How did we go from this... to this?

Migrant farm worker with his wife and ten children, originally from Oklahoma where he had been a tenant farmer, and moved to California in 1936.

German immigrant family with seven sons and a daughter arriving at Ellis Island.

How the **** did we go from this to this?

it's mad that they'll go out of their way to actively promote it too
like a decision has been made to put it all over mainstream media

i was in the cinema awhile ago and there was an advert, something like cadburys, and it flicks to 2 guy kissing. my kneejerk reaction was belt out "OHH" and i did it loud as **** in a quiet cinema and people were turning around and ****

i don't particularly want to see a dude make out with a girl really and 2 guys is just too much, it was just a gut response

“Posing” or what to do when in front of a camera as a concept I doubt was a concern to the people in the first photos

That's because of technological evolution, has nothing to do with socio cultural degeneracy.

You think someone has to be putting on a fake smile in a selfie or internet picture to be considered happy.

Normal people wearing normal clothes working on a farm is just simply insane according to you.

While a "breastfeeding man" is perfectly sane and normal, really makes you think.

Here's a smiling sharecropper from the Southern Tenant Farmers Union (STFU).

It took up to 15 minutes to take a picture back then so everyone had to just stand there not knowing when the process would happen. That’s why old photos everyone looks miserable.

nah bro you're missing my point

i know the 2nd **** is wrong, quite obvious. but there's no way in their demeanour, body language, smile that those guys in the first set are happy.

the dude at the desk looks alright but still he looks like he's barely clinging on. who the **** wants to do that office **** day in, day out most of the week. yeah the first lot had it harder and needed to plough fields etc but it's still not ideal.

this looks like the face of a truly happy person, you can see it in their eyes

Farmers had many children because they needed help on the farm. Kids are good labor. There also wasn't birth control. So if you wanted sex a lot, odds were you would have a lot of kids.

If they are good parents, I have zero problem with same sex couples, especially if they adopt kids who need good homes. The guy trying to breastfeed his kid is just a whackjob though.

Society changes. Water is wet.

Some people did smile in these old dageurrotypes and it really stands out, as you have to hold the pose

Being a sharecropper/migrant farmer in the 1930s really sucked balls.

But you still had love, family, friends, culture, good food, music, games, sports, nature, you still had a reason to smile.

You cannot tell whether someone is truly happy by appearances.

You can put on an act, you can even be very convincing like in the movies.

But it is impossible to truly tell the deepest matters of another man's soul just by looking.

Check out those other old photos I just posted above, they "look" happy but are they truly happy?

To think that everything is looks and appearances is very shallow-minded and vain. There is much more to life.

I agree that the man in your pic looks happy, but there are people with pics like this that take their own life.

To think that some migrant farmers from the Great Depression look insane for just taking a normal photo.

To me, that is disingenuous and irrational, so much of this emotional logic in online discussions.

People on old photos didn't smile because the photographer said they couldn't smile, the slightest of movement could make a picture blurry.

A better representation are old videos.

It's called being Southern bro.

People still live like this in trailers.

Be a freedman or a redneck sharecropper:

1. Wake up at the ass crack of dawn
2. Bust your ass 12+ hours in the cotton fields for wealthy landlord
3. Bring your haul to the scales, cotton merchants tip the scales
4. Stay in generational poverty for years upon years

And here we are today, we are called rednecks.

Funny how the people who controlled debt, finance, business, and real estate kept Southerners in permanent generational poverty for profit.

Funny how so many slave merchants, cotton merchants, slave wealth landlords and planters, and wealthy businessmen just didn't care for Christianity.

i think you can , seriously. it's the eyes that are a give away. when you smile so you get those 'smile lines', that's a sign of happiness.

a girls mum from around here said her true beauty aging thing is she doesn't smile lul, she's like 59 and looks 40

Back then, people thought it was more dignified to look stoic in pictures. That's why no one ever smiled in them.

Plus with modern dentistry not being a thing, probably better to hide those teeth.

No doubt that life was hard back then, but I'll bet if you did a fair comparison of happiness score, theirs would be higher. They didn't need antidepressants, constant dopamine fixes, and external gratification.

Plus, that dudes wife never slept with anyone else.
