You know.. it would've saved his life if public school actually taught anything useful, you know like don't jump into the ocean on a booze cruise, how currents work, that sharks follow ships etc etc

Even if none of that were true, it's surprisingly hard to stay afloat in the middle of the ocean for very long without anything to hang on to or keep you afloat. People seem to think it's just like swimming on top of a pool or lake, but it's not.

If you're just talking from a scientific perspective of saltwater vs. fresh, then sure. But the middle of the ocean has waves too, some of which are plenty big. You'll have to work much harder from getting dunked under stranded in the middle of the ocean than a lake or a pool. I'm not even talking about currents pulling you one direction or another, just the activity of the waves themselves requires much more exertion to keep your head above them.

Exactly this, you could do nothing but breath and still stay afloat in the ocean (see many folks be on their back chilin floating at the beach). Though people flail and tire themselves out and drown.

Negative ghost rider, hes in the Atlantic. They have rolling raves, with long periods. They don't have 2-4 second periods like we do in the gulf where the waves appear choppy and consistent. If the guy knew how to float on his back he could chill for days providing the sharks didn't get him.
