Aging forum + excessive trolls/weirdos making tons of spam accounts + now the forum is private so there are pretty much no new accounts able to be made.

nah, there's lots to it.
google algorithm changes (changing how forums rank in google)
retail giants like amazon selling supplements
social media prevalence (a lot of bb'ers just show off and they can do it on insta. plus there's money to be made)

You had to get on the phone and call each individual website. After, the internet was formed and you no longer had to do that.
Message boards have been part of the internet since before there was one.
I have seen the evolution of many message boards from ones about general topics, Star Trek, all kinds of topics, and ALL POPULAR FORUMS DIE THE SAME WAY.
1. A good forum attracts smart people who want to talk about the subject and more.
2. The owner of the forum doesn't care and is enjoying the posters.
3. Since the forum is good, smart people want to talk about other things. So, they will complain about subjects, they will ask race questions, ask about jews, sex, mental problems, etc.
4. Many posters will not like "impolite speech" much like people complained about Trump. Bourgeois type people HATE plain speech and honestly.
5. Due to the honest "real talk" on the forum, the forum becomes very popular.
6. The forum owner thinks it's popular because of the subject of the forum. For instance, Bodybuilding.com owners likely thought "bodybuilding" was very popular and that's why the site had great traffic numbers!! But, it was due to the honest talk about "taboo" topics.
7. The greedy forum owner then wants the people with the "nasty talk" off the forum! So, they get crazy with moderation and then ban all the people who actually bring traffic to the site.
8. The forum then becomes unpopular and "business" the greedy owned planned on with the forum fails.
9. The forum hangs on with a few casual posters trying to keep what used to be going.
10. Forum and website get deleted.
Forums are for intellectuals and need to be run by intellectuals. You cannot have a petty "bourgeois" person with a "grandma and a tea party" mentality running a forum. If you have them as an owner/mod they will destroy free speech and shut down ideas just like middle class women do in community life.
Such people will destroy what they set out to create because they do not have the intellectual capacity to understand what and why free speech exists and the beneficial nature of encouraging all ideas.

Quality posters getting perma banned while trolls and other clowns never do. Here is a fact. If Zyzz was alive today, he wouldn't be on here because he would have been banned by some egotistical moderator that may not have agreed with him.

Web 2.0, social media, bb forums is no longer king on the search results I remember before even lurking the top results for searches were always misc posts, mod overreach, when the early incels before they were incels had their forums destroyed they brought their doomer bull**** to all of the other male dominated internet communities so suddenly you had a bunch of -cel phaqqotry drowning out the original bros having banter culture
Can't discipline the Miscipline

Politics killed it.
Miscer's started obsessing about right, left, skin color. The only thing that gets most miscer's dick twitching nowadays is race and political related threads.
Also memes of "foreveralone" turned into real life and the incel/depression pandemic took over and now you have guys like EOD who troll about depression and constantly make chitty threads crying about how they cant relate to people.
With proper forum features and a more robust mod team they could cut off thread creation privilege's for known trolls

TheAlderian makes good points.
Also google removed the forum option from their search engine. That couldn't have helped. The Fukin kunts.
But mainly it was people growing up and moving on, leaving mostly socially awkward -cels (aka zoomers) behind.
