Its taken me a while in life to realise what God wants from us as Im in my late 40s:

God loves the down-and-outers / no-hopers as they are rejected like part of Him was when he was on earth i.e. Jesus.
The current rulers in Jesus time pretty much treated people in a caste like regime - where 90% of people are considered worthless - the great "unwashed".
People who are rejected generally are more honest and real with themselves and others and are likely to be honest and humble with God.

My take on having a relationship with the Creator:

Basically this earth life is just a place to see who could stand being with God for eternity.
He's (not a "He" so to speak but what we refer to God as - for want of a non-gender term) not cruel - as if He was cruel he would make everyone live with Him as boss for eternity which some people arent cut out to do.
So on earth we can choose to give following him / getting to know him a try. If we are cut out for it and accept him for what He is then we most likely will enjoy living with Him on His terms forever.
If not - well I think he will end our existence pretty quickly and we wont exist anymore.
