Yes, it definitely is worth it to invest in high quality clothes. Compare a $200 suit to a $1000 suit.

sorry you are actually correct - it can never be viewed as an investment per say

what I meant that a 25 USD sweatshirt that looks like **** in fit and colour after a few washes and lasts 6 months vs a 50-70 USD one that lasts 2-3 years - cost per wear significantly better with the latter

buy a select few amount of clothes, keep them a bit higher quality (Reigning champ) and dont ever need to worry about fit or how they look again.

I used to do the cheap method of buying 5$ tees and $20 sweaters n sweats only for them to be riding in my ass a few months later

Buy conservative styles and fit with quality material and you can't go wrong.

I've had clothes easily last 15 years while still being in fashion and good condition. Stay away from inexpensive blended fabrics and extreme trends.

bro srsly I was banging this girl on her white sheets and clothing lint was falling from my ass crack from cheap tees and underwear

dry them on lowest heat settings = clothes come out slightly damp, but you let them air dry. no damage to fabrics

I think those differences will help out a lot in the long run.
I already do this, cold temperature unless really dirty and hang dry no tumbler

you can assume this is a static variable so it is present for both scenarios

and I have no problems with this because I do not need anything "new" "fashionable this week" - I just need basics that are timeless

I also like minimalist and monochrome

If you want high quality clothing, a good indicator is stitch count and stitch quality, for some you want a thicker fabric, collar and collar support stiffness is key to look your best. Plenty of cheap clothing out there though.

Best to find acceptable quality at some discount stores, outlets or department stores. Never pay full price unless you want to pay 100% more w/retail.

The fit should be prioritized over quality. Everything tailored etc.

I personally don't spend much at all on suits or jackets. Once tailored, most look fantastic, but jmo.

I've picked up a lot of Calvin Klein, Murano, Boss, Tommy H. for $20 per dress shirt / pants. Same with casual clothing. Depends on your size of who has a good fit so you can avoid tailoring costs.

I still have a Versace sports jacket from ages ago - had to get it adjusted over time, but it is still in mint condition decades later.

Think of it like cheap dress socks, vs good socks (e.g., Falke). It's as simple as that, and the folks going "you can get 5 pairs of black socks from chinatown for 99 cents bro lol" are certainly NOT sound of mind when it comes to investment advice.

“High end” is rather broad. You have to look at the stitching, materials, and even the thickness of some of them.

For instance, a pair of selvage jeans by almost any company will last a long time. Don’t need them to be high end. Wrangler has cowboy jeans that are very thick and heavy that last quite a long time that are inexpensive, while they’re “trendy” line rips, and wears out much faster.

As for high end shirts and sweats, they won’t “pill” like low end equivalents will, so in that case they will outlast the low end stuff significantly. The stitching is generally better and won’t pull/fray.

Sometimes it’s just the material. For instance, I have several linen shirts. Two lower end, and two high end. It’s difficult to justify the extra $50-100 on an already expensive shirt ($100) if you are looking for value. however, the high end shirts are clearly better made linen and look nicer. I think the high end linen might last longer, but linen isn’t something you wear to play/work in.

fashions and fit changes so fast best to not spend too much anyway. buy current modern style classic clothing that's decent quality but inexpensive. H&M fits that bill. and keep a minimalist wardrobe. you don't need much. i have very little clothing.

The Metrosexual Guide to Style: A Handbook for the Modern Man
By Michael Flocker
Ten Wardrobe Must-Haves
Your personal wardrobe should always be evolving. The general rule is that you should throw out, or donate to charity, anything you haven’t worn in the last two years. The key is downsizing. Lose the frumpy, sentimental stuff, and change with the times. Keep the T-shirt you love, but lose the reindeer sweater your mother bought you back when you were tragic. In the final analysis, the perfect male wardrobe is infinitely - and thankfully - less complicated than the female wardrobe. Obviously, you need to find what works for you, but here are ten elements that you really shouldn’t be without:
- Three black T-shirts, three new white T-shirts
- Two different pairs of flattering jeans
- One dark suit
- One leather or suede short coat (not a bomber jacket)
- Two rollneck or crewneck cable-knit sweaters
- Two pairs of dark, straight-leg, nonpleated pants
- Three well-cut, solid-color, button-down shirts (one white)
- Quality sunglasses
- One expensive watch, one sports watch
- Flattering underwear
Fashion Don’ts for the Metrosexual Man:
Before you create your new self, you may want to review the following list of unforgivable crimes:
- Varsity jackets
- White shoes
- Colorful vests
- Christmas sweaters
- Bolo ties
- Pleated or cuffed jeans
- Acid-washed anything
- Mesh anything
- Cropped pants
- Boots with shorts
- Gym shorts with shoes
Do’s and Don’ts...
* Pirate shirts, loud patterns, buckles, and zippers are for circus performers and boy bands.
* Pleated pants are history. Slim-fit, straight-leg pants make you look longer and sharper.
* Your clothes should conform to your body. Spend the extra money and have suits tailored.
* Your belt and your shoes should always match, and black on black works best.
* A silver, stainless steel watchband will go with everything. Leather bands should be strong and masculine, and sport watches are for sporting occasions.
* High school or college rings are best kept in the dresser drawer until the reunion is announced.
* A slim billfold or money clip is important, as a bulging wallet will only produce unsightly lumps in all the wrong places.

Most of H&M is chit, but there are a few gems it has every year. I have a canvas coat from there that I got 10 years ago. It looks brand new still and everyone knows me by that coat lol. It will probably last forever and I got it for $25.

Casual stuff I wear often are all based purely on sales and what fits nice. My staples of each type of clothing are high quality. So I have wolverine pocket T's for most days/yard work/work/casual because they last and fit well for like $7-10. I have a few nice t-shirts from cuts and suit supply and some high quality polos.

I think the idea is to have your constantly worn items that are casual to be based on fit. However a few staples in each category should be high quality and reliable. Makes everything simple that way.

Definitely agree on shoes and jackets. I have a high end jacket that’s 25 years old!! They almost never go out of style either, as long as they’re not over the top trendy.

Okay athletic wear I have most of my stuff from Cuts and Bylt only when it is all on sale. I don't ilke their t-shirts that much but their long sleeve shirts and crew neck sweaters are nice. I have the Cuts fleece as well I got for $80 on sale. All the stuff not on sale is a bit too expensive for what you get.

High quality and higher end polos/t-shirts/long sleeve/sweaters I get almost exclusively from Suit Supply. They are expensive, there are no deals ever, but their knitwear is high quality and makes me look way better from the fit. Softest clothing ever too. Get tons of compliments on it.

Lululemon has great chino type pants. Those are my go to.

The best underwear is definitely "MeUndies." It's the only underwear I wear.

I'm still looking for solid plain t-shirts. Most just don't hold up for me.

In for more ideas/brands from people. Otherwise I just pick up something here and there when I find something in person at the store if it is good quality.

pants and boots are where I spend since these two need to be broken in. I don't want to break in a pair of jeans to have them tear out as soon as they get to their peak comfort levels

Some good purchases I've made

$200 Anderson's belt worn almost daily for 8 years, mogs every other belt looks and class wise

220 euro cashmere sweater, worn at least a few hundred times over 6 years or so and looks new, 50 cents per wear

$350 Hogan sneakers marked down from 500 worn for literally years and actually resoled, mogging basic shoes everywhere and look great.

$80 Italian label t shirt handwashed about 100 times, worn 250+ times and JUST got a small hole 30 cents per wear

Compare to a belt I bought from Macy's years ago for $40, wore about 10 times before the buckle snapped off, $4 per wear

$50 banana republic merino sweater that lasted one cold wash and went to trash, about $10 per wear

$20-40 department store t shirt that lose their shape or full of holes after a few washes ~$2 per wear.

So yes it can absolutely pay off spending more on clothes especially if you're buying stuff that looks good with a bit of wear. This won't work if you're buying shiny Hugo boss type chit, thankfully that style is mostly out now.

Jeans are a bitch because you can spend $500 on jeans and have the crotch go in 6 months.

This is what Poors never understand, and why they stay poor.

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

When you idiots shop at "fast fashion" places, or buy electronics from WalMart you are getting lower quality goods, it's not rocket science, but for some reason the Poors love to cope and say it's the same.

The best is when the 'tards who shop at outlet malls THINK they are getting the same QUALITY from XYZ brand. No idiots, designer brands SPECIFICALLY make different items for their OUTLETS.

I buy literally all my clothes from Nordstrom or Bloomingdales, it lasts as long as I want to wear it...I have designer jeans that are 8-10 years old, they are fine. The only thing that doesn't last is shoes.....but even then it depends what you're buying. If you are buying $500+ leather dress shoes / boots / chukka's they WILL last, you just have to re-sole them now and again and take care of the leather, sneakers don't last, but you really shouldn't be wearing sneakers if you are a man.

Blazers / Sports coats should set you back $400-800 each. Then you get them tailored which can cost you another $80-100 depending on what you get done.

Poor people are hilarious. They end up spending way more, getting in credit card debt, paying interest, to buy cheap junk lol.

Depends, it could unlock opportunities in life that are priceless. Plus, something like a Rick Owens leather jacket could cost 5000 up front but would actually retain most of its value at resale.

"Depends, it could unlock opportunities in life that are priceless" can you elaborate? I can understand how some things bring social status but I am more of a guy who just wants a minimalist wardrobe with quality pieces that last a few years

admittedly I wouldn't want to spend 5k on a jacket

If you’re jacked like me you either walk around with a tank top with Nike shorts or shirtless. Nah

I buy a lot of Tommy Hilfiger, the quality on some of their clothes really aren’t that good for the price you pay. Levi’s jeans although expensive are good quality so I’d recommend Levi’s. A lot of asos branded clothes I buy are pretty good quality too.

I know you live in the UK so I’d recommend next as well if you’re in the market for jeans, their jeans are very good quality for the price.

Another great brand in terms of quality and how many washes it can take etc is Lacoste. I’ve Had a Lacoste bomber jacket for like 4 years and it’s the same as it was the first day I bought it, where as standard bomber jackets maybe last a year.

Also I only buy stance socks and my boxers are onthatass, Yano the subscription based ones, they’re really good quality.

All of that being said, it really is brand/item dependent.
