What 'defensiveness'? The thread is about loans to friends, and the biggest losers on this forum (FA (ropecel); northern (ropecel)) showed up like moths to a flame to cry 'fraud!'.

All your (plural) posts are doing is showing how deeply insecure you all are, srs. That you don't see that really shows your collective socioeconomic brackets.

My posts are designed to help little brehs addicted to whores. But I can understand how accepting that reality must hurt.

Hope you don't rope, like the rest of the ropecels on this forum who can't stand seeing a representation of the good life.

Numbers aren't a representation of the good life, this is your own insecurity coming through. Go venture into the watch thread or car subforum to see the people who are actually worthy of some envy.

I mentioned that I am happily married, and spoke to my wife about this before deciding. It's your insecurity (English isn't your first language, is it?) which shines through here, because you're reading what you want/need to read.

Further, that you think anything is "worthy of some envy" shows how low IQ/EQ you are. With each post of yours ITT you humiliate and debase yourself further against me. Are you enjoying this? Being outed as a losercel? Yikes.

Lol, one thanks, Two I was fuking around with the #s.

But, yeah, if I lent money to friends/family, my expectation is that if they do not approach me honorably to return it, then it's gone. As for friends, I've had many over the years, I generally surrounded myself with fewer people, but ones I felt like I could trust more... and even then, there have been at least a couple foxes that snuck into that henhouse.

I don't want to say it's peoples "true nature" or anything, but I do think that when you apply stress to someone, and this goes for us all, but we all crack in our own unique ways and reveal parts of our nature that were otherwise hidden in the good times.

With friends, most of all my time with friends from the past and current -- it's always good times. Having fun, making jokes, knocking back a couple drinks, etc, these people are around me because it's *fun* to be with them. Good times. Good times which might not show their true character, that's something that only a time of stress is going to show and it's only in those moments you find out for sure who your friends truly are.

Now, if this guy is someone who has had your back, who you've forged your friendship through fire and you've been in the chit with him and come out it as brothers? Yeah, ****, lend him $12k. He'll probably pay you or approach you and figure a way to make it work somehow.

... but is this guy a friend like that?

If he is... why'd you even make this thread?

Hey friend, you think I can borrow $10k for some random thing? It's a totally good idea.

For the discussion. I thought about it enough to ask my wife what she thought as well, and figured "Hey, why not make a forum thread that's a bit different from whoremaxxing/tiktok/ropecel nonsense".

It's also interesting to see folks' thoughts on friendship. I have a lot of acquaintances, but I'm very conservative when it comes to 'friends'. At the age of 42, I have less than 10 'friends', and I'm fine with that.

He is one of them. But even then, look at this thread - a lot of folks apply that "don't chit where you eat" idea rather liberally in their lives. Maybe one part of me is a bit surprised that I had a second thought about it, too.

In all I just think it's interesting to consider the relationship between oneself and "friends", and an example of small loans with them as well. Glad I'm not the only one

Even if I post up the [SRS] tag, loser/ropecels on this forum start crying. It comes with the territory - negging losers, putting them on the spot for 'whoremaxxing', putting them on the spot for being mental midgets etc.

It's serious work, but someone has to be responsible for cleaning up the soycel crew here srs.

If your friends are well to do why don't they have 12k?

why can't they get a loan from their family?

why can't they get a loan from the bank?

why can't they pull it from their 401k?

why can't they just wait until August to make the repairs when they have the money?

I would never even think to ask to "borrow" 12k from anybody i know.

... really? My wife vaguely knows I post online and considers it all time I spend trolling, ie. time wasted that I could otherwise be spending to talk about her day, help around the house or do other familial pseudo-obligations.

Anyway, at your age it's likely dawning on you that you will not be making new friends like the old ones. Which is probably the only reason this money might be a problem. Money is valued differently by every person. For you, it does not appear to be a big deal but for others, I'm sure assassinations have been plotted and paid less than what you lent your friend.

Likewise, you may value your friendship with this man dearly, he might have priced out his friendship with you right at $12,000... and I hope that isn't the case, but it's going to be very painful for you (or anyone) to be confronted by that kind of ugly truth.

To me, this is why I wouldn't do it or if I did do it I wouldn't expect it back. I wouldn't loan any money I couldn't personally afford not to get back and I wouldn't lose a friendship over some sum of money that was an amount less than what I could afford.

I can always make more money -- I won't be making any more real friends.

No....

I asked my wife about the loan, while we were speaking this morning. You asked in your post why I made the thread, and the second part was an answer to that.

On your point about money, yes, but you need to understand that for some folks X and Y aren't a big deal, so when P and Q cry that X and Y aren't possible (you said yourself that a millionaire in NYC isn't a big deal) they show an ugly side of their character, one that is rather cope-filled.

I have a very high threshold for friends - some folks here describe it as someone who they 'might' know outside of work. I have 0 friends at work, only acquaintances. Friends is something far, far greater for me. And yes, I did not loan an amount of money I cannot afford to lose. But let's loop back to the beginning: what sort of friend actually asks for a loan, and doesn't pay it back? I couldn't imagine that any friend (see above) of mine would behave that way.

Well, keep up updated.

And, yeah, a couple million doesn't amount to what it used to. I hate to disclose too much personal information, but I have a few assets. Some working for me. I also know, while 12 grand might not measure much against my overall net worth, I don't normally have that liquid, not consistently at least (and pretty much never by the end of any given month). Meanwhile, I don't live particularly lavishly, but in Texas we just had a weird freeze and tons of rain. Turns out I'll be needing some French drains in the backyard. Also, the pool filter just cracked, probably because of that freeze. Oh hey, there's my beautiful little girl about to turn 16, guess she'll be needing some wheels, what's that I hear about some 'elective surgery' for someone special in my life. Hmm, how are those college funds looking? And on and on and on...

... this is just me, but whatever I have or don't have, I will say -- I not only do not have $12,000 to potentially piss away, I wouldn't piss away $1,200 or maybe even $120, either.... and it's not that I couldn't come up with it, but I just have to look at things in perspective and where my real obligations are in my life.

You areyou, though -- and good on you for talking over this with your wife, she's your partner in life. Help your buddy if you can and odds are good that he will turn up to repay you when the time comes... just don't count on it, all I'm saying.

OP, had your friend already had work done to his house? Typically, an insurance assessor comes to view damage or gets a reputable company to quote the damage. It is then either billed directly to insurance, minus deductible, or check sent to property owner to pay out. Work should never start until insurance agrees on the the amount.

Will do.

On priorities: I can feel mine changing, as my wife is due with our first on July 6th. I'm already thinking about private education (budgeting), and even before that: where we will live. In about 1.5 years I plan to leave NYC for good, if things go right for my investments and career move. But the after? One of my favorite Miscers is from Texas and when he came with his wife to NYC it was so nice to talk to them about everything under the sun, including his and hers armories. My wife wants to move somewhere cold - honestly I could see her in Dublin and loving the grey/cool weather every day, but I'm a sun type.

Which means probably having residences in both, hence my property investment path. Somehow, the child isn't here but I find myself pushing so much more for safety/security now than I ever did. Just seeing my wife (5'10, 90s model figure) grow that big belly, feeling little movements inside....it's changing breh. And part of me wants to get a big ranch somewhere conservative where neighbors trust each other, are heavily engaged in a parent teacher association society, neighborhood watch etc. But values like these are hard to come by, looping back to the friends discussion.

I'm lucky that I'm reasonably well off, happily married, have a little one on the way (we're not checking the gender, and we're doing a home birth with a midwife). And the few friends I do have I do cherish, and can only wish that for other people too.

How much did you change when you had your baby girl?

Me too. Something about "I've abandoned my child" really struck me, and the way he spoke with the guys making fun of his son in the restaurant as well.

In all honesty he's one of my favorite actors, but I guess that's easy to say.

Known him for around 13 years, and his family too. I have one friend remaining from HS - he's the 't1 employer' guy I refer to in some of my posts.

His house was partly renovated. The fire crept up the guest bathroom (ground floor) up to the guest bedroom (second floor) and damaged the roof, estimated damage was around 240k? But the issue is that in the insurance report, his wife admitted to having put some 'ashes' she swept from their fireplace in the trash outside, and the insurance company are insisting that it was this move that started a fire, not the spark from the heat pump outside (which was my friend's claim).

So there's something now about partial payouts, and additional dispute processes, and he wants to proceed asap with the repairs anyway because he's staying with his wife at his grandma's place. I've never had a house fire but apparently it reeks, and you can't be in the place at all for a while.

Then it would be a complete denial. They wouldn't partially pay out for something deemed their fault. Your friend should sue the insurance company. They'll, likely settle, but it would still get paid. He also should not start any work until he and his insurance come to an agreement

I'm not an expert here, but something like: (i) he gets X paid to a cap; (ii) that cap should be a lot higher, as he has paid for a no fault clause (according to the broker he purchased the plan from and its upgrades) but the broker never affected the no fault clause, which would have covered the entirety of the damage.

So he's somewhere between none, and full, but he wants more. In the interim he's doing things like closing the roof (water damage etc.), the upper floor walls/bathroom, cleaning, re-painting the internal plaster. But some window damage and the frames there were pretty expensive, hence the request for funds too.
