Lets say you are part of the US military and manage to capture a group chinese infantry men, they surrender after killing a few of your friends from the battalion.

Is castrating them fair? Why or why not?

I think its fair.

If people go to war with your people and want to genocide you then what is more demoralizing than knowing if you attack you might get castrated?

War is life and death, there are no "niceties". If someone wants to take your life in war then it's anything goes.

Perhaps if more people were castrated during war then mankind would not be so gung-ho about killing each other.

Barbarism has always been around. Check out some of the medieval torture devices they used to use. Even recently you had ISIS plying captees with drugs, covering in petrol and setting fire to them in cages. Can't think of any worse way to go out than that.

Seems to me to work counterintuitive game theory wise. If the enemy knows you’ll castrate them / execute them anyway, they will never surrender and put up a fight till their last breath. You want to demoralize them but also want them to surrender easily. Should post propaganda vids out of treating them fairly and in good health, after the vid obv execute them, but make it seem to the outside world you are treating them nicely.

The British and German empire in the 1st half of the 20th century had a gentlemen code of conduct towards each other's soldiers, but all you need is a few to ruin it for the rest

On the Eastern front in WW2 it was the units (alot of them criminals and conscripts from other countries) that followed the front line units of both sides that carried out the majority of war crimes and barbarism

Unfortunately its usually the civilians and front line soldiers who become the victims
