There are two types of people: people who respond well to authoritative force and are more pliant to coercion, and people who double down and will resist more forcefully under authority. The entire Russian government model hinges on dealing with the former. The American government model hinges on the latter, at least theoretically.

And this is Putin's mistake. Continuing the war will not make Ukraine love Russia any more than beating a wife can make her love you. Perhaps she may be of the compliant type and continue serving. But she may also become emboldened. She may stab you in the back one day.

The Ukrainians are fiercely nationalistic. It's actually amusing to see how obsessed they are with their national pride. But that pride translates to will - the very will Luke speaks about. And that will matters in a war. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it is the single most important aspect of a war. It's the entire reason the war is fought in the first place.

I am not really on Ukraine's side. I think they played this all wrong, and much of this is their own damn fault. I want Russia to win this, at least in the sense of defeating nazism and retaining Black Sea access and securing the safety of the Russian Ukrainians in Donbass and Crimea. But I do not underestimate the Ukrainian will. I hope Putin doesn't either, and I hope he plans for what comes next and seeks to mend the wounds he has inflicted.

I have seen some Russians describe denazification as surgery followed by treatment. Well this war hasn't been particularly surgical, and many innocents have died. And I'm less than optimistic for treatment. If anything, the war has emboldened nazis to recruit more to their cause. It's looking a lot like our war on terror, and it will probably have the same results.

The will of the people to resist coercive authority is very powerful here. It is baked into our government and way of life.
