Fitness dude I follow on IG who is from the UK traveled to the US and visited multiple major cities.

He's got well over 1M IG followers, sponsored by tons of companies, sells programs, has his own fitness app, etc. Probably makes a few hundred thousand a year.

In the UK (not even London) he rents a small townhouse that appears to be 3 bed 2 bath and is cramped.

When he came to America he was enamored by the rental vehicle... a Dodge Challenger RT. It had a V8 and he was obsessed with it. His car back in the UK was an electric Volvo that probably costs almost double what this cheap $35k Chellenger RT costs, but treated this thing like it was a Ferrari. Is it that hard to get a performance vehicle there?

Every grocery store they went in to he was blown away by the selection and quality of so much variety.

Same with restaurants.

Commented on how a non luxury normal hotel had tons of amenities.

America is all about consumerism, so it shouldn't be surprising... but standard of living just seems higher here.

Like, let's say you make $200k a year in Western Europe. In a suburb of a major city around 30 miles out. Can you easily get a 4 bed 3 bath house with a pool and hottub on half an acre of land with all new appliances and updated everything? Plus a couple really nice cars? And easily afford it on said $200k salary?

Kinda seems like that situation in Europe gets you a cramped townhouse and a pathetic fuel efficient car.
I honestly don't know though.

Both places have their pros and cons... but I still contend that if you want to work hard for a good life, there's no better place than USA.

America has got the cheap performance vehicles down for sure. In Europe performance vehicles start from like 50k for the cheapest AMGs and BMW M, Supras, ... Enjoying cars is one of the things that has been made more difficult for the average Joe in Europe and it's a thing that is starting to become more and more contested. The focus for company cars for example is always on the newest tech, electricity now of course. Because that gives tax breaks.

Dunno where he shopped but Europe also has a great selection. What they don't have as often are megastores. They pop up more and more outside of the historical cities but it's not the norm.

Restaurant selection in Europe is top notch as well.

The focus is simply different in certain areas. But it's not true that you'd have to live cramped in Europe on a 200k salary. Only in the most expensive cities you'd have to compromise, same as it would be living in NY. London, Rome, Amsterdam, Brussels are all very expensive for example. I'd say things are very similar. The more succesful you are, the more appealing the US will be. But if you're having a lot of setbacks, most European countries will provide better shielding.

If you live in either you should count yourself lucky anyway.

Food quality is definitely better in the EU. But yes I'm sure there's more choice in the US, not sure having 50 variants of the same thing is actually good though.
