Had to be money and betting on matches like how hyped people get for sports today.
There are countless influencers I would pay to watch murder each other, was probably the same on hand written media back then without the internet. I don’t remember if they had some form of a printing press that was less sophisticated.

Because we still have plenty of monkeybrain in us.
We may be the most intelligent creatures on this planet, but we're still primitive in some regards.
You ever look up how monkeys and apes behave? They're vicious fukkers. We still got plenty of that in us.

It was considered a family event to view public executions at certain phases in history. Parents used to coerce their kids to see criminals get hanged, partly as a fear mongering tactic to deter them from wrongdoing and the entertainment factor, desensitization from suffering, toughen the kids up, and the overall endorsement radical religious fascist like extremism that gets a boner over corporal punishment that reigned supreme at that time etc.,
it's better to suck dink than to be killed
"My outer appearance was poor, but in this way my inner world became richer than anyone else's. Was it not natural that a young boy who suffered from an indelible drawback like mine should have come to think that he was a secretly chosen being? I felt as though somewhere in this world a mission awaited me of which I myself still knew nothing." --Yukio Mishima

It was unenlightened competition/sports for them.
Morals have changed. Who knows, a hundred years from now people will look back at combat sports and think that it was barbaric and cruel in the same way we feel about the Roman idea of sports.

Some of humanity is the greatest evil to ever exist on the planet. I mean witch trials and hanging/ executions were also a spectacle.
Even modern day cartel crime is beyond conventionally evil

Uninformed thread. Not everything you see on TV is true.
The VAST MAJORITY of gladiator shows did not involve the combatants killing each other. Actual gladiators were well paid, and had a sort of celebrity status in Roman society. The goal of gladiators was to fight and entertain, to fight a drawn out battle and wound each other in mostly non-lethal areas. Gladiators respected each other and when one gave up, as long as he put on a good show he would fight another day guaranteed. Gladiators were performers, almost like WWE wrestlers - and occasionally just like in WWE, they will die. It was a risk they all knew and accepted.
Gladiators had to be trained, fed, housed and kept - and all of this came from sponsorship. Owning a gladiator was like managing a boxer except everything came out of your pocket. You did NOT put him in lethal fights, it meant you lose a major investment and income.
Where pop culture fails is depicting gladiators as throwaway humans. They were the exact opposite, it was a profession that MANY people volunteered to do. Only the fabulously wealthy could lose gladiators on a regular basis, and this was not popular with people because it would have kept volunteers in the field away and drained the talent pool.
The gladiators who fought ANIMALS were specially trained and given special weapons. They were specialists similar to hunters today.
The ACTUAL bloody insanity that occurred in the Colosseum/arenas were usually EXECUTIONS of criminals. Yes it is terrible to think about, but when you were a true Roman, you considered all other people from other regions to be subhuman and uncivilized, and especially if they were 'evil' Christians or war criminals from Gaul or past the Rhine, or from the Persian Gulf, you were HAPPY to see them go.
The media shows Rome as a bloodbath because it is based on true events but not based on the correct participants in said events. The truth isn't as exciting so it's obviously sensationalized for modern entertainment.
Naked Statues, Fat Gladiators, and War Elephants is an amazing book by Garrett Ryan that goes into wonderful detail about Roman life - once I started it, I couldn't put it down. Finished it in like 2 days.

Go watch the new docuseries Colosseum and they'll tell you why. Follows before, during, and after the construction and the reasons behind it. Each episode focuses on different aspects of the "games".

I wouldn't be entirely opposed to legalizing amateur organized fighting in ancient Roman style Colosseum brawls. I'd offer every retard I saw $1,000 checks from the gov if they participated. For example, slow people from checkout lines.
