bbref had 2.7 offense war last year, 4.7 this year.

That's a good question though, will the defense value stick? last year was his only year of 0 dWAR, but he is going to be 29 next year, not old but old to be getting better on defense.

swanson like doubled his defense as he got older. almost doubled his steals.

the offense is not that notable but the improvement on defense and running is

His HR totals jumped in both 2021 and 2022 compared to other years. 2022 may have been slightly better offensively but I don't really think it was by much. Otherwise I don't think he was much different offensively.

He's always been a good baserunner. I think the Braves in general were more likely to steal this past season so those will look higher but I don't think he was really any different previous years. He just didn't get sent as often. Braves coaching has gotten progressively more aggressive sending guys recently (not just steal attempts, but sending them first to third and to the plate as well).

For what it's worth I don't expect him to continue hitting 25 HRs every year. I think he'll slide back to around 18-20. I feel like his defense gets better every year though, so I'm happy with an average to slightly above average bat paired with his defense. He's worth the $22-25 mil per year if that's what he gives.

That said, it's also why I wouldn't want to give him a lengthy contract. So much of his value is tied to his defense and I can't imagine having a 37 year old Swanson as my SS (or Turner or Bogaerts either tbh).

I don’t know why this bothers you so much. Most people are likely to lock in for any important event/project and give more.

It’s not that they don’t care about the other years. They’re not saying “well I have my contract now so I’m going to suck for my team or do less on purpose”

It’s really hard to stay locked in at a high level continuously forever. It’s just not sustainable behavior for anyone in any job.

So yea in the big moments that matter people will kick it into high gear with something meaningful on the line. You see it in the playoffs too, every pitch and every at bat they are grinding hard. Much harder than the regular season. It’s different.

It’s basic human behavior and I guarantee you do it too, so why be mad about it?

i agree. but all it means is they were lazy before

and they'll likely go back to being lazy once they get their money (they're not worth it)

dansby is a prime example of that imo

anyways, braves are gonna have a massive hole to fill that grissom prob won't fill if they don't sign anybody

No it doesn't. You totally missed what I was saying. No one can operate on high gear for an extended amount of time. People will get burnt out extremely fast if that's how you want to ride them.

Even the greats like Jordan would put it into another gear for the important moments/seasons. He wasn't lazy, it's just literally impossible to be so keyed in all the time.

Do you actually think Jordan could have gone out with the flu continuously and played like he did in the Finals against the Jazz? Clearly he had that level of effort in him so why not do it all the time is what you're saying... guy must have just been sandbagging it the rest of his career because he was lazy.... You clearly don't understand what I'm talking about so don't say you agree then turn around and call them lazy.

i do because im building a hospital and my foreman would "ride" my azz on hour 6 of digging in 115 degree heat

and that's for a pittance compared to hundreds of millions of dollars. honestly even major league minimum is too much lol. what is it now like 750k?

first of all, a surgeon doesn't even likely make that much but can a surgeon "be lazy" and not make an incision 100% cause he's not feeling it?

bj upton hit 23 and 28 ding dongs with over 30 sb's the last 2 years before he signed with the braves. and how'd that go?

dansby's profile may be a little biased because he came up a top prospect ( so did upton) but largely before the past 2 years he was considered a bust. now, maybe he took that long to develop. but coincidental he started performing while his pay day came up? idk

edit: if he had like 2 more years of "improvement" i'd prob agree hes just taken this long to develop

Wow... you are so high up on your throne of arrogance I really shouldn't even bother responding but against all better judgment here goes.

First off, no you do not "agree" with me. I'm not calling them lazy. You can't agree with me then turn around and call them lazy in the very next sentence. We literally completely disagree you dumb mother f*cker.

Now that we have that cleared up....

If you were performing at peak capacity every single second that you were working then why did your foreman have to "ride" your ass at hour 6? You must have been dropping back to a more sustainable level of effort for your foreman to jump in and push you to keep it going for a little longer. So thank you for proving my point... time to come down off your throne... looks like you're not as balls to the wall 24/7 as you think if someone is getting on you and riding you to squeeze out that full capacity of effort. Your foreman isn't going to waste his time if he's already getting the most out of you so don't bother coming in and trying to debate against this. All evidence points to you not performing at full capacity for the entire work session if he had to jump in near the end to change that.

Let's continue...

If the president of the United States landed on this surgeons operating table do you think he would be more attentive and conscious in that surgical procedure than a normal routine patient that he see's every day? That's not to say the surgeon isn't putting in effort with the rest of his patients. You seem to be stuck on this concept that it's 100% effort at all times or it's no effort at all and "lazy'.

I already told you we don't agree on that above. The surgeon is not lazy with his other patients just because he's extra meticulous and attentive with the president of the United States on his table. Operating at peak performance (full capacity) is not sustainable long term. You can do it for awhile, but generally not sustainable.

You need to do some research on cognitive capacity/cognitive load. It's not up for debate. People can't operate at 100% capacity forever. The effort they give when it's not 100% capacity doesn't mean it's 0% and lazy either.

Ok... so let's move on to BJ Upton. At no point did I not say there weren't lazy players. Of course there are, and BJ Upton was lazy as f*ck. Yes he turned it on when it was self-serving and turned it right back off and didn't give a single f*ck afterward. Pointing to an isolated incident where someone CLEARLY stopped trying isn't the same thing as someone having a career year during the contract year and then sliding back a bit in production.

Was Starling Marte lazy this year? I mean he went from a 5.5 WAR to only a 3.0 WAR.... must be one lazy mother f*cker. In fact he's been lazy his whole career apparently. Even when he burst on the scene he oscillated between 3 - 4.5..... but never 5.5. What a lazy c*nt for all those years!!! No that's idiot logic.

Seriously just go do some real research like I recommended above. And for all of our sakes, get the f*ck off your throne.

I also want to point out the surgeon isn't competing against someone trying to make him fail. Some tasks become more routine with repetition and don't require as much focus and effort when initially learning.

Do you think he puts as much conscious effort stitching someone up for the 100,000th time as he did when he was first learning to stitch someone up? Probably not. So he's putting less effort right there on a task for an entirely different reason. The difference though, like I said, is he's not competing against someone trying to make him fail. So the stitching is probably still going to be very well done in comparison. But imagine he actually had to dedicate so much conscious effort to stitching every single patient up the same way he did the first one. It would be exhausting to put that much effort into every single task he has to perform.... and quite frankly... unsustainable long-term.

Humans aren't robots bro. Imagine me having to spell this out to a grown adult.

Warning; Probably Bull$hit......

Amateur Yankee writer on Twitter was posting that he's heard that the thing the Yankees might be working on, the "big" thing could be a major trade with the Padres for Tatis Jr. Obviously SD is over him...they've got too many SS's and might be wiling to move on. That contract is ridiculous and I wouldn't want it....I don't like him, but the talent is undeniable. I cant even comprehend what the trade detail could be, probably SD eating some money. Or we could package Donaldson/Hicks/IKF in there somewhere...I dunno.

Sounds too far fetched....just what I read this morning.

He's doing healthy eating and more plyometric chit...he's got the money now to pay for his own personal trainer/chef. Analysts still say he's 6'7" 282 lbs cause thats what baseball reference says, but I bet he's more 270ish the past few years due to his new training regimen/eating habits.

Came in to post this. I disagree with you. The contract isn't that bad compared to the ones being given out to players pushing 30. Would rather have him vs Correa or any other FA. He's only 23 years old. One year older than Oswald Peraza. You probably get 10 years of prime production. He's one of the best hitters in the league. A total game changer.

With that being said I doubt this gets done. Yankees would have to take on all the $$ and include prospects.

Not sure the level of prospects they'd need....not going to trade them Volpe/Peraza. They dont need SS prospects.....Wells maybe could go.

I still doubt it happens.

I haven’t watched him a ton but Contreras is young and can rake. Why would the Braves trade him? Is he as bad defensively as his brother?

So let me get this straight, we gave up a better catcher and Kyle Muller to get an older, worse catcher in return.

You think the Braves would have learned their lesson after the Olson trade but apparently we're going back for another overrated Oakland player for good measure.

The whole premise seems to be around defense but I don't get that one. There's a lot of good defensive catchers who are mediocre hitters. People seem to act like Murphy brings both defense and hitting... in what world is Murphy doing anything to brag about on offense? He's a .235 hitter who maybe knocks out 15 HRs a year with 400 at bats.

Honestly if the Braves wanted defense so bad why didn't they just stick with Pina? Is Pina really that much worse than Murphy? Seriously give Pina the same amount of at bat as Murphy and I bet their lines look pretty similar with comparable defense.

I might be overselling it a little with Pina but the point is strong defensive catchers aren't that hard to find. Good offensive catchers are hard to find. Contreras is going to continue making all-star teams while Murphy turns out mediocre. Nice move Braves.

D'Arnaud is a better catcher than both of them anyway so it makes even less sense from that perspective because at least Contreras was controlled long enough to replace D'Arnaud in 2025. Sean Murphy will be 30 in 2025 and a free agent in 2026.

Rumors swirling the Braves may trade Fried because they don't want/can't extend him..... wtf???

What I really don't get are analyses like this:
Even if the Braves don't attempt to help him better tap into his raw strength, getting away from Oakland's spacious ballpark seems like a move that will empower him to top 20 home runs for the first time in his big-league career.
Wasn't Matt Olson also to get a boost in home runs leaving the spacious Oakland ballpark? What happened there? It's as if no one remembers some highly touted Oakland A went to Atlanta where he was supposed to really take off and he bombed hard as f*ck.

Everyone grading the trade an A for the Braves... lmao what? We now don't have a long term catcher unless we extend Murphy. If we extend Murphy that's more reason for the Braves to say they don't have money for a SS or OF, which we actually need. We have a worse bat at DH with Contreras gone. We lost a potential 5th starter with Kyle Muller. And we severely depleted our farm system (which was already thin) yet again for another Oakland A.

It's literally Groundhog Day and no one seems to notice.

Not gonna lie, this offseason has been beyond stupid.

I know I said the Braves need Swanson and they do but whatever stupid offer he gets I’m glad the Braves didn’t pay it. Gonna be like a 10-year, $250 deal from the Cubs probably.

I still think the Braves missed out on Haniger. He got a reasonable deal and we were too cheap to fill a clear need in the outfield to bring him in
