Russian people, just as anyone would for their own people. I am against this invasion, it was a mistake in my view. Unfortunately, because he's been a leader for such a long time and has brought positive change from the 90's, protecting him is kind of like protecting Russia, which is also why he has so much support domestically.
As far as I am concerned, Putin served his purpose. He brought stability to Russia from all the mess that occurred during the 90's. Before this war, it would've been ideal for him to step down and see someone more progressive take Russia forward.
In my ideal world, It would've been great to see Russia more united with the rest of Europe. With all it's resources, I would love for Russia to be an industrial powerhouse like Germany and have an open, progressive minded society like the Dutch, or the likes. It would've been amazing to see that happen after the collapse of the Soviet Union but the country was ripped apart with the help from the West, which should explain as to why domestically people have so much support for Putin. No one wants to see a repeat of the 90's.

With that being said, I am also realistic about the fact that US would never want to see united Europe with Russia. Strong Europe would not need NATO or any American influence. Just as Macron suggested, Europe needed it's own military with it's own security arrangements. Divided Europe at war would benefit US just as it did after the WW2. It's always going to be in America's interest to cause division, divide and conquer, it's 2+2 stuff.
It doesn't even matter if Putin is there, Russia will probably have a similar foreign policy. Actions speak louder than words. US always had a hostile policy towards Russia so Russia will always respond in kind. Unfortunately that's just how it is.

When talking about villages, we are comparing poverty to extreme poverty (Russian rural areas being worse off, compared to Ukraine here). I'm sure some some progress has been made in the last 20 years. I've been to a lot of former Soviet countries, and most of the villages are in better shape than those in Russia. No ones "wealthy", but most people are slowly doing better. Russia is stuck in the mud there.

I would think for the regular Russian conscript who has 9 grades of education, works the fields with his parents near the Russian-Mongolian border, something like an indoor toilet or asphalt roads in the villages, would surely be impressive. Most of Russian fighters are from rural areas, from far east and up north areas, from the middle ages to be fair.

Big news are the indications Russia is going to stop pretending this war is a 'special operation' and formally mobilise. Really bad news from an escalation perspective and the attendant dangers of nuclear warfare.

Otherwise business as usual: Russia is about 8 weeks behind schedule in eliminating resistance in Mariupol, Russia is bogged down and Ukraine is counter-attacking.

When i saw pics of eastern ukraine i was like why would anyone really care who controls this? Then i read about how zelensky no longer wanted to negotiate a settlement after we started shoving billions of dollars at him. Putin will have to find a way to present the situation to Russia as somehow not his fault, then warm them to the idea of indefinitely becoming a pariah state like North Korea.

The idea of 'Mighty Russia' is exposed as a laughingstock on the world stage. It can't be directly projected anymore and he will have to do it tacitly through some sort of false humility, propagandising stuff like 'NATO is promoting Nazism and Russia-phobia!' then deflect blame, then claim they're defending ethnic Russians wherever they may be, but not fight NATO's war and risk nuclear exchange.

Yes Sherlock, I am frauding and I lived in the river. I've never said I am Ukrainian, I said some of my family lived there, and so did I.
It was always Днепропетро́вск, Dnepr in short. It was renamed only recently to Dnipro, which is literally Dnepr just Ukrainian version. I literally finished my school there and lived there for years. Don't think I have heard a single person in my existence who called Dnepr Dnipro. Don't think I've heard anyone speak Ukrainian in school or anywhere in the city for as long as I lived there, the city is predominately Russian speaking. I have never so much as been exposed to anything anti-Russian ever, never even knew such thing existed. From what I've heard, it's always been in the far west of the country where all the peasants lived. Everyone always made fun of Ukrainians and these who spoke the language. It was like the simple folk, it sounded very primitive compared to the Russian language. I studied it in school, it was a headache, It was just butchered Russian.
How could it be better? When I was a kid Ukraine was a lot poorer than Russia, in every statistic. Russia has managed to climb out of the hole it was in the 90s and early 2000s. It's not Switzerland by any means but due to it's exports, it has managed to build wealth and higher standards of living, continues growth for more than a decade. Ukraine has lost so much population due to poverty and decreased standards of living. How could Ukraine have a ''slightly'' better life now? It statistically makes no sense. Life in Ukraine gotten a lot worse. My family still has relatives living in Kremenchug and they are struggling while my other side living in St. Petersburg are not doing poorly at all. In fact they have not experienced worsening conditions even now, while my other side in Kremenchug can't even leave their home because looters are breaking into every house, it's absolute chaos. It was chaos even before the invasion. How could an average folk in Ukraine be better off than one in Russia?
Well, the statistics and figures do not match with what you say and definitely not with reality. How can Ukraine, one of the poorest nations in Europe be doing better than Russia when Russia has been experiencing a lot of growth since 2000 compared to Ukraine which has seen nothing but decline. An average person, rural or not is a lot poorer in Ukraine. A rare example you are providing is hardly a fair comparison considering you are comparing a village in Europe, in a more developed part of the world with a lot of infrastructure around it and access to other markets to a village near Mongolia, in the middle of literally nowhere. Try comparing villages in the European side of Russia around Moscow or St. Petersburg.

Ukraines military right now consists of untrained conscripts that are nearly broken physically/mentally. Weapons and technology are cool and all but that only goes so far.
