3) No one cares whether you agree or understand. Some doctors have tried because they have kind hearts, but it was a mistake to engage with the public beyond the basic ressurances. Getting into a detailed discussion or a debate with a lay person is a total waste of time and energy.

What is your area? This is, indeed, how it works. People publish their work and debate it at conferences, in presentations, and in publications. It is not resolved by public debate. For example, in the court of public opinion, string theory is bunk. In academia, among respected physicists, it is still taken very seriously as the best candidate for a unified theory. Lee Smolin going to the public and media did not change scientific opinion. Leonard Susskind attempted a public debate with him only to find it a total waste of effort. At the end of the day, the public is lay and cannot add any value to helping discern what is true or the best approximation of truth.

Publications are a form of written debate, you pleb. Again, over time, as more evidence accumulates supporting a given theory and ruling out competing ones, the credentialed and principled experts in the field change their views and adopt the new theory. There are always a few holdouts who eventually give in or become cranks and eventually get chucked out of the field.

The public is always the last to adopt or integrate anything. It can take them centuries to adopt scientific theories. Trying to convince idiots is a waste of time.
