Why were 1980s television shows so terrible?

Cheesy, hacky trash. I don't know what happened in the 80s, but television really went to **** during that decade, fellas. There were a lot of classic shows in the 70s; many classics in the 90s, but the 80s were just terrible. Horrendous times. What even is the best show from the 80s?? Not talking about shows that started or ended in the 80s, but shows that had most of their run during the 1980s. What's the best? A-Team? Different Strokes??? Night Court? ...None of those hold up very well now. They really don't. So what happened? Where did things go wrong? It's funny because there were plenty of fantastic movies made during that period. Some of my favorite films are from the 1980s. But television.....good lord. Television was a real poopy back then. Poopy like a dry-wiped butt.

I'm talking about shows that has most of their run in the 1980s. Seinfeld, Married with Children, Ninja Turtles, Simpsons, & Saved By the Bell were all 90s shows. Started in the late 80s, but had the lion's share of their run in the 90s. And Knight Rider & Miami vice aged like egg salad. They're terrible shows. They may have been cool back then, but they're corny as hell now. You can't sit and watch an episode of Knight Rider in 2023 and not feel like a total buffoon. They're tacky shows, partner.

Cartoons were at their worst in the 80s, JR. No doubt about that. The Hanna-Barbara overload of the 70s was awful, but the limited animation stuff only got worse in the 80s. Cartoons didn't get good until the early 1990s with Beavis & Butthead, Simpsons & Ren & Stimpy. 1980s had such hits as He-Man & Thundercats.

TV was for old folks staying home and so most everything was very simple.

I recall Taxi having some bizarre and advanced humor and so there were shows like that, but most were cheap stage plays on TV designed old folks and families to watch because there was nothing else to do.

I remember this one channel would play Monty Python and that seemed totally ingenious because it was not people telling jokes but weirdness. I used to also love Dr. Who with Tom Baker because the stories were original and not cliched.

My parents hated anything "smart" and I would have to battle to watch intelligent programming.

TV was like 1930s "vaudeville" where people would say a line, another a wisecrack, then retort.

The Big Bang Theory was the worse recent show that I can think of and was like every CBS sitcom in the 70s. It's the same vaudeville formula, straight line, wisecrack from another, retort from straightman.

Heinous.

Three’s Company aired until 1984. It can be classified as either a 70s or 80s show.

You are right about Roseanne though, so I’ll remove that from my list.

No one was watching Three's Company at the end of it's run. It peaked in the late 70s and the show stayed in the 1970s from an aesthetic standpoint. To be honest, I figured it probably ended in 81 or 82 because it still looked very 70s up until the end. Its far more associated with the 70s than the 80s is my point.

If there were so many amazing 80s shows, there shouldn't be any need to shoehorn in a series so strongly attached to the previous decade.

80s tv shows were the best, still memorable 40 years later, especially the sitcoms.

This is a good post. I agree 100% about the Big Bang Theory. Thought it was the most unfunny show on television. Blew my mind that everyone seemed to love it so much.

The most favorite of mine:

Wish I could go back in time just so I can watch these shows, grow up and then confuse "nostalgia" with "quality." Honestly, I suspect I believe most of these 80s shows to be crap because I watched them long after the 80s were over. By the time I saw them as a teen or adult, I had already developed a decent understanding of quality television; one that wasn't built on a foundation of hacky 80s programming.
